The evolution of Mariah Carey (110,186)

We all like different styles of music, whether it be pop, hip hop, RnB, Soul. Mariah has covered those genres throughout her career even 1990-1995. She worked with C&C Music Factory to give her a street vibe, I loved it and the general audience loved it. The Butterfly album is a masterpiece I agree but I think the reason it didn't sell as much was purely the fact that she deviated far too quickly from what worked for her and her audience. She lost a big chunk of her core base. It didn't sell as much not because of its genre, it was purely down to what the public liked about Mariah and her style at the this time. As I said previously, I love urban Mariah otherwise I wouldn't continue to be a fan, I loved her and grew with her change in direction. Those that chose not to move with her was for their own personal music tastes and they're entitled to that. All I'm trying to get across is whilst we core fans might have stayed with her, the reason for her decline in sales is just down to the fact that more people preferred those early mixed genre days, and the sales spike for themselves. My love for Mariah and what I see as a current cognitive decline isn't me hating on her, I'm just coming from a concerned place. I appreciate your input and your views and I hope you have a nice day.

Getting uncomfortable I see. Lol. I wasn't the one who insinuated or brought it up, I just responded to his message and acknowledged he got that part, he's black too as he stated and gets it. "Butterfly" never did the numbers "Music Box" and "Daydream" did for that one fact. It is an R&B/HipHop album. Facts. But look at how highly rated that album is in contemporary music today. It is also her "Magnum Opus", she achieved her best work, being her authentic true self. I haven't "crowned" myself poison or anything negative here, as you put it, I'm not the one spitting vitriol out at Mariah here masked as "OG Love", from the OG Coven.

I absolutely love accents. I was in line at Disney when a woman with her daughter got behind me. They were from Sydney, Australia. (I named my daughter Sydney.) We chatted and I told her she had a lovely accent. I am from Southern California. The only accent I have is how So Cal peeps tend to put "the" in front of a freeway. (Ex: You take "the" 15 to "the" 210, etc.). That's not even an accent, lol. Oh well, at least we have beaches.

Can we just stick to the facts and not make this about some race war please. If you're talking music styles then yes I love urban/R&B Mariah but I wasn't talking about that. You've taken what we have been saying into your own context and twisted it into black vs white. Again shame on you. I think you've just crowned yourself the "poison" on this forum. We all love Mariah in our own way, respect people's opinions and stop being rude to people.

You get it, and I'm glad you addressed it from this angle, I just didn't want to get into it. Part of the main problem "OG's" have is Mariah's leaning towards black music and succeeding at it too - R&B/Hiphop specifically. That's why they will always have a problem with this "New Mariah", so to speak, because that Tommy version was molded to cater to a white audience. Let's call it as it is. However, that's not the real her, never really was to begin with - check "Vision of Love", that's a singer who's main and only influence is black music, gospel, R&B and hip-hop (check the debut album, isn't she rapping on "Prisoner"). What's mind boggling about these OG fans is that new Mariah (true Mariah) has now been out so to speak, much longer (all caps) than hairbangs Mariah (Music Box and Daydream) and she has pretty much remained the same since, yet they're still hooked on the curated Tommy's vision of her and think that somehow, someday she's gonna go back to pop and that image. Smh.

Every time someone on here proclaims themselves an OG, I have to take a deep breath and proceed with caution.
Mariah has stated multiple times how controlled and unhappy she was in the first several years of her career. She threw herself into her work and convinced herself this was the price she had to pay for success. Other friends like Brat even wondered "How do you live like this?" It's a little weird to see all the OG's being nostalgic for this era.
The OG's say she was a proper lady in this era - classy, dignified, pristine, graceful, and her true authentic self. They mourn her current state, which one is left to assume is the opposite of all those adjectives. I'm not here to invalidate anyone's opinion, but I can provide another perspective that Terna expressed - we both happen to be black.
In our culture Mariah is viewed as bougie and fancy. Initially we were like "Who is this white girl singing down like that? Okay Mariah, Get down with your bad self. Do your thing, girl." I don't think one culture's perspective is more important than another's, but I think we should remember to try and view the whole.
I do think Mariah would be disheartened that who she is now is causing so much sadness and heartache to the OG's. But I don't think she would go back (and no shade, but I heard the Walter song and I agree with her). I think she would sadly hand y'all the Art of Letting Go record. Go to Mimi on your contacts. Press delete. End your suffering.
If it's any consolation, the OG's can always treasure the memory of Tommy controlled Mariah, when she was being her true authentic self.

Well put Jamie, thank you. Loving your posts lately. It's always difficult when an OG goes up against a Yaas Queen because we seem to be diametrically opposed. Lucky for us though the board allows all opinions to be voiced. Whether you're an OG, Yaas Queen, or a sweet innocent lamb that sits somewhere in between. We love everyone.

