Tommy book (108,689)

I had read the book when it first came out back in 2013, but I had forgotten certain things. I have learned that the truth usually lies in the middle. Thanks for the summary, Jamie, much appreciated. And happy belated birthday.

Tommy book (108,688)
by Jamie from UK

So I've now finished the book, the last part of the Mariah section finished with him talking about how they grew even further apart after her decisions. He particularly blames the Grammys, he said that if she'd won for the [Daydream] era it could have maybe saved them a bit longer by putting a band aid over the cracks. He thinks the reason she didn't win anything for [Daydream] was because the powers that be were keeping her in check because she was basically taking over the music industry. He says people in her entourage started spinning stories that she was locked in with security guards. Which is what we hear from Mariah herself, he says the truth is that while he was home sleeping after long working days, she was out at clubs and not returning until daybreak and this was when his anxieties and mistrust began to manifest. He says he can understand how overwhelming everything must have been for Mariah coming from a place of no rules or regulations growing up. People making decisions, suggesting and telling her what to do could have been overwhelming and made her feel like she's lost control of her life. He apologizes saying if it seemed like I was controlling let me apologize again. He admits he was obsessive, but he also admits that was also part of the reason for her success. If [you'rr] not controlling things well in that particular job then [you're] not gonna hold that position for long, he says the problem was him being the chairman of Sony and also her husband at the same time. He says things got more tense with them and she became more resentful that in the end he wrote Mariah a little note from lyrics by Elton John. It read: "Butterflies are free to fly. Fly away." Weeks later they were separated. I have really enjoyed reading this book, it has drawn me back to my memories of Mariah from when I was younger. Whilst we all evolve I miss those early days. It's crazy to think I was 12 years old when Mariah first came out. I was 47 yesterday it's been 35 years of me loving Mariah. At times I've expressed my views and disappoints at times but hopefully you can understand why, when she's been part of my life for so long. So Mariah if you're reading this, I love you and thank you for bringing me so much joy. Next time I'm in NYC with work let's hook up. I can all but dream.

Born this Mimi (108,687)
by Edward from USA

The Emancipation of "Who?"
Are we ever going to sit down and talk about how Mariah just woke up one day, said "Call me Mimi", and the entire world ate that shit up? Child please, who exactly was calling you that before 2005? That nickname was never uttered by any of her close friends during any of her most memorable eras. But suddenly it's "The Emancipation of Mimi" and we all ate it up like it was a fresh batch of hot tamales. Maybe is right there on her birth certificate: Mimi Carey, possibly born in 1970.
Iconic? Absolutely, but Mimi please.

Article: Anderson .Paak confirms Mariah Carey collaboration (108,681)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Bobby A, are you out of your mind? Nobody's selling records like that anymore. What Mariah should focus on is crafting mature lyrics and unforgettable melodies. She'll be starting the defrosting process soon. I doubt we'll get new music anytime soon. She needs three weeks at #1 this year to reclaim the throne, so you can bet she'll be going all out for that. Then next year, she'll be inducted on the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame", it's well deserved and long overdue.

I guess MC really did scrap those ten songs from 2023. Do you think their collaboration will enable MC to have sales numbers like TEOM's first week and year-end sales numbers? I believe MC and .Paak can do it. I am feeling good about their collaboration. What if MC16 is the type of music that MC has never done before? Songs that make people say hmmmmm. Did Mariah just say what I have been thinking for years?

Met Gala (108,678)
by Edward from USA

It's not only you. "When I Feel It" is not a bad song, it's just an unpolished filler. I never heard anybody claim it was a potential hit. I like it more than "Secret Love" and "Sprung" though. The "Once in a Lifetime" ringtone, had it be turned into a full song, it would've been a great one. There's one song that nobody ever talks about that could've been #1, it's called " Migrate".

I might get cancelled for this but is it just me that doesn't really "feel" the song [When I feel it]. Like I don't get the hype. I have seen a lot of people really wanting this to be released and thinking it's a hit and I know music is subjective but personally I never have the urge to listen to it. Like I played [it] the other day just to refresh my memory and I was still like meh. So Lonely, One and Only and GYN would be songs I'd like to see promoted.

