Mariah Carey unearths "Underneath the Stars" video

What once was lost, now is found! On Friday, Mariah Carey unveiled the long-lost music video for her 1996 single "Underneath the Stars". "It's one of my favorite songs from the Daydream album and somehow never got released. I'm so happy to have found it for #MC30," Carey tweeted to share the news of the video's long-awaited unveiling.

The clip features the superstar crooning the love song's romantic lyrics in a lavender slip dress. "One summer night, we ran away for a while. Laughing we hurried beneath the sky to an obscure place to hide that no one could find. And we drifted to another state of mind. And imagined I was yours and you were mine as we lay upon the grass there in the dark underneath the stars," Carey lilts on the track's opening verse, intercut with footage from her 1996 Daydream World Tour.

The existence of the music video has taken on a near-mythic status among the Lambily over the course of Carey's career, particularly after the icon herself confirmed back in 2012 that she had indeed filmed the visual, but that it had been lost to time. "Little known fact, I actually shot a video for 'Underneath The Stars' in France and England that never got released and I don't know where it is," she wrote at the time.

Instead, Carey's fans had made due, with live footage of her 1996 Tokyo Dome performance - filmed during the Japan leg of the Daydream World Tour - standing in as the fan-favorite track's unofficial music video for more than 24 years.

Released in April of '96 as the fifth and final single off Daydream, "Underneath the Stars" received a limited number of pressings and failed to make an impact on the Hot 100 at the time. It did, however, make a comeback at No. 13 on Billboard's R&B Digital Song Sales chart earlier this year following of the release of Carey's 2020 compilation album The Rarities.
