Mariah Carey's newest a lightweight

Those close to Mariah Carey who professed surprise at her recent breakdown obviously hadn't listened to "Twister", one of the few tracks on "Glitter" in which she doesn't chirp or wail about love. The song's about a girl who apparently commits suicide. "I'm feeling kind of fragile/ And I've got a lot to handle/ But I guess this is my way/ Of saying goodbye," the young-beyond-her-years pop star sings over a surprisingly light-handed musical backdrop. Hello, 911?

On half the tracks from this album for her star vehicle "Glitter", due in theaters Friday, Carey is felt mostly in her absence, in the way she lets guests like Ja Rule, Busta Rhymes, Da Brat, and Mystikal take over while she busies herself in the background, never quite connecting with her collaborators, as if she weren't quite with it. On the rest, the ballads, she doesn't sing too much, replacing digging for meaning with expulsion of air. Then again, Carey has always been a shiny vessel, not the drink - glitter, not gold.
