IYF vs NII (112,749)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Which one would everyone like to see properly promoted, performance, music video? If there is only budget for one? By the way, there was never a Bruno Mars duet in the works and definitely not now that her and Anderson are not together. And with the prospect of NII being promoted next, there may not be any more plans for IYF.

Yes, I meant the United States, which is Mariah's main market and the focus of the Billboard charts. I understand that the world is bigger than the US.

"Butterfly", "The Roof", and "Breakdown" were commercial releases, but not in the USA. Maybe that's why there are remixes. Some people forget that the world is bigger that just the USA.

I think "Butterfly" had a chance to be more successful if it had been commercially released. With airplay only, it managed to reach #15 on the Hot 100 Airplay Chart, #11 on Adult Contemporary, and #35 on Adult Pop Airplay. "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" also had a lot of gross-genre appeal. I think "Butterfly" didn't get a commercial release because of the subject matter (her separation/divorce from Tommy).
The "Butterfly" album was really a missed opportunity in terms of singles. Almost an entire year elapsed between the commercial release of "Honey" and the commercial release of "My All". The approach made absolutely zero sense considering how popular Mariah was at that point in her career. It was also strange that Sony chose to put out two editions of "My All" on CD Single - one with the So So Def Mixes and Dance Remixes of "My All" and the other with remixes of "Breakdown", "The Roof", and "Fly Away". "Butterfly", "The Roof", and "Breakdown" were all clearly planned for commercial release but then vetoed/pulled for some reason. Otherwise, she would not have produced remixes and music videos.
"Butterfly", "The Roof", and "Breakdown" all should have received full commercial releases. They're among her best work and would have helped the "Butterfly" album perform better than it did.

If "Butterfly" had been commercially released back then, do you think it would have been a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100? Although I have loved "Lead The Way" more than this song lately, it has been my top favorite ballad by Mariah. I didn't know they changed the rule at that time, and I was expecting that after "Honey", she would score another No. 1 with "Butterfly". And then, I was also expecting "Breakdown" only to find out they were released for airplay only. I remember I was so sad and only recovered when "My All" hit the top spot. Just reminiscing, and a thought triggered by this post.

Alexis dahling this particular lamb has been shadowing Blake during some strategic Denver Carrington board meetings. Lol. We all are just elated how MC keeps breaking all these records in her late 50s. What other legacy female artist is doing that? He has always been our chart information lamb.

The Butterfly single had a lacklustre reception in the territories where it was released, so I don't think it would have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It's a beautiful song, but it's better as the album's theme. Breakdown on the other hand was absolutely robbed of its chance. I'm not sure it would have topped the charts but it certainly should have been given the chance to shoot its shot, and expose more people to it. Songs like Breakdown and The Roof were the backbone of that album.

Both good songs that remind me so much of MOAIA but if I had to pick the one that would likely be a hit it's definitely "In your feelings". [Here For it All] is a very good album that deserved better so I'm really hoping the next will be more successful. I feel a Bruno Mars duet would help a lot.

Billboard Hot 100 (December 27, 2025)
#1 AIWFCIY - (21 weeks total at #1) #2 Jingle Bell Rock #3 Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree #4 Last Christmas #5 Santa Tell Me
AIWFCIY is now the longest-charting Hot 100 hit by a woman in a lead role (78 weeks). Mariah also becomes the artist with the most cumulative weeks at #1 in Hot 100 history, 100 weeks total, with the closest competitor still 40 weeks behind. Decades later and still making history. The queen stays the queen?

I wonder how it never occurred to Mariah Carey to recreate this scene from her favorite movie Mean gGrls like Delta just did here. It would've been nice of her specially she's not into choreography and that scene needed a clumsy dancer, and the outfit is kinda similar to her super festive AIWFC version, but at least here more appropriate?

Correction (112,735)
by jaker20 from US
| |

I don't see that happening, because that would be genre discrimination and would make the chart very corrupt. Christmas music is merely a genre, that would be like excluding rap or dance or disco or any other genre during those times when they were popular.
And right now, holidays is the most impactful chart season. The points are the highest of the year during this season, and listening to music is more autonomous.
This is why AIWFCIY's achievements is simply mind-blowing. It's the most organic and it's the most consumer, populist driven era, where all walks of life are represented on the charts.

Correction (112,719)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
I don't think they will, and if they did, it would be unfair. Holiday songs aren't taking up those spots by accident or because of some loophole, they're there on merit. They're the most popular songs in the country during that time, measured by the exact same rules as everything else: radio airplay, streaming, and sales.
If a song is dominating all three metrics, it deserves its position, whether it's a brand new release or a 30-year-old Christmas classic. Changing the rules just because seasonal songs are too successful would basically mean punishing records for being massively in demand. That's not how a chart that's supposed to reflect popularity should work.

Beginning October 1997 until January 1998, the number one song was Elton John's Candle In The Wind. The song was a tribute to Lady Diana's passing. That song was everywhere. So I had a feeling that maybe Sony didn't release Butterfly as a single because they knew Butterfly would only reach No 2 and imagine what the media headlines would be, and somehow this eventually would damage the reputation of the album.

Come on Mariah and Gamma, take advantage of that and release Nothing Is Impossible. That song is perfect for that. Relase a high budget music video. Perform that song everywhere on tv like 2005 with We Belong Together. Bring back the glory of a 90's ballad like Vision of Love, My All with that song. Bye.
