Aretha returns to VH1 concert

For the fourth consecutive year, VH1 will bring together some of the biggest male and female artists in music history for one unforgettable night, this time spotlighting living legend Aretha Franklin, it was announced today by Jeff Gaspin, Executive Vice President, Programming & Production, VH1. "VH1 Divas Live: The One and Only Aretha Franklin" airs live on Tuesday, April 10 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, from New York City's legendary Radio City Music Hall and is being produced in conjunction with New Hall Productions and the Experience Music Project. The additional talent lineup joining Ms. Franklin will be announced shortly.

Aretha Franklin, the "Queen of Soul," is a living legend, the first female performer inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and an inspiration and influence on countless other female vocalists the world over. Winner of numerous awards, citations and other accolades, including 17 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Legend Award (1991) and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1994), Aretha has also been a Kennedy Center Honoree (1994), winner of the National Medal of the Arts by President Clinton (1999), and has performed at four Presidential Inaugurations. Among her 100 pop and R&B chart hits are "Respect", "A Natural Woman", "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone," "Chain of Fools", "Think", "Spanish Harlem", "Until You Come Back to Me," "Freeway of Love", "Who's Zoomin' Who", "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" with The Eurythmics, and "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" with George Michael.

The "VH1 Divas" phenomenon began on April 14, 1998, when "VH1 Divas Live" spotlighted Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain together onstage at New York's Beacon Theatre. "VH1 Divas Live '99," airing live from the Beacon Theatre on April 13, starred Whitney Houston, Cher, Tina Turner and Brandy, with special guests Sir Elton John, LeAnn Rimes, Mary J. Blige, Faith Hill and Chaka Khan. Last year, the April 11 presentation of "VH1 Divas 2000: A Tribute to Diana Ross" featured Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill and Donna Summer, plus Destiny's Child, Hilary Swank, RuPaul, Queen Latifah and former Supremes singers Lynda Laurence and Scherrie Payne. The three "Divas" specials are among the all-time highest rated broadcasts in VH1's history.

VH1's "Divas" specials raise funds for the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music programs in America's public schools, and to raising awareness of the positive impact that music participation has on students. This year's show will specifically benefit Detroit inner city schools in the name of Ms. Franklin. VH1 produces and programs a wide variety of music-based series, specials, live events and acquisition-based programming that keep viewers in touch with the music they love.
