Huge crowd turns out at vigil for "iconic" Martyn Hett

Hundreds of people gathered in Stockport to remember Martyn Hett, who "the world is falling in love with". Friends held up each of the letters of the word "iconic" to remember the 29-year-old PR manager, who lost his life along with 21 others in the Manchester Arena bombing on Monday.

Martyn, who hit headlines before for his kind gesture encouraging people to support his mother's craft stall, was a huge pop fan and his idol Mariah Carey paid tribute to him in the days after the attack. The vigil at Heaton Moor Park lasted from 7pm until 8pm on Sunday.

Martyn's brother Dan wore a t-shirt showing his picture, which his friend Holly Shortall designed. It included quotes in the form of five star reviews from celebrities who paid tribute to him following his death, including Nick Grimshaw who said: "What a character."

As Martyn's name reached the top trends on Twitter worldwide, his brother Dan posted online: "He would, I think it's safe to say, be [censored] loving this." One user replied, "I am beyond devastated for your loss but taking solace in the fact that the world is falling in love with your brother right now."

In a statement issued by Greater Manchester Police, his devastated family said he "just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time". "We are overwhelmed with the amount of lives he has touched and the kind words that are being said about him," they said.

"Martyn was the icon of all our lives. His infectious laugh and his niche sense of humour will stay with us forever. He lived for every moment of every day and fitted an entire lifetime of memories into his 29 years. Whilst they have taken the life out of Martyn, no one can, and ever will, take Martyn out of our lives."
