"It's Like That": song of the week
Mariah Carey's comback single "It's Like That" (Island/Def Jam) is stunning for its sheer lack of Mariah-ness. No high-end screams. No overwrought high notes. Just laid-back cool. Producer Jermaine Dupri provides her with a hot beat and irresistible, spacey-synth groove, and she plays it straight, oohing and cooing like any number of R&B-hook girls.
Is it Janet, Ashanti, Ciara? At this point, it doesn't matter. Mariah is just looking to fit in again, trying to convice folks that she's not a screw-loose diva with a roomful of shoes, but another around-the-way Long Island girl trying to take care of business, y'all. So far, so good. (NY Newsday)
