Your last point made me laugh. It is so sad if that is the real problem with her creativity. It is time to claim those insurance money.

She's definitely still one hell of a writer though. With You proves that. And if you took away some of the production and the state of her voice, Cry, HFIA, and NII were pretty stellar work.
But fair, meds absolutely affect your creative process. She still has her writing chops, but because of this seemingly declining health she's got going on, it just takes longer.
Another thing I noticed is that Mariah has always said she likes to go on walks for ideas to come and marinate. It's also a way for creatives to work through a mental block. She can't even walk now.

Her voice is seriously damaged from all these years, which is somehow expected. And her writing skills are nowhere where they're used to be, and that is probably from her medication literally blocking her brain. Most bipolar artists get creative during (hypo)mania episodes and the medication work on blocking those (among with the depressive ones). Mariah knows it but can't do anything about it, I guess that explains the lack of energy we see. Don't expect anything more from her, at this point I don't know if she's still enjoying making music with all her limitations.

MC 2017? (113,970)
by TJ from Norway

I think she has stagnated as a musician a long time ago. She makes what she thinks is safe, and then it fails. This old school RnB is just boring (in my opinion). Her voice has become metallic and sounds more like the chipmunks characters. It's difficult to hear what she is singing, because of the voice and the mumbling throughout some songs. I also think that her lyrics used to be more mature back in the days. It's to much swearing and brand naming in her latest work. The melodies are almost gone compared to how she sang and produced in her early days. I'm tired of the "I don't know her" attitude, and I think she has lost that fight against J.Lo (who acts much more mature, polite and classy about the whole thing). Mariah comes out as simple and bitter, acting like a spoiled child. Her interviews are not interesting because there has been absolutely nothing new for the last 10-15 years. It's like she's on repeat. She doesn't get the respect she wants and there's reasons for that. She just doesn't realise it.
I believe that most people outside this board think she is an outdated diva with crazy demands and no connection with the real world (or that she stopped making music in 2005). Most of my friends can't stand her, and when I mention her name to people they are either "who is that?" or "she is horrible". Guess who is fighting for her in those discussions. That's me.

You don't have to love everything Mariah does to be a fan. But saying it's "so many things" without actually explaining what those things are doesn't really say much. If your feelings have changed, that's valid. I'm just curious what specifically changed for you.

I can't even begin to imagine how she must feel having to lip sync everything, and spend literal years in a studio to make an album that vocally wasn't good at all, when 30 years ago she could sing effortlessly, and brought the house down with her performances.
The reality is her voice is completely damaged beyond repair. At this point, it doesn't even matter if the reason is alcohol, medication, improper care, nodules, over singing etc. Her gift has gone and whether that was down to her arrogantly squandering it, or for reasons beyond her control I don't think we will ever know.
But keeping up this charade must psychologically take its toll. That is why I have always said it would be better that she admits defeat, gracefully bows out, and spends her remaining years writing. Imagine her writing an entire album for Ariana? It would be Ariana's dream, and MC could live vicariously through someone that can sing as well as she once could.

Respectfully agreed. As much as I'd love to hear new music from Mariah, I'm pretty satisfied if HFIA was her last original studio album, she really gave her all with what she's still got. And the song HFIA itself sounds like a perfect closure from her to us fans, musically and lyrically. Of course she can still release new compilations, live albums, anniversary editions, soundtracks, concept albums (jazz, grunge, Christmas, covers, whatever), but if there's not gonna be an MC17, I see no harm.

Lara, you make some valid points in your post. I miss hearing MC use those higher order vocabulary words in her lyrics. It must hurt MC that her studio sessions are not what they used to be. I guess that is why she stopped posting photos on X and Instagram. She was improving vocally until she had to let the world know about her bipolar diagnosis. Disclosing her diagnosis did something to MC emotionally and physically.

Mariah Carey doesn't show up for longtime collaborator (113,965)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |

I agree with the thrust of this. Mariah is definitely to be commended for co-writing and co-producing her own material, but her work writing and producing for other artists is pretty marginal. But then again there are not many successful recording artists who also have major success composing material for others. It makes sense because you wouldn't want to give away great self-penned material to others if you can keep it for yourself. Bruce Springsteen gave "Because the Night" to Patti Smith and Stevie Wonder gave "Tell Me Something Good" to Rufus and Chaka Khan, but those songs are exceptions rather than rules. No song in Mariah's catalog exemplifies this more than "Hero". Tommy was right to insist she keep it rather than giving it to Gloria Estefan.

It's crazy that Mariah was first recognized by Songwriter Hall of Fame first, when she's not even writing anything anymore. Her latest album took maybe 10 years to write, and I love the album and all, but that does really warrant a Hall of Fame award?
Mariah is a great writer, written so many great songs, and from the very beginning of her career she wanted to be known for that, not just her voice, because that's what really separates her from the great divas. And she never stopped talking about how she writes constantly and it's a passion of hers and all.
But she's not even writing anymore. She's not written a great song for other artists, which is really the mark of a great writer, someone who can write for others. This is the part of her career that is so lacking.
Mariah, if you want to be known for being a great writer, then write.

I knew before even reading the article that it would be another veiled hit piece by Roger Friedman. Considering they haven't even been associates for years, much less friends. I don't see why she needed to be there. Every Christmas, before he sold his rights, he would always bash MC about her concept and writing of the song with him. Like clockwork, he would come out and talk shady. The same way Mr. Friedman is here suggesting she hasn't had anything to do with the writing process, which is ridiculous. There are times that I feel people expect her to show respect at all times to everyone yet that same fervor isn't extended when she should be respected for her talent and abilities on a core level.

