Ain't No Other Fan (102,332) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway I have just watched the YouTube video made by Ain't No Other Fan, the video name is long, but here it comes: "The one where Mariah Carey got *high* and proved her voice." It's from her Jamaican concert a few years back, and yes, we all know she was influenced by something, and it was not Chardonnay, darlin'. The performance is a mess, but hell, Mariah was so at ease that evening that she hit high notes and had runs she hadn't done in years and haven't done since. I can admit that I have taken the same substance as Mariah that evening sometimes, aan it really eases you off, makes you feel comfortable, down to earth, high in confidence and really good about yourself. I have watched the video, and all I can say is, if that is what make our girl Mariah relax and hit those high notes and runs, we know she can make, well hell, she should really hit them joints every show, relax, and show them girls and boys how you really sing. She's not only a remarkable vocalist, she's a songwriter, she had an elusive persona, a sexy girl next door persona, and an outsider looking in persona. There's more to Mariah Carey than her voice, she was the whole package and that's why Tommy's investment paid off. Mariah saw a low phase after Tommy only because he was actively sabotaging her. She came back like a Phoenix with TEOM. How many artists can claim to still be as relevant as her after 3 decades. Haters (like Miss Chaka) can attribute her success to men and labels but Mariah is Mariah because she was born to be a star. Although it wasn't a live recording, the fact it had no melisma, no belting, no boring old whistles which frankly I'm sick of now, was refreshing and, after 25 years, something different. If MC reinvented herself and just sang melodious tunes with no unnecessary exaggerated showmanship and fake vocal gymnastics she can't replicate live, it'd go down a storm. I called voice deterioration in 1998/99 when I saw her on The View and Whitney Houston embarrassed her at the Oscar's. I called lip syncing in 1999 when every climax to Heartbreaker and Can't Take That Away was flawless yet she was a raspy struggle through the verses. But I was attacked for it and called not a real fan. The time I was attacked the most was when I called the 2006 Grammys a master cut and paste job. So to see all of this hoopla over these Christmas concerts baffles me. To me honestly, Mariah always sounds this bad. Pull up the Global Citizen concert from last summer. That Hero is almost identical to the MSG one a few days ago. That's why I wasn't spending $400 to see her. She got me once with the Charmbracelet tour. The other thing that you guys don't realize is that they are going to edit and dub the hell out of the Christmas show for CBS. What'll be interesting is how she'll respond when people start juxtaposing the live verses the televised. I take no joy in saying I'm right here and to be honest MC has surprised me too many times for me to say it's over for the voice. I said that in 99 and she shocked the hell out of me with Home for the Holidays in 2001. I said it again in 2012 and she shocked the hell out of me with the Jimmy Fallon's impromptu. I said it again in 2016 and she shocked the hell out of me with Stay the Night on Twitter. All I've wanted since 1997 on Oprah was for her to tell us what the hell happened. So it becomes abundantly clear when the lip syncing and pre-records kick in. Usually though we are put on notice as Mariah will fiddle with the malfunctioning ear piece (which I think is actually her cue to the sound technician), and then waggle her head when she mimes the note. If you enjoyed the concert good for you, but any spectator can see it was one of her worst yet. Hardly phenomenal as you put it. I'm curious, because [our] crew (friends) was in the third row, she was making eye contact, nostrils in full flair, no miming, and heard her voice as clear as a bell (from the stage, not the speakers blasting in the nose-bleeds or though someone's cell phone speakers). All I'm hearing is negativity based on cell phone recordings when the commenters weren't present. She sounds absolutely phenomenal in her current voice. She riffed, she went off singing script while singing, she improvised, she laughed. Monroe killed it during the duet. She sang her heart out with and she sounded as good as any of her epic eras. Never thought I'd be praying for 2018 vocals but here I am doing just that. 2023 will be worse than 2022 for all the reasons you mention. The concerts won't stop as it's a lucrative scam. The ticket prices are astronomical and what you get in exchange is lip syncing, pre-records, awful vocals when live, and jibberish in between the songs. And yes, the squealing she does to prove she can still hit high notes is becoming as excruciating as the finger being stuck in her ear for theatrics. Nodules and whistles (101,788) by MC1989 from Spain Whistles used to be an ornament in her songs, an extra or a plus to her huge voice range and singing abilities. Nowadays the narrative of "I don't remove my nodules because thanks to them I can hit whistle notes" is absurd. But then again, it' s Maria's choice, and I can even understand the fear of going under that kind of surgery. But right now, in these recent years, the whole range has been affected by the nodules, the lack of training