She comes off as zombie like in interviews now. Im guessing it could be maintenance medication for her disorder, which is completely understandable, but is it worth damaging her legacy further or getting a shell of what she used to be? I am sure I both read interviews about this in the early 90's, and heard Mariah tell this on tv. It's the same with the acting. She said in the early 90's that she didn't want to be an actress, because singers should do what they know. She also was against having kids that would grow up in the public eye. My former neighbor used to work for Sony Music, and met her/worked with her a lot of times when she gave interviews or was doing other promotional stuff, and she said that Mariah went from being a humble and shy person to lose contact with the real world in just a few years (already around 1994 when she released her Christmas album). She was a totally different person in her eyes. I think Mariah who lives in Mariah World, tries to make her own story to fit in what picture she wants us to believe in. And I think that she believes it's the truth, even if it's not. It's very easy to give people (or make) false memories of how things went. I hope that my message makes some sense. The issue I have is there is a whole generation now who only know her as this extravagant diva, who shuffles around like some aging silver screen actress in denial about her fading youth. They know her for a Christmas song that swings by every year, defrosting, and being a diva. They didn't see If It's Over on SNL. They didn't witness the Daydream tour (I attended London by the way). They didn't get swept up in Joy to the World at St John the Divine. They see her getting wheeled out every so often to lip sync, grumble about the bad lighting, have a pop at J.Lo, and then get carried away as the Butterfly outro plays. For me I would like more r&b with a touch of pop. Unfortunately r&b is kind of dead right now, most artists are doing pop/adult contemporary. Mariah was able to pull off r&b with Caution so maybe she could do it again but I think she needs something like "Beautiful" or "Dreamlover". I do remember reading interviews where she said that she didn't want to be an actress, and that singers/musicians should stick to what they knew, which was music. A full-throated defense of Glitter (113,544) by Lambi from USA My acting coach said that for acting to be believable, the actor needs to have experienced the emotions, or at least been in close proximity to what they're trying to portray with their facial expressions. This is why Heath Ledger purposely isolated himself in a hotel room to develop the mindset of the Joker. He fully immersed himself in the psyche of his character. It's called method acting. I'd say Mariah did well in scenes that have everything to do with being a singer-songwriter. Finding out her song was on the radio for the first time. Getting more excited as the melody she's writing improves. These are all emotions she had already felt, and they came out naturally in the movie. But it was also sometimes inconsistent. For instance, she did really well lip syncing Don't Funk at that club when she was put on the spot by Dice, then did pretty poorly miming All My Life when she took over Sylk in the studio. The more family-oriented emotions, like seeing her movie mom on drugs and wandering the streets, probably came from similar feelings to dealing with Alison. Then there are the Tommy-related emotions required for Dice's tantrums and jealousy. When he called Da Brat fat ass, she might have drawn from emotions tied to when Tommy degraded Diddy. Her acting was very strong in that scene in my opinion. Then being physically threatened by Terrence Howard because Dice didn't pay 100k. Those reference emotions could connect to what she felt when Tommy put a knife to her cheek. I wouldn't say she was objectively bad, but a bit unseasoned. I don't think she was quite ready for a lead role just yet. I also felt like it needed better cinematography. I'd even argue better songs. Mariah has written such vivid songs. She quite literally paints a picture with her lyrics. This would have been the perfect opportunity to write another Underneath the Stars or Fourth of July, but instead we got the haunting, suicide-themed Twister, which felt awkwardly shoehorned into her mother's disappearance. It felt like, "whatever, we have to make use of the soundtrack, let's just put this here". Overall, the movie direction fell far short of her songwriting's standard. Mariah's always said all she wanted to be was a singer and an actress growing up. Actress being there is a pretty big deal. I'd say with the right material and once all the inhibitions are gone, she could be great. She's proven this with Precious. I'm not shutting down MC just yet in her acting pursuit. She's got a larger emotions palette just from what she went through the last 15 years, meaning there are plenty of inspirations to take from. (Sunday 5 April 2026; 00:40)

