Carey takes her career less seriously

Singer Mariah Carey finally worked out a formula to keep away from hitting rock-bottom again - taking her job less seriously. The New York native, who suffered an emotional meltdown in 2001 after driving herself into the ground with a heavy workload, admits that she once looked at her music career as the most important aspect of her life.

But since recovering and beginning work in Capri, Italy, on her as-yet-untitled album, she's had a chance to realise her own happiness is far more important than her profession. She says, "It was really a chance for me to be reflective about music and realise its not that deep to get so stressed out over. It's only the music business; it's only TV land."

"I started so young as a demo singer at 14. When I became famous, I started working real hard, making an album a year. It's very draining and people don't realise it. They just see me on TV saying, 'Yeah, here's my new record.'" And now Carey has a new resolution - to take care of herself as her number one priority. She adds, "The caretakers don't get taken care of; you can neglect yourself. It's not a bad thing to say no sometimes and put yourself first."