and rehearsing, the bad habits and of course age. She even admitted that she doesn't train her voice before concerts during her Masterclass. She said she does a few vocal scales to see if the whistles and the low notes are there and goes singing. That's not that your instrument has become weak due to age or whatever, it's a personal choice of not wanting to warm up and really train on a regular basis. No vocal resting will change that. But hey, Mariah can whistle. Flat whistles that most of the times sound more like high weak screams than whistles. Between the lipped parts she keeps doing these little whistle screams to try to prove that although she lipped, she can hit some similar sound, if we can consider a shout a note. I'm here because I'm a fan. I'm always hoping to see if she gets better and if she can surprise me. I loved her memoir, The Rarities, some of her recent interviews, because I love Mariah. I spent more money on her than in any other artist I admire. I want her to succeed and to reach number one and I want people to appreciate her legendary catalogue apart from AIWFCIY. But lately I feel a little sad when I see her performing. I don't like people including me, talking about how bad this or that performance was. So why keep the exposure that much? If she can't sing good an entire song without any lipped part, lipped whistles etc, then stop performing, stop singing impossible songs for her current voice. Mariah can fool a non fan or a recent fan, but she certainly cannot fool fans like me who have been following her for more than 2 decades and have watched every single performance she has done since 1990. I can recognize immediately when she's lipping. And I had come to a point where I didn't mind she was using prerecorded tracks in some parts of certain songs if the rest of the vocal performance was really good. But this year's performances are really mediocres. Nowadays it's so evident when the lipped part comes in, that she can be happy that the thousands of people who pay the astronomic prices for her shows can think those parts are not lipped, and that they can't hear the differences between her 2022 voice and the 1994 voice for instance in Hark The Herald Angels Sing, where the alternation of those 2 different tones is pure cringe for someone who has a good ear. By the way I've also noticed that her lip synching has become a little more convincing to the general audience because in the recent years she's been using fillers in her face, and though she looks beautiful I also notice a lack of expression in her face. In the past her face muscles revealed very clearly when she was singing live and when not. I saw her in Madrid in 2020 and even though she lipped the same parts - because basically it's the same show with a few changes - the show was good and her voice sounded strong and beautiful. But 2022 is one of her worst vocal moments from what I've seen this far. Again, I hope she gets better. I will support her upcoming movie or series about her life, I would also love to hear her 1995 version of Someone's Ugly Daughter and her upcoming projects. But the problem is that she lost so much voice that she can't handle her songs from 20 or 30 years ago. She even lips the few verses she sings in Big Energy which aren't difficult. She should abandon those old songs. They will always be classics. No need to be struggling singing them and giving us cringy playbacks. She should only sing songs she can perform 100% live. By the way the beautiful duet with Monroe is prerecorded, so it's cringy to watch a kid doing playback with her mom in the middle of a "live show". If we think for a moment, there's not a single song in her concert that she does 100% live. Not a single one. Not even the few verses and first chorus of Miss You Most which also has some prerecorded parts. There are a few good vocal moments here and there during the show but that's it. I love her forever and I will support her albums and stuff in general but she's not a good live performer anymore, until she proves us wrong. (Monday 12 December 2022; 13:16)

I really wish Mariah would get professional help. Now she's also having lower range issues as seen in the "Emotions" and "My All" clips with the unintentional vocal breaks. Another thing I noticed is the repertoire itself isn't the best for a singer her age seeing as it was written "16 to 25 minutes ago", she's missing a lot of qualities that were there before which enabled her sing so well – [agility], fluid and seamless registers, stamina in terms of youth etc just the ease of singing she once had in [general] which was an amalgamation of all these factors and more working hand in hand. This is by no means Toyko Dome, however the confidence and ability to attempt some of what she was doing is certainly there for some reason, and its paying off. Its not like she's trying and failing. I remember when I first listened to CB on the day of release, it was the only album of hers where I was actually frustrated half way through. By the 16th chorus of Lullaby I was like, just shut up already. The whole era was a bit of a miss. But it was the first album after [Glitter] that made me a Mariah fan. There are many irrelevant songs on the normal version. The album is the beginning of the eternal self-copying of itself and the attempt to make Butterfly new. Only through TEOM came a fresh wind. I prefer the bonus tracks.
