Mariah Carey, the elusive chanteuse, did not evade a question about whether or not she currently knows Jennifer Lopez, whose presence has allegedly eluded her over the years.
Long after Carey's notoriously admitted in a 2003 interview "I don't know her" when asked about Lopez, the pop icon gave an update on her familiarity with her peer during a new conversation with Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen.
The latter brought up the popular moment - as he usually does when Carey is a guest - while speaking to Carey about her new album, Here for It All, on Wednesday's show. "I mean, the thing is, I was being honest when I said it, so I don't know how it became so big," Carey said.
She added that "honesty isn't really something that becomes big, most of the time," prompting Cohen to ask a natural follow-up. "To clarify, you still do not know her, right?" Cohen asked.
"How can I suddenly know, you know?" Carey said, laughing alongside the studio audience and Cohen himself. “The amount of time we’ve spent in these chairs discussing whether you know her is amazing," Cohen quipped.
Cohen previously brought up the meme in 2016, when he told Carey he ran into Lopez at an event and asked her about Carey.
"She says you know her," Cohen told Carey, who responded, "Okay, you know what? I'm very forgetful. Apparently I'm forgetful, because I don't remember the fact that it was just like, 'Hi, I'm so and so', and then move on."
She asked Cohen, "What am I supposed to say?" when discussing the original 2003 interview. "Let's all pretend we're best friends because were in that land? It's no offense to anybody," she maintained, adding that she "of course" knows who Lopez is, but just doesn't know her on a personal level.
Carey made light of the situation again when asked by TMZ for an update on her relationship with Lopez, also in 2016. "I still don't know her," the singer-songwriter said with a smile as she signed autographs before getting into a car.
