Mariah and Janet (54,801)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Mariah giving a shout out to Janet makes me happy. I am a huge Michael Jackson fan and through him I discovered Janet. Can't claim I know her discography well but I admire her and she is definitely an icon. I wish these two would just get into that darn studio and write and record a song. Working with Janet, Mariah can venture into a sound very different yet quite similar to hers. They can contrast and compliment each other simultaneously. They can make an uptempo song we have been dying to hear from Mariah. Ooh the possibilities. Make it happen.

Nick (54,800)

Nick didn't "declare" he is dating anyone, so technically neither did Mariah. Yes she is seen holding hands and being close to Packer but didn't the same thing happen with Brett Ratner just a while back? Wasn't she pictured sitting really close to him with his arms around her back? So for all we know they might just be friends. So coming down to technicality, Mariah didn't go "public" with her relation either. Now about Nick not dating up a storm but just being photographed with random people. Well it's funny how many random girls he has been photographed with since the split went public. If these were really just friends then we would have seen them with him even when Mariah was in his life. Lastly, I will always choose a veiled diss song (even a straight up diss song) about an ex than going to an interview and counting down how many people they have slept with, name dropping while they are still married and have kids at home.

Nick (54,789)

I don't get why Nick is being so silly right after Mariah's dating rumors surfaced. I mean he has been dating up a storm ever since they separated with not even one word from Mariah. In fact him going public with all those girls left Mariah in the media's hands to be portrayed as the "depressed/insecure/crazy diva who can't stand Nick's happiness and is stuffing her mouth with food and drinks". People just went on and on about how Mariah will never get another man with her cuckoo state and blah blah. He also went around flaunting his massive tattoo covering Mariah's name which again went on to give birth to several articles. So now when she is supposedly dating someone Nick is acting out publicly? What good will it do really? I never get why people go on and on about their personal lives on social media. I mean what can others really do to help them? It's silly and pointless. Grow a pair Nick, your big mouth is one of the many reasons the marriage ended.

I am loving this union. They are both mature individuals and are perfect age wise. He is tall so we know Mimi won't tower over him in her heels (not that it was a problem with Nick because he was tall too but this guy is just so tall and buff). He seems to be smitten by her judging by the articles and she seems to be happy with him. I heard Mariah inspired him to lose all the weight and that he was pursuing her for a while. So I am glad Mariah took her time to accept his advances instead of jumping right into it just for the sake of it. I won't even discuss the money angle because these two are individuals who are successful and rich on their own. Plus Mariah looks smoking hot, did anyone notice how her figure is total hourglass material in that orange outfit? I wish them all the best and hope to see more of them together. Stay happy Mariah.

I am sorry if the post offended you and it wasn't solely about Mariah's contribution. I meant how the today's lot has nothing on what the big 5 had. I can't write about the other 4 since I do not follow their careers so Mariah was an example. But oh well really the post wasn't meant to say they have no talent, I think Beyonce is a good singer and Nicki is a fairly good rapper, but they didn't make any contribution that they will be credited for 25 years from now. They may surpass the records but that's about all. And nope never said Mariah was God. She is just an immensely talented singer-songwriter who still manages to crack top 20 without creating controversies or with the help of collaborating with other hot artists. Whitney was a major addict, Janet had family issues big enough to be on reality TV, Madonna's controversies were huge, but their musical contributions are bigger than their controversies. In today's generation, the controversies are bigger than the music. I hope that explains where my post came from.

MC and the current lot: contribution edition (54,627)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I was thinking about Mariah's contribution to the music industry or let's say things MC popularized/ re-introduced/ "mainstreamed". What comes to mind are "whistles", "melisma", "merging/ mainstreaming Hip Hop with Pop/R&B", creating a holiday staple. (I'm aware that the vocal techniques were there before MC but I'm saying she re-introduced/popularized them.) MC is also known as one of the greatest voices in the world and is an immensely talented songwriter who managed to create a signature sound of her own. (I don't follow other singers as seriously as M but I'm sure for Whitney and Celine, Madge and Janet, one can come up with things they pioneered/re-introduced.) Now let's come to today's music industry starlets. In 25 years, what can we say the current lot popularized/mainstreamed? 1) Beyonce: photoshopped thigh gaps, booty, bodysuits. (Don't get me wrong, she has a good voice but she didn't pioneer anything musically, all she has is borrowed from MC, Madonna and Janet.) 2) Ariana: Cat ear hair bands, bodysuits, high ponytail, failed attempt to be the next MC. (In a world where hitting whistle register is replacing MC.) 3) Miley: Twerking, foam finger violation. 4) Katy Perry: Bra squirting, colored wigs, colorful outfits. 5) Taylor: Boyfriend bashing, breaking YouTube views by forming girl squads. 6) Nicki Minaj: Big butt, loud outfits (to be fair, she re-introduced "Baby Got Back"). 7) Selena Gomez: On and off relationship with Bieber. 8) Iggy Azalea: ? I am lucky to have lived in a time where the big 5 or 4 for now (since Janet is still not back) are still making music. Because once they stop, there is nothing much left.

PR (54,556)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I think Mariah's PR team is doing a fantastic job. They are slowly toning down her image without trying to make a sudden drastic change. A drastic change would make people roll their eyes and be like "she's trying to hard". Mariah actually has a very amazing personality but she hides it beneath layers of diva act and while we as fans know that the diva act is just a wall she put up, GP don't understand that and the PR team has done an amazing job of making Mariah more accessible. Credit should also be given to Mariah who is holding herself exceptionally well amidst the storm she is going through. I agree with Stacey about the boobs out thing. I think Mariah always looks a lot better when the boobs are a little bit more covered. Like her Paris ensembles have her boobs mostly covered, one can still see the start of the cleavage area and that suits her more than the really low cut necklines. Bring on more of the casuals though Mariah only you can look so glamorous in them casuals.

