But her voice sort of catches on the "ho" syllable and you mainly hear the "ney", so understand how it can be misheard. The beauty of having a good sound set up and speakers etc. is that you notice these things. For years I thought she sang "yeah, you can have me when you want me". (Tuesday 13 April 2021; 16:53)

This article from 2000 about the book is quite telling. I guess it was better from a publicity viewpoint to be born "in the 70s", or it was an error at first which never got corrected. Patricia saying it was 1970 was going along with the fabrication. It is statistically impossible that another Mr. And Mrs. Alfred Carey from the same town in Long Island had a baby called Mariah the exact day a year earlier. (Tuesday 30 March 2021; 14:40)

Picture it: I was 10 and my brother used to religiously watch the MTV Chart Countdown every week. We had just got Sky TV and it was an absolute novelty to have more than 4 TV channels haha. I remember wandering into the living room in the summer of 1993. Sunlight was beaming through the patio windows, my brother was lying on the floor in front of the TV, head cupped in his hands, watching the TV. I had wandered in because I heard this voice. Y'all know where I'm going with this. Up until then, the only female singers I was aware of was Euro Dance acts, and Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Dreamlover was playing, and it was love at first sight. Her voice, her look, the song. That was it. I remember seeing the Dreamlover cassette single in a local record shop but didn't have the 99p (lol) to buy it. Hero then started to get aired and I was just as in love with that song. I remember then seeing Music Box in the store and I would go in after school whenever I could and just gaze at the picture and try to memorise the tracklisting. The album seemed so classy when compared to 2 Unlimited and Ace of Base lol. Without You then appeared in early 1994 and it was the cassette single was the first Mariah item I ever got. I remember loving the sepia cover and how beautiful she looked, and also being floored by Never Forget You. I saved and saved my pocket money until I had the £7.99 to buy the cassette album. At the time, my room was being redecorated, so I was in a sleeping bag in my brother's room. I remember having a little kids torch under the cover at night as I listened to the album over and over on my Walkman. I thought it was her first and only album until I saw the page in the booklet advertising her other albums. I was in Woolworths and looked at the CDs and saw Emotions and Unplugged. For my Birthday I asked for those on cassette and was delighted when I got them. I could go on for hours about my early Mariah time. Everything was such a new discovery and such a joy. It makes sense; why on earth pay for something when it's free? The Rarities would only really interest fans though I think. Caution may have sold poorly, but it charted highly in the US. You can't judge a 2020 album released at the peak of streaming against, say, Music Box where buying a physical copy was the only way to hear all the songs. Don't be too disappointed Bobby A. You've made your mind up that she's a liar and re-editing history, and nothing I say will change that. But to respond to your points and why I respectfully disagree: - Glitter was never billed as a soundtrack Not having an "OST" suffix does not mean it can't constitute as a soundtrack when the tracks on the album were used in a movie. By definition, it's a soundtrack. It was, if anything, a concept album with a deliberate 80s feel written specifically for the movie. I personally do not class it as either a soundtrack, nor a "regular" album like Daydream or Music Box. More an accompaniment to the movie, or vice versa. - Loverboy sold a lot due to discounting Mariah called it the best selling single of the year, which it was. That's a fact. If her record company discounted it to encourage sales, that's good marketing and no crime was committed. - TRL was Mariah rushing her entrance and acting insane Agree this wasn't Mariah's proudest moment at all, but her point in the memoir was that everybody on the set, including Carson, knew she would be appearing, yet they made it seem like it was unknown and unplanned. - The plates didn't slip out of her hand We can't comment on this as neither of us were there. - She did not disappear to background singing because of Celine Dion Again we do not know why she did this as we were not in her head, so we only have her account of the evening to go by. - Tommy Mottola did not "help" launch her career - he launched the whole bloody thing That is true, he did indeed mastermind her career and used his influence to get her good press and on the right shows and in the studio with great producers. However, it was off the back of his belief in her unfathomable talent as a singer and a songwriter. Tommy did not sing, nor write, any of her recordings. He was just great at managing her career (to her artistic and personal detriment). Therefore it is fair to say he did "help", as without the talent to back it up, Mariah would simply be just another Tiffany. - She is not suddenly a "black woman who is also mixed race" - she is mixed race She is mixed race yes, but if she feels a stronger connection to her black ancestry over her white, who are we to say that is wrong? Reading the memoir, her dad was strict but clearly cared deeply for her. Her cousins on her father's side protected her. Her black friends in school defended her. Is it any wonder why she leaned closer to that part of her make up over the other, when it was her mother who neglected her, and the white girls that bullied her and traumatised her? I don't know anymore than you do as to why she didn't feel comfortable doing so that evening. For all we know it could have simply been her time of month. I love Mariah a lot and feel awful about all that she went through. I don't agree with everything she says and does, both professionally and personally, but it's not really constructive to call her experiences BS when they are her experiences. Therefore, if it is real to Mariah, then I believe that she believes it to be the truth. In the grand scheme of things what some geeky remix obsessed pedantic fuddy duddy like me thinks or believes doesn't really matter, it's not my story to tell. To your point around Mariah standing still during Testimony, yes, that happened and was noticeable. But I remember also reading a story where someone was talking about Mariah being at some party. She got up to go to the dance floor and Tommy sent her back to sit alone by herself as "Mariah shouldn't and doesn't dance". The memoir shows how much the actions of others have impacted Mariah hugely, even small things (your left side is better). For all we know it could have been residual insecurities around that comment that was made about her. And let's not forget the moment in her memoir where her grandmother forced her to dance to prove she was black. We don't really know the whole picture and what was racing through her mind that night, or what insecurities she was dealing with at the time. If her voice wasn't on point, did she really want to make it worse by awkwardly dancing and having that judged by everybody as well? The memoir has certainly given me new perspectives on all her actions, and my overarching response to most criticisms now is that we should cut her some slack and forgive her missteps and not be so hard on her. She's had it hard enough already and her fans should be the last people to contribute to that. I still will not hold back around awful musical choices like Why You Mad and Infinity, as she can do much better, but to judge her as a person and her actions, put simply, it's not my place.