Did you guys ever watch Roseanne? Does anyone remember how they switched the actresses who played Becky? It confused DJ and landed him in therapy.
I was talking with my childhood friend about how MC looks like completely different people (both beautiful) at the beginning of her career and now.
(Sidenote: of course it's expected that she would look different, everyone does with time, but since she still looks so young I don't expect her to look so different. It feels like five years instead of thirty, you know?)
She started saying "They say she's the same but she isn't the same" but we couldn't remember where it was from. So I finally remembered and looked up the episode.
We laughed so hard. It would be funny if MC did a skit like this with John Goodman. It's been so long now that probably nobody would remember this episode anymore, though. This was a highly rated show, does anyone else remember the episode where DJ says this?
Anyway, I'm going to add a link so maybe somebody else can get a good laugh too.

Aww this is a message board where people can voice their opinions. There was no negativity from any of my posts, we're not complaining as we are still supporting her by buying her music, as I said I like both TD and SS. I simply stating she is changed and how I personally would have liked her career to play out for the better, it doesn't mean I won't support her whatever she does or call her out for something I don't like. That is a true fan to me... being honest. You're the one calling people "silly fans" and "poison" and having a word censored. That isn't a nice trait. You're the one that should be ashamed of yourself, not us.

Someone needed to say it, thank you for this post. I too ain't the same person from when I started out being a fan in my teenage years, somehow they expect Mariah to remain the same. However, everything she is today, she's accomplished 35+ years in this music industry that we all know chews them up and spits them out (need I call names?) is because she's grounded in Christ first of all, and she follows her heart, that's still the same Mariah Carey I see today, it hasn't ever changed. And honestly that's what has preserved her charm, kept her relevant and intriguing 35 years later - she still has her light and gift in tact. Mariah if I'm not mistaken is the only artist who debuted in 1990 still on the charts today. What won't Whitney Houston fans give just to have one more era and album (shot vocals and all), tour from her. Something that will never happen, ever again. You silly fans here complain about the dumbest stuff, all the time. I thought Andrew was the poison here, but even as he's long gone, some new [censored] here have risen up to take his place. You should be quite ashamed of yourselves.

I'm under no illusion over 30 years has past, even Mariah who refuses to acknowledge time (for some weird reason) will know that over 30 years has past. Let me put it this way, if Mariah was to hold her public image in some kind of way that resembles the early days I believe she would have more respect now and be more popular at this point. I'm not saying she should be skipping through fields in a plaid shirt and denim shorts (however cool that was) she's not a young girl anymore. But how I do feel she should be carrying herself is just like when she sang "With you I'm born again" in 2005. There she was a grown woman but with grace, she was articulate and professional. And way more stage presence that she has today. None of us are saying to go back 30 years, would be great if we could but what I and many others are saying is when she tries too much and cheapens herself it doesn't work. Mariah at this point in her career should be like that 2005 stage performance, balanced, elegant, professional, coherent and drawing the audience in. We all love Mariah and only want the best for her and know she's capable of so much more without the whole diva pretense. Ps. I never said she wasn't still a nice person.

Hm, let's put it down like this; go back 30 years (this is for lambs who are following Mariah from day one) and try to remember yourself back then. Done? Ok. Now see yourself today. Somehow I doubt that you all are the same person. Because I am not. I was gullible, shy, very introverted, afraid to say something and just followed others. Today, I am unrecognizable. She is still a nice person and our Mariah - who gets her, gets her. Who doesn't, doesn't.

I always remember my Nana being pleased when I finally dropped being a Madonna fan in 1993 for Mariah as she didn't approve of Madonna and her dressing so inappropriately. At the time I remember thinking Mariah would never ever go that way as like you said she had such grace and a natural wholesome appeal that drew people in. Never would I imagine she would be in a convertible car in a sawn off wedding dress and garter acting provocatively in a music video. The OG's were so so lucky to have experienced that, it was life changing and such a force of nature that was unparalleled. It was completely organic and authentic.

Jamie thank you for putting so eloquently my exact thoughts. I think only the OG fans can relate to what you say, because we were there living those great moments live at the time. I don't think people get just how special she was and how she drew so many people to her by being an incredible talent, humble, and her good fortune of being naturally photogenic. Talk about hitting a jackpot. But then to see it descend year by year is so heartbreaking. Not just the voice, but the grace, the elegance, the class, the poise... sigh.
Right now you're gone, you just vanished away. But I'll never leave you behind. No, I'll never forget you.

