Your last point made me laugh. It is so sad if that is the real problem with her creativity. It is time to claim those insurance money.

She's definitely still one hell of a writer though. With You proves that. And if you took away some of the production and the state of her voice, Cry, HFIA, and NII were pretty stellar work.
But fair, meds absolutely affect your creative process. She still has her writing chops, but because of this seemingly declining health she's got going on, it just takes longer.
Another thing I noticed is that Mariah has always said she likes to go on walks for ideas to come and marinate. It's also a way for creatives to work through a mental block. She can't even walk now.

MC 2017? (113,970)
by TJ from Norway

I think she has stagnated as a musician a long time ago. She makes what she thinks is safe, and then it fails. This old school RnB is just boring (in my opinion). Her voice has become metallic and sounds more like the chipmunks characters. It's difficult to hear what she is singing, because of the voice and the mumbling throughout some songs. I also think that her lyrics used to be more mature back in the days. It's to much swearing and brand naming in her latest work. The melodies are almost gone compared to how she sang and produced in her early days. I'm tired of the "I don't know her" attitude, and I think she has lost that fight against J.Lo (who acts much more mature, polite and classy about the whole thing). Mariah comes out as simple and bitter, acting like a spoiled child. Her interviews are not interesting because there has been absolutely nothing new for the last 10-15 years. It's like she's on repeat. She doesn't get the respect she wants and there's reasons for that. She just doesn't realise it.
I believe that most people outside this board think she is an outdated diva with crazy demands and no connection with the real world (or that she stopped making music in 2005). Most of my friends can't stand her, and when I mention her name to people they are either "who is that?" or "she is horrible". Guess who is fighting for her in those discussions. That's me.

You don't have to love everything Mariah does to be a fan. But saying it's "so many things" without actually explaining what those things are doesn't really say much. If your feelings have changed, that's valid. I'm just curious what specifically changed for you.

You've been a fan since 1990, yet one album erased 35 years of support? Sounds less like loyalty and more like nostalgia with a volume knob. If the "true Mariah" only exists in the past, maybe you're a fan of your memories rather than the artist herself.

I'm all the same. I've been standing by her side since 1990, but her latest album was the last drop for me. I bought my self a new sound system with dvd/cd player. I now enjoy her old music, and what I will call the "true Mariah", and yes, I will keep on posting here.

For me, I have already lost my excitement for another MC album. At least for now. All the promotion in the world can't change the fact that she can't sing/perform. She comes off as zombie like in interviews now. Im guessing it could be maintenance medication for her disorder, which is completely understandable, but is it worth damaging her legacy further or getting a shell of what she used to be? The excitement always return the closer she gets to releasing new music, but as soon as I see her lackluster non live performance, it just ruins the momentum.

Death Becomes Her (113,926)
by TJ from Norway

Looking at those pictures of MC in the white dress, makes me a little sad. When I was younger, I hoped that she would age with grace and not fall into this plastic fantastic world of celebrities. Yes, she looks "youthful", but it is not her face anymore. It's like looking at a completely different person, when you compare her 1992 face and now. It looks sad, hurt and soulless. Anyone seen the movie Death Becomes Her?

Mariah cover songs (113,798)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States

A covers compilation album is an excellent idea. Mariah has so many great and lesser known cover songs, and it would be great to have them all in one place.
1. Don't Play That Song (Live) 2. I'll Be There 3. Just Be Good To Me (live from Music Box Tour or Daydream Tour) 4. Without You 5. My Prayer 6. Endless Love 7. Open Arms 8. The Beautiful Ones 9. If You Only Knew (live) 10. Got to Be Real (live with Patti LaBelle) 11. I Still Believe 12. Sweetheart 13. Do You Know Where You're Going To? 14. Against All Odds 15. Out Here On My Own 16. Didn't Mean to Turn You On 17. Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (No Rap Version) 18. Bringin' on the Heartbreak 19. You And I (Live) 20. With You I Am Born Again (live with John Legend) 21. Help Me Make It Through the Night (from "Tennessee") 22. I Want to Know What Love Is 23. One More Try 24. Lullaby of Birdland (live) 25. Don't Explain (live) 26. My Love
This could easily be a two-disc compilation, and I bet Mariah has some others buried in the vault.