Relevancy of Carey / B (54,554)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Mariah is still very relevant and B I couldn't agree more with you. I mentioned in one of my posts way back when that the problem in Mariah's case is that she already has 18 #1's so anything less than a #1 (or at the very least a top 10) from Mariah is dubbed a flop. I mean #Beautiful went to #15 which for any other would be called huge but people almost don't mention #Beautiful. The Hot 100 is just that, the hottest tracks so far and many of Mariah's singles which flopped did crack the Hot 100, which for others would be considered somewhat a success, but for Mariah the standards are held unfairly high. I say unfairly because in today's music industry even current artists are struggling to sell a lot and yet they expect Mariah (who in other cases they dubbed a "has been") to sell more. A lot of her recent singles entered the Hot 100 with almost no promotion. The fact that she can still crack top 20 with little promotion speaks volume. It would have gone higher. People think MC can't make a successful comeback, but I think they are wrong. With the right song, right plan and right promo, only Mariah (from her contemporaries) has the capability to make an impressive comeback and even score a #1 if not more. Now we can't expect TEOM level because that was a different time, but comparatively (adjusting for inflation and crap) she can still make a huge comeback, but she needs to get everything in line. Her voice is improving with each performance, I never doubt her writing capability, now the only problem is release/promo strategies because that's where most of her singles recently flopped. If she can get these right no one can stop Mariah from claiming back her throne.

I got this post on another Mariah board and I thought to share it here. This is really huge and the statistics are from September 2014 onwards. Mariah gives us one reason after another to be proud of her. Slay. According to YouTube Insights, Mariah videos (official and fan upload) have amassed a whopping 678,435,579 views since September 2014. Her top countries in terms of views. 1 - United States - 114,603,023 total views 2 - Brazil - 61,603,482 total views 3 - Philippines - 47,893,449 total views 4 - United Kingdom - 34,725,223 total views 5 - Mexico - 17,588,399 total views 6 - Italy - 17,171,873 total views 7 - France - 16,961,443 total views 8 - Japan - 16,771,600 total views Of the "big 5" female artists, Mariah is ranked #2. Astronomical number of views.

The next move (54,528)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|

I too think that a break right now would do more bad than good. I don't want to pressurize Mariah but if she can, I think she should already start working on her new album and map out exactly how she wants the album to roll out. Mariah, even though she looks 10 years younger, is 45 and age is important in Hollywood. I really believe Mariah has the capability to deliver great material, but the work doesn't end there. Her label needs to back her up and I am strongly against L.A. choosing her next single. L.A. might have been responsible for a lot of artists' success, but I don't like the direction he wants to take Mariah in. Her artistic ability should not be confined. I think the single should be chosen by a group of younger individuals. For Mariah's part, she only needs to keep up the great performances she has been serving up starting from her May leg in Vegas and be confident when she is singing in big event. Also present herself in interviews like she has been doing lately. The rest is on the label to get her big interviews, magazines and big events.

I think why most of us are still in the "is she, isn't she?" phase because just last month when she was asked whether she started working on her new album/or about her plans to get back in the studio, she said she has yet to discuss about the new album with L.A. Reid. L.A himself said something along the same lines when he was asked when he intends to put Mariah back in the studio. Now for the songs you mentioned missing: *singing for Mariah* I wanna know where the songs are, and I want you to show, show me. *breaks into whistle a la X-Factor IWKWLI performance* Plus I mentioned this before, where is the track with DJ Clue? Where is the track with the supposed surprise collaborator?

Licia, haha I will also go crazy if that happens. I really really hope that if this is about a new song or album, they should not rush release it and be a scattered mess like the last few of her singles. This needs to be organized and they should announce it when they have everything ready. B, that is an exciting thought and I visited the store when I went to Paris and more than being excited about it being the flagship store of the iconic LV, I was over the moon that I was standing in a place where Mariah was.

Being a major tease. Continuously posting pictures in the studio tagging or hash-tagging Mariah. Taking opinions from the fans about what collaborations Mariah should do. What are you doing Jimmy? Is there an album in the works or nah? Mariah seems to be doing a few secret projects. Plus she is mingling it up with designers from Balmain, Alaia and Herve Leger and hanging out with Jean Paul Goude. Spill the beans this instant.

My last post about the outfits was just a joke by the way. I don't mind being the outfit girl though haha. Anyways look there are time when I don't agree with many people on this board (whether it's me being positive and them being negative or the other way around), but I really don't think I am in a position to tell anyone else to leave the board simply because I believe everyone comes to this board because something or the other still ties them to Mariah, and I like to believe that it's love. I also try to look for good in people and I think people did forget that you were defending MC when the Morgan episode came along in your post "The Morgan misrepresentation (54,268)", when a lot of the positive fans were falling for the story. I guess we all have different ways of expressing and we all have different expectations from Mariah.

ISB is definitely a great video, the channeling of Marilyn and the shot of her with the high ponytail, beautiful. I also love the video for the remix. Goes really well with the song. Mariah looks gorgeous as ever. I think my favorite Mariah videos are from Butterfly (all of the B. Fly videos are gorgeous) and TEOM. With TEOM she stepped up the glamor with one video being more glamorous than the other.

Outfits (54,489)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Hey hey hey the outfits are important. Hahaha. Someone needs to keep it in check. I am not only about the outfits though. I mean obviously there is a lull going on right now since MC is on a break and I have already went on and on about things I would like her to do, so instead of being repetitive, I'm doing occasional outfit reviews. Reviews in the loose sense that is. I'm waiting for her next project, hopefully she'll take into consideration what a lot of the members on this board, including me had suggested over the weeks, years even.