Why are you being so bitchy? Your comment was so uncalled for. How did you go from 1995 music to 2025 politics? Last time I checked, none of the tracks on Daydream is titled 401K.

But Daydream was a pop album with just a grain of R&B on two tracks. Tommy had a lot at stake, Mariah's win would've been his too.

I can't help but wonder if Tommy played a role in getting MC shutout at the Grammys. She was pushing further into R&B, something TM despised. Daydream was a commercial success but maybe Tommy orchestrated the shutout at such a high profile event to "shut up" Mariah and push her back to pop/adult contemporary.

Friday feeling (108,594)

Bless you Bobby, I still check in from time to time. Truth is I'm just not a fan of modern day Mariah. Don't get me wrong, I will always love her more than any of you all ever will lol, but I prefer Mariah lamenting about loving someone till the end of time or being alone in love, rather than telling me to GTFO and bragging about riding a D with Ariana Grande.
Anyway, to answer your question, my favourite album is of course the untouchable debut. There is something so magical about those Carey-Margulies compositions, and her voice never sounded as good. That deep, rich tone full of volume and timbre. Oh how I miss it. As for my favourite song, aside from All I Want for Christmas Is You and Vision of Love which I consider separate entities, it would be the regular album version of Fantasy. It came out during the peak of my fandom and hearing it the first time on the radio, I still wistfully think back to that day now and again.
I also enjoy long walks on the beach and quiet nights in. Hope you've been well.

When You Believe (108,586)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
That was really well sung, but it felt kind of soulless to me. With Mariah and Whitney's version of "When You Believe", it's not just about the big vocals, plenty of people can pull those off. It's the little details, the emotion, and the way they each put their own stamp on it that makes it so special. I've seen a lot of covers, and honestly, I usually love some covers more than the originals, but I haven't seen one yet that tops theirs.

I saw this performance of [When You Believe] a few years ago and I had forgotten how much Mariah and Whitney's personalities matter to a song. Sure you can hear Whitney breathing and Mariah's rasp but I would take the two of them singing imperfectly over the two perfect [Broadway] girls version any day.

Does your car have a USB port? If so, just rip your CDs to FLAC format, load them onto a flash drive, plug it into the car's USB port, and you're all set. Assuming your car supports FLAC playback, of course.

I agree. I've ripped all my CDs to FLAC format, which is a lossless digital format that preserves the music exactly as it was intended, without any compression or quality loss. The songs end up being bigger in size, but I don't care as long as I can keep the integrity of the song intact. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't offer uncompressed music for purchase.

MiMi20 CD (108,569)
by Bill from the UK

Playing vinyl on a cheap turntable with a cheap stylus actually damages the vinyl over time, so playing it on a cheap player from the 1950s, or any cheap player for that matter, is not a good idea. It is a medium that only deteriorates with age unless it is treated with utmost care, and that requires a decent turntable and stylus.
While many find the analogue audio experience rich and warm, a compact disc played through a decent hifi set up (with a Digital to Audio (DAC) converter) will sound absolutely fantastic, and a Super Audio CD played on a player designed for that medium is unbeatable. Couple that with a decent pair of speakers and you'll never look back. CDs are far from a dead medium, as all manufacturers continue to make players to this day. CDs provide the best quality audio available without any depreciation in quality and without clicks, pops and scratches that will invade an uncared for vinyl record over time.
As for streaming, unless it is a CD-quality streamer (Tidal, Qobuz) I wouldn't bother, as so much of the music is compressed and sacrificed on streamers like Spotify (the McDonalds of music streamers). Plus as you point out, with the exception of Qobuz, you cannot own and keep the digital music files and they run the risk of being removed or, possibly worse, amped up and compressed to compete with the "loudness wars".
TLDR: CDs are good.

To be honest, it's not really worth it. There's nothing new in this release. I was hoping she'd at least include some leftover tracks from that era. I just don't see the point in celebrating 20 years of such an iconic album without offering anything new. I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy, it's just my humble opinion.

Even though I like the O.D.B. remix of Fantasy, I've always preferred the album version. It was the first version I heard, and without that epic soothing intro, the remix just doesn't have the same impact.
As for Heartbreaker, I prefer the version featuring Jay-Z. The non-rap version stills sounds great to me, but without his verse, it feels like it's missing something.