That's the same video that we have been discussing.
I became a huge fan during the release of her debut album, but started collecting cd singles in 1993, and are still looking for some old "gold" from her first two albums. I'm just so glad I experienced the pre-diva version.

I don't know what the fuss is about Brenda K. Starr and Mariah here, so I didn't jump into the discussion. And then I came across this video and watched it.
Some comments about her are not nice, but one thing is for sure. Whether people acknowledge it or not, Brenda is instrumental in Mariah's career. And I like her too.

But Brenda K Starr is also making up a story here, isn't she (not asking myself, just adding something more to my other message)? Didn't Mariah release I still Believe in 1998 or something, and the Around the World DVD in 99? Wasn't her breakdown in 2001? We are all getting older and forgetful. That includes Brenda too.

Brenda K on relationship with MC (113,751)

I think Brenda is telling the truth about how the tape was given to Tommy. I am sure I both read interviews about this in the early 90's, and heard Mariah tell this on tv. It's the same with the acting. She said in the early 90's that she didn't want to be an actress, because singers should do what they know. She also was against having kids that would grow up in the public eye.
My former neighbor used to work for Sony Music, and met her/worked with her a lot of times when she gave interviews or was doing other promotional stuff, and she said that Mariah went from being a humble and shy person to lose contact with the real world in just a few years (already around 1994 when she released her Christmas album). She was a totally different person in her eyes.
I think Mariah who lives in Mariah World, tries to make her own story to fit in what picture she wants us to believe in. And I think that she believes it's the truth, even if it's not. It's very easy to give people (or make) false memories of how things went.
I hope that my message makes some sense.

After reading that Ariana's eight album will be called Petals, I can tell that she really thinks the world of Mariah Carey. Ariana has been doing her best to emulate MC for past three years. She is enamored with love for MC. I already see the Rainbow connection and influence with the Eternal Sunshine tour and the Petal summer album drop. I can't wait for Petals to drop on July 31st. Does anyone else feel what Ariana is trying say about her love for MC?

The Revival Of Mariah Carey (113,684)
by Bill from the UK

Good post. The issue I have is there is a whole generation now who only know her as this extravagant diva, who shuffles around like some aging silver screen actress in denial about her fading youth. They know her for a Christmas song that swings by every year, defrosting, and being a diva. They didn't see If It's Over on SNL. They didn't witness the Daydream tour (I attended London by the way). They didn't get swept up in Joy to the World at St John the Divine. They see her getting wheeled out every so often to lip sync, grumble about the bad lighting, have a pop at J.Lo, and then get carried away as the Butterfly outro plays.
The bad now outweighs the good.

Is it the range, or the nasal metallic sound that is the problem with her voice these days? I tried to listen to the same song a couple of weeks ago, but I had to turn it off, because the sound of her voice just hurt my ears. It is not pleasant to listen to.

I listened to the ballad HFIA today and you can tell MC's 90s voice is still there underneath all that is ailing her vocal chords. I hope MC finds a doctor who can help improve accessing her range again. I believe miracles can happen if we only have faith the size of a mustard seed.

Maybe she doesn't have enough fans to vote for her to win. There's no secret that she lost millions of fans in the late 90's. The few that has attended after that, aren't enough.

If Mariah didn't have respect in the industry, she wouldn't have been nominated 3 times. Who do you think allows her on the ballot? It's not the fans that choose that, it's the fans that vote for the finalists. You didn't, therefore she isn't.
I keep forgetting this is a board of Celine fans who also like Mariah's 1993 work. This just in - respect isn't a clothing line. Nobody is in the [Hall of Fame] for their attire. The HOF is heavily influenced by rock and roll. The Beatles aren't well loved - they're well promoted, frequently hyped up, have documentaries all the time, and even a movie or two. That's called PR. Because people make big money off of them.
Whitney was never nominated while she was alive. She could've been inducted in 2010. Let that sink in. Are you going to claim it was because of the drugs? That's pretty rock n' roll. She had a career push and a movie about her after her death, because - gasp - the industry can now make money off of her. They even have her hologram on tour.
MC has her own publishing and doesn't allow her music to be used. They can't make money off of her, yet she's nominated. Meanwhile, she has no strong fanbase. They scattered. Pink and Shakira's are highly active and engaged. Half of Mariah's didn't know she was up for the award, how to vote for her, and that they could do it more than once. MC's fans aren't engaged - it's been over 25 years and you're all still harping on her clothes. Deep as a puddle.

