I don't believe she was the very first, but she was definitely the first artist with a large following and the first "mainstream" artist to adopt this style with the Fantasy remix. Since then, as we know, every Tom Dick and Harry has had a guest rapper on their singles.

Re: These 3 remixes (99,899) (99,902)

I was listening to the I Still Believe MC30 EP on a long train ride the other day. I must say, Mariah really went to town with the remixes. The Pure Imagination and Stevie J mixes were completely re-sung and the only thing they had in common with the original was the title. The incorporation of the Willy Wonka song was genius. Then of course the Morales club mix is euphoric and upbeat, with a few new ad libs and alternate takes of lines from the album version. And then as you mention Bobby A, there's the King's Mix and the Eve of Souls mix which were just anthems. All included new vocals and mix was different from the one before. Just superb. And of course, the original is understated and beautiful in its own right.

I'm unsure how involved MC was with JD's remix of Never Forget You. She's always stated the first time they worked together was for ABMB. I think JD was perhaps just drafted in to remix NFY and that was it. The vocals were not re-sung or anything, so I doubt they even met in the studio at that time.
There's no denying ABMB was a magic combination. Even more so than We Belong Together in my view. It is truly one of her best ever songs.

No, she wore the black and white checked ones in the With You video. Also during Charmbracelet she wore jeans.

I hope MC does do more for the anniversary than the reworking of the songs. I wasn't overly enthralled with Close My Eyes on The Rarities, but the Valentine's mix of We Belong Together was good so there is a "distant glimmer of hope" as the saying goes. I hope she puts out the Butterfly concert and a hi-res edition of the (original) album too.

Whoa. The spirit of the post was to highlight that whenever I read an article about, or see fans post about, Hero it is always in the negative. The point was that this trend emerged after Mariah expressed her distaste towards the song. I was thinking out loud about how some fans previously stood behind the song until Mariah's own opinions on it changed their minds. The same fans then complain that all Mariah's legacy will now consist of is a Christmas song. Well, that's their own doing. If you don't like it then great. Through the Rain has great lyrics, but the whole song is built on Hero's blueprint.

Article: The number ones: Mariah Carey's "Hero" (99,839)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
It really annoys me how many people trash talk Hero these days. I know it's "cool" to not like it, especially ever since Mariah shocked us all by proclaiming that she never liked the song. Of course, whatever Mariah says, the lambs do.
What irks me, is before Mariah made that announcement during her concert, Hero was always well received by the fans. There was no reference to it being "too schmaltzy" or "too middle of the road" like everyone always says these days. Until AIWFCIY stole its crown, Hero was Mariah's signature tune. It was her "I Will Always Live You" and her "My Heart Will Go On", and everyone seemed fine with that. It was always receiving airplay on the radio, it was from her best-selling album (and probably significantly helped those album sales), it had a positive, universal message, and Mariah said no other song of hers ever got such a response from her fans in respect of the letters she used to get about it.
Mariah even said the song is for her fans, and yet here we all are throwing it back in her face, because it's the in-thing to not like it anymore? I reckon everybody here is a closet Hero fan, and it introduced many people to Mariah's music.
The song is expertly crafted, wonderfully written, and beautifully sung. I for one will always stand by the song, even when no one else will.

Haha, no there is some truth to what you say, albeit not necessarily in Europe. In Japan the album releases for most artists always had a bonus track. This was because, due to their economy, it was cheaper to import a CD from the US/elsewhere than it was to buy locally, so bonus tracks were added to encourage local purchases. In Europe, it was expensive to import from the US. I curse that I had to build my collection in the 90s as the US single imports were a lot of money. I remember the 2 track Dreamlover CD was almost £10. Back then, that was a lot of money for two tracks. But luckily the UK in particular was blessed with gorgeous picture discs, exclusive remixes, unique picture sleeves etc. We were treated very well indeed.

Lol, but by that logic, wouldn't you all have to buy the imported albums and singles from Europe so you could have all her remixes and bonus tracks?

DYKWYGT (TFM) was such an elegant end to the #1's album. It's odd how Sony International treated Europe and the other regions better than her home turf. Even the single releases over here had more exclusives and unique mixes that didn't appear in the US. And we had the better end to Music Box.

It's strange because I've done the opposite this end. I try to listen to Music Box without EFA and ending it with All I've Ever Wanted, and it just feels so incomplete. AIEW is a beautiful song in many ways, but it ends the album on nothing more special than Just to Hold You Once Again. When Rainbow came out Mariah said it was her first album that ended on a happy note. I always wondered if she actually considered EFA to be the closing track for Music Box for that purpose. I understand what you mean about it not fitting with the rest of the album, but that's what makes it stand out so much and make such a statement.

Such a great ending, you're right. It's such a masterstroke to end Music Box with such a poignant closure. It's so weird/unfair that the US fans never experienced Music Box the same way the rest of the world did, as it adds a whole nother layer to the album, and is probably her best closing track.

With ABMB, do you mean the wall of sound "you and I" fade out, or the live version that ends with the opening guitar strum? Personally both are superb.

Yes, Heartbreaker's acapella run down at the end is superb when you hear all the harmonising parts, really shows the "wall of sound" thing Mariah does so well. And yes, when I first listened to WBT for the first time I was nodding my head along nicely to it thinking it was different, a bit Breakdown-esque with the rapid fire delivery of the lines, and then the key change made me sit up and do exactly as you say haha.

The original Fantasy is just pure ear candy, I love it. I too miss the Price Sisters and Melonie. What an era, and what a collective sound they all made. Honestly I sometimes think their contribution to Merry Christmas is massively overlooked. Without them it wouldn't sound half as amazing as it does.

Favourite ending (99,766)
by Bill from the UK

So stepping away from the racism and the woke conversations and bringing it back to Mariah, do any of y'all have a favourite ending of Mariah's?
Most of her lead singles have great endings, especially Emotions when the music and background singers all stop on the same note and she's left finishing her run acapella, and down to such a low note, considering the stratospheric heights she reached moments earlier.
I also love the "do do do" finish of Firecracker Loverboy.

No, I wouldn't say he was racist at all. I mean he married her knowing she was mixed. I see it more that he was a good businessman who knew what played to the biggest demographics and was protecting his investment. Music Box sold twice or three times as many copies as Butterfly, and he wanted for bang for his buck. If you pardon the pun.
