Mariah Carey and record label issues (39,470)
by DivergentIntel from United States

IMHO, I think MC should go completely independent. That way she cuts out the middle man and gets all of the profits. Macklemore is completely independent with no record label backing him and look at his success. Mariah Carey has an empire and lots of resources and her name alone to further establish and further her career. That way there is no more fighting or stress with big record labels and companies.

Kelly Price controversy (39,317)
by DivergentIntel from United States

I was always curious if MC was the intended victim or target on KP's tweet. The only other person I could thi k of that KP was talking about if she wasn't referring to MC, is that maybe KP was talking about Whitney Houston perhaps? I wish KP would be 100% honest with herself and with others for change but for now it is what it is.

I've always wondered if MC and Ben Marguiles could ever reconcile and work with each other again? They are also a magic duo with magical brilliant musical results as we saw on MC's debut album. Ben Marguiles also was in a relationship with MC also.

MC vocals (39,287)
by DivergentIntel from United States

I'm guessing that since she hired new management and took over and took control over her image and career that it perhaps put more stress on her and which meant less sleep and more independence that it probably took it's toll on her and thus vocals were not as good or the same as the past. Remember that MC uses humidifiers which she got as advice from Luther Vandross to have better clearer vocal performances along with ample rest.

Re: Mariah Carey vocals (39,286)

I have a feeling that Mariah Carey changed her tonality or vocal style slightly on purpose during the making of Butterfly. Even Daydream had certain slight differences but it still kept the vain of the deep rich sultry and powerful soaring beltings and vocal belt. I believe MC wanted to try to change it up a bit. Also if you notice a lot of artists who become big or established will eventually under sing or downplay their vocals at times or work less hard in having to prove etc since they can live off their positive great past or their name alone can do the trick or sell all on it's isn't by itself. It's hard to explain. It's like as if MC's voice sounds the same but at the same time it is not or does not sound the same if you know what I mean. Do you all get me or what I am trying to say? I think the only thing that has changed slightly is MC's image and being slightly more sexy and more outgoing and upbeat as time has progressed. Mariah can still sing outstandingly. I just want to know why she changed her vocals slightly or if it was on purpose. It just seems awkward that someone like MC who got lots of rest and had mega support and her dealings handled for her by her then husband Tommy Mottola and his and his fellow friends management team would automatically have a vocal change like that.

Mariah Carey's vocals (39,272)
by DivergentIntel from United States

This may ruffle a few feathers, but I've always been curious about what happened to Mariah Carey's voice beginning with the onset of the Butterfly era beginning 1997. I notice that Mariah Carey's background vocals and features on Babyface albums were pitch perfect and elastic and even on her protege all female singing group "Allure", MC's vocals were perfect as ever. But as soon as Honey was released and as the live performances of that era followed and after the vocal performances were not flawless or the same as pre 1997. During the Butterfly world tour she didn't have the same exact voice as in her previous world tours and live shows or appearances. Also you notice more of a whisper register and hissing in her voice and breathy vocals which was not necessarily noticeable pre August 1997. I have a feeling that MC chose to alter her vocal style slightly to rebel against her bosses and execs and the establishment on purpose. I don't think that a person's voice can automatically just change like that within a year. Slight vocal change on the Butterfly album is evident and different in vocals slightly than that displayed on her previous efforts. Don't get me wrong. Mariah always sang excellently and still has probably the best vocal talents and abilities especially given her wide +8 octave vocal range. But I'm just curious on the discrepancy and controversy over her voice. Feel free to respond and share your thoughts fellow lambs. I'm looking forward to the discussion.

Mariah and Nas have worked with each other in the past. In fact, they go way back. They did some underground remixes and unreleased material during Daydream and after as early as the mid 1990s. Much of it never got released. In 1996/1997 they co wrote and sang "Head Over Heels" which was written sung and produced as the lead single and collabratory effort for MC's record label and protege 4 member female singing group "Allure". And of course we can't forget Nas being featured on the Thank God I Found You / Make It Last Forever remake released for 1999 and 2000 during the Rainbow era.

Mariah Carey movie roles, film, acting career etc (39,247)
by DivergentIntel from United States

I've always thought Mariah Carey is a great actress and has lots of acting potential, whether it be in films, movies, cinema, broadway etc. She can do it all. Most importantly, it has been said that Mariah was meant and intended to be the lead role cast in Evita. Given Mariah's success, growing popularity, image, and personality, and style at the time, I think she would have pulled off the role successfully and even nabbed an Oscar for best actress and other awards for best songwriter etc. Given that Mariah had a Mary Poppins attitude and more on track etc, I think she would have had superb acting skills for Evita, overall. In addition, I think Glitter got a bad wrap and that outside forces were trying to sabatoge it and trying to keep Mariah and her success to remain hampered and in developmental hell. Glitter, the movie and the soundtrack were awesome, period, nuff said. I wish Mariah Carey would have released all of her unreleased tracks and songs intended for Glitter. Glitter, if thoroughly promoted, would have really taken off and propelled her to even greater heights.

All That Glitters/Glitter albums, movies, and controversies (39,246)
by DivergentIntel from United States

IMHO Glitter is one of Mariah Carey's best albums. Glitter was her last album for Sony, along with the Greatest Hits collection released in late 2001. Mariah had a gag order and legal clause for a few years that she couldn't discuss the marriage with Mottola and divorce or deep internal struggles between her and the label. Mariah got out of Sony one album early because Tommy Mottola and Jennifer Lopez used her licensed music samples for JLo's album and Mariah threatened to sue for a variety of charges and losses and damages. As a result Mariah took Glitter with her to Universal Music Group's (UMG)/Virgin Records. Glitter was a joint venture between Sony/Columbia Records and UMG/Virgin Records. Sony retained the rights to Glitter soundtrack and studio album in Japan and a few other international markets and territories and the rest was under Virgin Records. Virgin had to buy the rights and buy out the remainder of her Sony/Columbia contract. I also suspect that Mariah planned to release a Christmas album in 2000, being that she had written, produced and sang a new Christmas song that was intended to be used and go on the Grinch Christmas movie's soundtrack album. However at last minute Tommy Mottola ordered that the song couldn't go on the Grinch soundtrack because it was going on a soundtrack album thar was under another label and part of a contractual and clause and conflict which was actually found out to be a nonsensical claim. Mariah ended up having Faith Hill sing it.

I think Ariana Grande does have a nice voice. I think a lot of people compare her to MC, and they are using her style to appeal to people, but it can backfire on her. The record execs working with and backing Leona Lewis tried marketing her as the next Mariah Carey down to looks and photos and outfits and while it worked for her first two albums, it eventually backfired. People need to find their own originality. It's interesting how Mariah Carey was compared to Whitney Houston, even though Mariah was very original in her own right and did things and took things one step further by composing her very own material and songs. Mariah Carey is a legend. Others should be honored to even be compared to queen Mariah.