These are great songs MC has written for other artists.

She didn't have enough humidifiers and didn't sleep for 23 hours the night before to prepare her voice. That's why she pre-recorded the vocals. She was on vocal rest so that her voice would be rested for more pre-recording sessions for The Celebration of Mimi and Christmas shows. She needs a least 72 hours of sleep before she can pre-record vocals.

My humble opinion. It is obvious that the Summerball was lipped. All Christmas concerts are lipped lately. Except a few snippets are live or prerecorded. There are many vocal coaches who analyse MC's voice of the 90s and also the actual voice. [They] explain the situation respectfully and realistically on YouTube. It does not mean that MC does not have a voice anymore. But it is obvious to see that the voice is not the same anymore. And it does not have to be either. Her vocal chords are strained. If you have injured your knee playing soccer for many years that can happen unfortunately. Mariah is experiencing the same somehow. We are not bashing her. I think she still can release albums in the future. And sing in her healthy and lower vocal range. Like in her last album [Here for it all]. And make the best with that what is still possible. In the studio she can make her pauses when she needs to. On a tour you have to function very well. And the mental pressure raises. With that pressure she gets anxious and insecure and looks stiff. Also it has a large impact on her stage presence because she has to control many things at the same time. I guess also Gamma does not support her well and let her down. In this business no one cares what you're going through. Unfortunately.

I would strongly disagree. I've been a Mariah fan since 1990, so I've followed her live performances for decades. Trust me, I know the difference between when she's singing live, when she's using backing tracks, and when she's fully lip-syncing. Not every performance is 100% live, but it's also not as simple as saying "95% lipped".

The concept of her voice is still so mind-boggling to me. Feather-light on the soft tones, delicately sweet, with subtle built-in rasps that make it impossible to duplicate. Then she belts with such a force of resonance, yet the opulence stays intact. She is unbelievably ethereal in every register, it really doesn't make sense.
When you listen to the a cappella versions of Forever, OSD, My All, and Outside, you would actually be a fool not to admit she has the absolute greatest singing voice, nobody honestly comes close. Patti LaBelle was correct in her assessment when she said Mariah has the most phenomenal voice.
Your talent is essentially borrowed, and Mariah can confidently face the Creator one day and say, "Lord, I did the best with what You gave me." She did the most while she had it in pristine condition. For that, I'll always be eternally grateful.

Yes, I used her Music Box album filler song to describe the current status of our queen's glamorous life. Come on, lambs. You cannot expect her to be the '90s Mariah. She's way past that. It's already written in history. Her glittery music career is taking its natural course. The peaks and valleys, and another set of peaks and valleys, had happened already. I am not saying she may not peak again. She may, but also may not, depending on her choices and the public's. However, let's face the hard reality that she's slowly fading away, at least the music she's putting out there recently. Everything fades like Aretha, Whitney, Janet, Madonna, and even Celine, Britney, and Christina A. They are no longer the singers they used to be, and neither is Mariah Carey. We can only hope for and pray for another peak, but we can also choose to be truthful, be happy, and content with the contribution she already made in the industry, the history she has written, and enjoy the songs and albums she worked really hard to put out there for us to enjoy forever.
Mariah can still do what she does to stay relevant. She was born to do it. However, we may put our expectations realistically. Her voice can never be the same. She's effing 57 years old and not 27, may I remind everyone? And singers can still sing in their old age, but not the way they sounded when they were young. Our speaking voice naturally loses its strength, much like the singing voice. It's a hard truth that we all need to accept instead of being disillusioned about her voice and singing career. Whether we like it or not, her light gradually dims, and she can only extend this before it completely fades, depending on the choices she makes in life. Everything eventually fades away.

You've been a fan since 1990, yet one album erased 35 years of support? Sounds less like loyalty and more like nostalgia with a volume knob. If the "true Mariah" only exists in the past, maybe you're a fan of your memories rather than the artist herself.

Mariah didn't lose her voice, she lost the expectation that she should sound exactly like she did at 20. The Summertime Ball performance proved she can still sing and entertain at an elite level. Critics often focus on old viral clips or isolated moments. The Summertime Ball showed she can still sing many of her classic songs and connect with the audience.

Yes, sadly everything fades away, but she's not in the age of Cher or Mick Jagger. Lol. And Cher and Mick are still rocking. They have still the drive, which I find fascinating. I understand that her voice is gone or can't be like in the past. It was out of this world anyway and will never be heard again. I'm proud and happy to have witnessed her prime and the whole 90ies. Then later "the comeback" with TEOM. But I see some difficulties with her current image. She could be relatable again, if she wants to. I hope she releases the grunge album. I still wonder how it would sound with her Daydream voice. It's so crazy to think about it, but positive crazy.

Everything Fades Away (113,951)

MC is missing a real business team. She hasn't had that type of team around her since Memoirs. Wouldn't it be a shocker if Scooter Braun took over as MC's manager and her career reaches new career highs six months prior to releasing MC17? I believe Scooter Braun would be an unlikely choice for a manager, but a necessary one.

Bryan is really good on it, I'm happy for him. He grounded Mariah, but oh well.

Bryan Tanaka in Tyler Perry's Nextflix show (113,938)

I'm just hanging out at home scrolling Netflix, and I stopped on Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black, and watched the little teaser they have for it. Bryan Tanaka flashed across the screen. I may behind the times here, but did anyone else know about this? There are two seasons. Is the show good? Is he any good? I wondered what he had been up to since their split.