I was at the cinema watching it and believe me it was cringe to sit there with only two others. The reason was not bad marketing, but bad acting and horrible reviews because of that. Mariah doesn't express emotions when acting. She can make a small part in a movie ok, but no more than that. She doesn't use her voice other than in a monotone way, her hands are divaish when acting, and her face expressions doesn't look natural. She should not continue in that direction. These hospital stays directly conflicted with the rollout for the movie and soundtrack. As I said, the movie is not great. It was a commercial vehicle to launch her into the movie industry so she could move into more respectable roles like the one in "Wisegirls". And, yes, Webmaster, the acting in "Glitter" is on par with "The Bodyguard" and "Mahogany" - both of which received mixed to negative reviews but were redeemed by having hits from the respective soundtracks. I remember one of my college roommates basically saying the same thing as critics at the time: Mariah was a studio creation. Then I played my roommate Emotions Unplugged. She was stunned, as I think a lot of critics were stunned and silenced. Mariah was the real deal. Which I'm not sure why even in 1992 many critics thought MC was a studio creation. MTV Unplugged (113,415) by Jamie from UK 33 years ago today Mariah recorded her MTV Unplugged session at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in New York. Can you imagine having gone to see this it would have been phenomenal. Her voice then was sensational and she was in my eyes then a class act. The way she held herself on that stage oozed soul, and a confidence that captivated the audience. While she says she wasn't confident at all at the time, her natural and grounded presence there was more powerful than anything she does now. There was no fanfares no dancers just raw talent, I sometimes wish she could have held onto this concept moving forward. Stayed in this genre as such and just been an artist that did rare small intimate gigs that made her more exclusive and sort after by the public. I'm speaking more from the artistry side of things, being more exclusive to me is somewhat more adhering to being out there filling arenas. Obviously it's hypothetical, but I was wondering would we be where we are now had she stuck to a more low key concept, where the music and the voice were front and center, with more quality adult contemporary songs, even the ones we've seen on HFIA, without the diva portrayal and hype. Would we have a better quality voice still? Would Mariah be less affected and still be herself. Would she be more connected and relatable? Whilst older would she still command the stage like she once did? Obviously this is me just putting a spin on things and in no way am I dissing her career path as I wouldn't still be here as a fan if I was. With the "current personality and her performance level", that's a good point too. I wonder what the answer could be about the current personality and performances? I don't know the answer but I would say jazz, blues and retro soul suits better than hip-hop or modern RnB songs for a legend like Mariah nowadays. I think regaining her chest and head tone vocal ranges and fixing the vocal damage far outweighs her retention of the whistle note range. Maybe she could go to the studio and record a whole barrage of whistle runs and background vocals and highlights she can use for later recordings, so that in case she loses her ability to do whistle notes, she can still put them in future albums. It would be an intense recovery post-surgery and she would have to swallow her pride and take speech training with a competent speech pathologist, and also singing/vocal training from real (not these celebrity vocal trainers that praise J-Lo to keep their job and say You did that Kween). Nodules (113,228) by Giovanni from USA I doubt Mariah had her nodules removed. The success rate for nodules removal especially today is high. If anything she would sound better. Her problem is she doesn't take care of her voice like she used to like in her younger days. A lot of fans say she has vocal damage but I disagree it's definitely the champagne. Vocal damage can be fixed. One of the things I love about the Caution album is that her voice sounds very good especially in. Even during the pandemic she showed she was in a good place vocally. I don't wanna judge Mariah but I definitely think she turned to drinking to cope with something. A lot of people in the industry turn to drugs or drinking to cope with the stress life of being an artist or because of loneliness/depression. I sometimes think would she be in a better place emotionally had she and Nick still been together. Even with Bryan she looked very happy and alive which makes me believe she might feel lonely at times. I truly believe her kids help a lot and give her a reason to live.