Yes love the Joy to the World video for that reason, also love the Anytime You Need A Friend C&C remix video. The playfulness is so natural and she is so cool without even trying. She appealed from all angles back then. Now when people think of her it's for the big diva personality which has made her more unattractive to people over the years and pushed people away. But to her she thinks funny and has created this whole persona which unfortunately her career is based around as apposed to the music. She'll never be young Mariah again but at least have some dignity and humbleness to you, don't cheapen yourself for popularity. Mariah is the first to remind us she wrote her own songs at every chance she gets, but had she portrayed herself more professionally (at least in her persona) she wouldn't need to keep saying it, people would have had more respect for her, where as I think because of the image she has turned into people think she's an airhead, and she really hasn't done anything to quash that she is actually really intelligent. That's just my opinion and Mariah is free to live her life the way she chooses, but the humble Mariah we all fell in love with I'm sure wouldn't want to be like she is now. There's clearly some serious mental health issues going on as she's barely recognizably, I think the last time I remember her being fully coherent and like herself was during E=MC2 era. She was diva like but more in touch with herself and didn't appear lost and distracted. Whilst I think medication is crucial in her situation, I can't help but think she is heavily over medicated and it's causing this huge shift in her. I would love her to go on some kind of retreat where everything is stripped back, no cameras no booze no external interaction etc where she has no choice but to be at one with herself to find her true inner self again.

Jamie, Edward I absolutely feel the same about Mariah. It's good to know some longtime fans also miss the authentic, lovely Mariah. I miss the natural Mariah. "She was sexy without even trying, and that voice was just next level. That combo is what made her so special." So true, that was something beside her voice that made her so unique, so loveable and even relateable. For me this will always be the real Mariah. Of course we all change a bit with age, but most people stay indeed the same just wiser and older with luck. I do wonder what made her change so much too? Sometimes it feels like she hides the humble Mariah inside. I understand it can be a shield or something but it must be more than that. The "Joy to the world video" is one of my favourites. Not because it's so good, no story I know, but just seeing an already global superstar, having so much fun, looking so carefree, a diva but with a big heart and humour, Mariah was never more beautiful, more adorable than when she's "not trying".

The evolution of Mariah Carey (110,075)

Whilst I love that Mariah is still putting out music I can't help but wonder what went wrong for Mariah. I've just heard Without You on an Instagram post which to me is the pinnacle of Mariah in 1993, you couldn't get much better than that. To now her latest single Sugar Sweet (which I don't mind) but let's be honest she can barely sing this tune and it isn't very taxing on the voice as a were her earlier hits. When I hear old school Mariah I can't help but feel sad at where we are now. A complete transformation of personality and a huge degrading of vocals. What happened? Was it self inflicted or is it just natural wear and tear of a once untouchable voice. I would love to rewind to 1993 when her career took off internationally and just remind her to stay grounded and focus on what's important. I've said this multiple times but I just don't get how we went from Mariah to MC it's such a contrast of personalities. Her early cross over stuff was cool but as I've said countless times she took it too far and I think the partying etc took a toll on her vocals and ate away at her wholesomeness. She might say and pretend that she's always been hood but I remember those early days and there was no pretence, just a natural girl living her best life. Yes we all change but we're still recognisable, I think Mariah took it too far and now she doesn't even recognise herself. Her appearance last night on Jimmy Kimmel is a far cry from who she once was, I would love to sit 1993 Mariah down and show her 2025 Mariah. I don't even think she would relate to that.
I'm speaking from the heart and probably don't understand the ins and outs of the celebrity lifestyle and how it affects you both physically and mentally. But part of me wants to understand what went wrong and what happened to Mariah and why she's so affected now and her voice has taken such a turn. It's great she's still giving us music but vocally and especially personality she's a far cry from what she was. I don't even think Mariah knows herself anymore she's that affected. I reminisce of her dancing on the beach with "to be around you" playing out to her now barely able to focus or speak and can't but help to want to say to her it's ok to be Mariah again.

Based upon the #5 charting postion of Sugar Sweet on iTunes today and Type Dangerous still rising on the radio airplay charts, I feel Here For It All is going to do very well during the first sales week. And we still haven't received the full tracklisting with features and full writing credits. I feel some writers were deliberately left off the Apple songwriters credits list that we saw to keep their feature status a secret.

It's a catchy song, not sure it's gonna chart that well though. Her voice in the higher parts is not great and worries me if that's what they can come up with in the studio. It's a light summer feel song, imagine it with Slipping Away vocals. But it is what it is.

Well I doubt it will be the 20th number one. Astonishing that in 7 years she couldn't come up with anything even remotely different to what she's put in the last 20 years. Thumbs down. You don't know how many times I used to play and sing along to "I'll Be Loving You Long Time" in the summer of 2008. I still do some times. It's a real pity that it wasn't promoted properly. It could have been a hit. And Mimi in the video, wow.
By the way, I've always loved "I Stay in Love" as well. In fact, a dog of mine was called "Baby, I stay in love with you" (short version: "Baby") after the song because, when he was a puppy and I would sing that little part around him, he used to come to me. So that became his name, but in the singing mode. Lol. Everybody got amazed whenever I sang his name and he would appear from wherever.