I don't know if I asked this before so if I did I apologize. What direction do some of you want Mariah to take with the next album? For me I would like more r&b with a touch of pop. Unfortunately r&b is kind of dead right now, most artists are doing pop/adult contemporary. Mariah was able to pull off r&b with Caution so maybe she could do it again but I think she needs something like "Beautiful" or "Dreamlover". I heard Pharrell Williams was contacted by a legendary female artist so I wonder if it was Mariah, Beyonce or someone else? I just hope the next album makes more noise and doesn't have anymore 2 minute songs lol.

I can't remember Mariah saying that she always wanted to act when she was growing up. I do remember reading interviews where she said that she didn't want to be an actress, and that singers/musicians should stick to what they knew, which was music. If this was after the release of Bodyguard or Evita, I can't recall.

A full-throated defense of Glitter (113,544)
by Lambi from USA

My acting coach said that for acting to be believable, the actor needs to have experienced the emotions, or at least been in close proximity to what they're trying to portray with their facial expressions. This is why Heath Ledger purposely isolated himself in a hotel room to develop the mindset of the Joker. He fully immersed himself in the psyche of his character. It's called method acting.
I'd say Mariah did well in scenes that have everything to do with being a singer-songwriter. Finding out her song was on the radio for the first time. Getting more excited as the melody she's writing improves. These are all emotions she had already felt, and they came out naturally in the movie.
But it was also sometimes inconsistent. For instance, she did really well lip syncing Don't Funk at that club when she was put on the spot by Dice, then did pretty poorly miming All My Life when she took over Sylk in the studio.
The more family-oriented emotions, like seeing her movie mom on drugs and wandering the streets, probably came from similar feelings to dealing with Alison. Then there are the Tommy-related emotions required for Dice's tantrums and jealousy. When he called Da Brat fat ass, she might have drawn from emotions tied to when Tommy degraded Diddy. Her acting was very strong in that scene in my opinion. Then being physically threatened by Terrence Howard because Dice didn't pay 100k. Those reference emotions could connect to what she felt when Tommy put a knife to her cheek.
I wouldn't say she was objectively bad, but a bit unseasoned. I don't think she was quite ready for a lead role just yet. I also felt like it needed better cinematography. I'd even argue better songs. Mariah has written such vivid songs. She quite literally paints a picture with her lyrics. This would have been the perfect opportunity to write another Underneath the Stars or Fourth of July, but instead we got the haunting, suicide-themed Twister, which felt awkwardly shoehorned into her mother's disappearance. It felt like, "whatever, we have to make use of the soundtrack, let's just put this here". Overall, the movie direction fell far short of her songwriting's standard.
Mariah's always said all she wanted to be was a singer and an actress growing up. Actress being there is a pretty big deal. I'd say with the right material and once all the inhibitions are gone, she could be great. She's proven this with Precious. I'm not shutting down MC just yet in her acting pursuit. She's got a larger emotions palette just from what she went through the last 15 years, meaning there are plenty of inspirations to take from.

Glitter - my wish for MC in 2026 (113,519)
by TJ from Norway

That's just my subjective opinion, just as yours is also subjective. I was at the cinema watching it and believe me it was cringe to sit there with only two others. The reason was not bad marketing, but bad acting and horrible reviews because of that.
Mariah doesn't express emotions when acting. She can make a small part in a movie ok, but no more than that. She doesn't use her voice other than in a monotone way, her hands are divaish when acting, and her face expressions doesn't look natural. She should not continue in that direction. That's my opinion, and nothing more, but I express it here.
Happy easter.

It's a bit harsh to say that it was embarrassing to watch Glitter. I don't agree with that. I enjoyed it very much.
Her small role in "The Bachelor" with Chris O'Donnell and Renée Zellweger- she was good there, basically playing the character similar to her role as Raychel from Wisegirls.
And let´s be real - neither Mariah or Whitney are actresses. Mariah was pushed to hard to work and the result was rushed.

Yes, I saw the movie twice with my friends at my hometown. I was a teen back then. We had a good time at the cinema, we almost had the cinema hall for ourself. I still have the cinema magazine and ticket. I have also poignant memories, it was the time the carefree 90ies really finally ended because of 9/11. But back to MC, I love Glitter the album, the movie is okay, it's not so bad. I have it on DVD, it was also my first DVD, it was quite expensive.

