Mariah knocked out of #1 ... but for how long?

As has already been reported, Mariah's "We Belong Together" is forced to take the runner-up spot to make room for the latest American Idol winner. For the third time in this franchise, an American Idol contestant debuts at #1 with their debut single. This time it is Carrie Underwood whose combined physical and digital singles sales are too much for even the biggest radio hit in BDS history. Additionally next week we will see the debut of Bo Bice's single, also from the American Idol series. Will it debut at #1 as well? We'll have to wait and see.

But don't feel bad for Mariah as she continues to dominate several other charts and also adds some new #1 placings. For the first time in almost ten years, Mariah claims the #1 song at Top 40 Mainstream. This is especially significant because for the longest time this format has turned a cold shoulder to all of Mariah's singles (the exception being "I Know What You Want"). So much so that you'd have to go all the way back to "One Sweet Day" to find Mariah's last #1 at this format. Mariah also claims the #1 spot on its sister chart, Pop 100 Airplay.

On the R&B singles chart, "We Belong Together" stays at #1 for the fifth consecutive week and on the Bubbling Under R&B chart we see "Mine Again" debut at #24. On the R&B album chart Mimi returns to #1 for a fifth non-consecutive week. Since its debut, Mimi has remained in the top two of the R&B album chart. There's no question that Mariah has been one of the most successful artists on the R&B charts this year.

On the Billboard 200 Mariah is able to regain her bullet and move up to #4. Coldplay remain at #1 and therefore the Foo Fighters and Backstreet Boys debut at #2 and #3 respectively. On the lower half of the chart, Usher's Confessions, the #1 album of 2004, finally falls below the 100 mark to #107 in its 65th week. Further on down the chart Jennifer Lopez falls to a disappointing #161 in only its 16th week.