You can't compare the acting in Glitter to The Bodyguard. WH was clearly a better actress than Mariah. It was embarrassing to watch Glitter.

Yeah, but her ability to promote the movie and the album was severely limited by the fact that she was hospitalized twice for bipolar II disorder - once in Connecticut in July/August 2001 and once in Los Angeles in September 2001. These hospital stays directly conflicted with the rollout for the movie and soundtrack.
As I said, the movie is not great. It was a commercial vehicle to launch her into the movie industry so she could move into more respectable roles like the one in "Wisegirls".
And, yes, Webmaster, the acting in "Glitter" is on par with "The Bodyguard" and "Mahogany" - both of which received mixed to negative reviews but were redeemed by having hits from the respective soundtracks.

I believe that some of the post millennium fans don't appreciate that area because the music sounds dated to them. I too are so thankful for being able to experience that time and success. I guess it's how the fans of Taylor Swift have it today.
I remember taping all the shows, concerts and so on. Buying multiple singles because she released like a million versions of every hit.

MTV Unplugged (113,419)

Yup, we are a bunch of old timers, lol. What a magical concert. I remember one of my college roommates basically saying the same thing as critics at the time: Mariah was a studio creation. Then I played my roommate Emotions Unplugged. She was stunned, as I think a lot of critics were stunned and silenced. Mariah was the real deal. Which I'm not sure why even in 1992 many critics thought MC was a studio creation. Did they miss the Tatoo Club performances, Saturday Night Live, hello Vanishing, right? Anyway, no matter what we see today, there is no doubt of her once in a generation talent. I'll be forever thankful I lived to see it.

I'm sad to point out that it has to be 34 years. Makes me feel old.

33 years ago today Mariah recorded her MTV Unplugged session at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in New York. Can you imagine having gone to see this it would have been phenomenal. Her voice then was sensational and she was in my eyes then a class act. The way she held herself on that stage oozed soul, and a confidence that captivated the audience. While she says she wasn't confident at all at the time, her natural and grounded presence there was more powerful than anything she does now. There was no fanfares no dancers just raw talent, I sometimes wish she could have held onto this concept moving forward. Stayed in this genre as such and just been an artist that did rare small intimate gigs that made her more exclusive and sort after by the public. I'm speaking more from the artistry side of things, being more exclusive to me is somewhat more adhering to being out there filling arenas. Obviously it's hypothetical, but I was wondering would we be where we are now had she stuck to a more low key concept, where the music and the voice were front and center, with more quality adult contemporary songs, even the ones we've seen on HFIA, without the diva portrayal and hype. Would we have a better quality voice still? Would Mariah be less affected and still be herself. Would she be more connected and relatable? Whilst older would she still command the stage like she once did? Obviously this is me just putting a spin on things and in no way am I dissing her career path as I wouldn't still be here as a fan if I was. Would you like to have seen this path or something similar?

She should release that album as fast as possible. There was some hype about it in media, but soon forgotten. We all know that she has messed up releases before.

That Variety interview was so dry. You could tell the interviewer had done their homework and crafted some really compelling questions.
What is the deal with SUD? People have been asking about it for almost 6 years. What is it she is still working out?
What's the deal with Glitter. It's mid-March and you don't know if you're re-releasing (which makes taking it off streaming stupid) or making a deluxe? Shouldn't the factories be printing the vinyls now for a September 2026 release date?
Most importantly where the F is Daydream30?
Where is the state business woman who is supposed to be running this empire?

Type Dangerous and why it failed (113,336)

I know you didn't ask me, but I don't think Mariah would reach that spot with any song from that album. It's almost impossible for an artist to get a number one after that many years in the business. Cher did, but she did something completely new when it happened.

Do you think "My Love" will go to No. 1 in the UK, at least, if she releases it?

What a great post. I have the same thought about all the mentioned things. You described it perfectly. With the "current personality and her performance level", that's a good point too. I wonder what the answer could be about the current personality and performances? I don't know the answer but I would say jazz, blues and retro soul suits better than hip-hop or modern RnB songs for a legend like Mariah nowadays. "My love" is a highlight on HFIA and such a beautiful song and cover.
