Grammy, songwriting, Adam Lambert, etc (113,165)
by MusicfanJ from Germany

I know Adam Lambert and Kesha. But Big Bunny is not popular and known here. Not at all. Maybe by youngsters, but I'm a millennial so I have another taste than the charts. Do you know Jonathan Jeremiah? He's a British musician, his latest record is great. A combination with pop and soul and a bit of songwriter. He may not be so famous, but he's a great artist with a good voice. "Older" people don't know all the rappers and chart people. But everyone knows Mariah around the world. She's one of the very few real superstars that are still here. From a better time. I hope she reminds the people what a real superstar is today in Milano. I'm sure she will rock.

Grammy, songwriting, Adam Lambert, etc (113,157)

I thought Adam Lambert did a great rendition of Can't Let Go. I love how he twisted the lyrics a bit and his vocals are solid. He's one of the few who gave Mariah song justice. I also loved Teddy Swims and Kesha.
But Lambert said something on the red carpet interview. He said "Mariah is great because she knows how to write for her voice, and that's not easy" (or something to that effect), which I thought was very true, and sweet way to recognize Mariah's talents, which we all know to be true.
However, in a way that's also Mariah's weakness, because she only knows how to write for her voice, and once her voice declined, she can't capture that same songwriting sentiments. That's because she didn't try to write for other artists earlier. She should have.
Lastly, it's very telling how Mariah's fanbase don't know any of these artists. Imagine not knowing Bad Bunny who only happens to be the biggest male artist right now. Absolutely embarrassing (unless, which is what I suspect, these lambs' political affiliations to be completely opposite to Mariah's but that's another topic).
Now, do you have to know these new artists? No. But I can't trust an ignorant lamb's opinion on what Mariah should or shouldn't do in the current music landscape or anything for that matter.

Wow, finally good news I was waiting for. I love the [Olympics] and Mariah. So the combination is wonderful. I have a very good feeling for tomorrow. NII is perfect for it. I'm very excited for "Volare". Mariah and Italian another great combination. I can't wait.

Grammys (113,132)
by MusicfanJ from Germany

Yup. It [doesn't] get better anymore. Except for Lady Gaga I don't even know all the people there. Lol. I've ever heard of this "Bunny man". But I believe next year it will be even worse. The same with so many award ceremonies. They used to be good, but it's a long time ago. The last 10 years it only went down. More circus and political correctness indeed. In the 80ies and 90ies there was only a bit circus, a lot of entertaining but also artists that were real artists. The best from the best in every genre. Those were the days.

Grammys (113,131)
by Giovanni from USA
| |

It's been a while since I've paid attention to the Grammys and boy did I make a mistake tuning in. It was probably the worst Grammy awards ever. It got way too political and the performances were awful. Bad Bunny winning album of the year was the shocker of the night for me. I really thought Gaga was going to take it. And Trevor Noah my guy you have no talent.

The "neutral expression" was funny. I thought the same. I hope her music ears don't hurt from the noise. But I do believe they all did their best. A Mariah tribute is the hardest thing to do.

I couldn't agree more. The performance was such a mess (I think) that I could barely recognize the song. Mariah, who was caught on camera, appeared to be disapproving but maintained a neutral expression out of respect. Did she ever mention in an interview before that she doesn't like other artists singing her songs? I'm curious how she has dealt with that situation.

I find it funny. They tried so hard, but yes more like a better karaoke. But hey, it's Mariah. Her own songs will never sound good by others. I couldn't listen to the [My all] cover. What was that? Lol. The grunge part was cool. Charlie Puth wasn't so bad. Nice try. Kesha was really funny. Hmm I hope Mariah enjoyed though. Her speech was fantastic and sweet.

Eekkk I saw some snippets and what is this mess? Why do they always hire the wrong people to do Mariah tributes? It all sounded like they came for a Mariah karaoke night. Poor Mariah was fighting for her life not to leave haha. Also I was excited for a Charlie Puth rendition, why did he choose ISB? Of all the incredible songs Mariah has written herself he chose a song that not only wasn't an important part of her career but more importantly it wasn't written by her. I honestly feel bad that a musical titan like Mariah always ends up with these messy tributes.

She really did look straight out of 2005. I've never been a fan of the long hair but she rocks it well. I also loved the ensemble it was sexy. Mariah at 56 is still that girl. How many women can look that good at her age. She looks like she's watching her weight too cause she looks fit. Curvy but not fat. She was giving Emancipation Mariah at Billboard.

The very one thing Mariah did from the beginning was being true to herself, despite what Tommy and Sony had done for her at the beginning of her career, which helped her to establish and emerge into her true self. It's wonderful to read a summary of her achievements like this. Now, let's release the deluxe edition of "HFIA" with new songs.

"She was left with no choice, but to write songs that would heal her broken spirit inside." Yes, her songs from the start often shows it. They are very special, I just love the early lyrics. The same with "Make it happen". I'm sorry to hear you've got troubles with your co-worker today. I work in an office for administration, mobbing has happened sometimes by co-workers too. It can really poison the atmosphere and costs energy. The best thing is to ignore those idiots and false snakes or talk with the boss maybe. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not. But anyway don't let them "take away" your friendly spirit. Listen to the one and only Mariah and enjoy her music. She's really the best to cheer the mood up.

I guess a song like TGTBW helped MC heal from her traumatic childhood. I can imagine 20-year old Mariah had no one to turn to for support once she signed her contract with the corporate morgue. I am sure she couldn't talk to anyone at the label about her traumatic childhood. MC had to put that all behind her and focus on getting her career started. She was left with no choice, but to write songs that would heal her broken spirit inside. I think MC successfully healed her spirit, but she still deals with side effects of everything mountain and valley that she has had to overcome. My spirit was crushed today by a co-worker, but still I rise above her actions. I understand completely now MC why you must write your beautiful and inspirational songs.

Yes, I feel the same way. Lol. When I think of 97 for example, I'm like it was yesterday. Spooky. But you're an 80ies born kid too right? When we age, we are like wine, we only get better. Even with a little wrinkle here and there and maybe some little aches, but inside still very young. (Most of the time.) In Norway I heard there's the friluftsliv. A very heathy lifestyle. So I'm sure, there's no horror. But the time flies too fast, that's so true.

I like the [#1's] cover, very diva-like but it suits for all the number ones. I think she looks like a supermodel on it. On the [Rainbow] cover she's of course beautiful too but it was clearly another look, very playful and sexy and "bubblegum". The pic from the booklet on the inside, Mariah with the lollipop is another supermodel pic. She was still so young, so I can understand she wanted to show her sexy side. But she was always so beautiful, the pic from the [Emotions] album on the inside with the thank you's. Such a natural beauty.

Speaking about deep cuts (113,008)

I enjoyed your post very much. I think I know what you mean with "Long ago". I never heard a female singer sing so "cool" and urban like Mariah did on Long Ago. The same with Fantasy. But what I loved about Long Ago was the groove and at the same time the sad undertone. It's almost hypnotic. "Want you" is very underrated too. I love that "80ies tune" and her soft, soulful voice on it. Her music catalogue is outstanding. Mariah can sing every genre, from pop to soul/RnB, jazz, country, soft-rock, gospel, blues, maybe grunge lol. It's very rare, and almost every album sounds different. It can never get boring. I still have to discover her newest album fully. But NII and "I won't allow it" are my favourites too. "Your love" is beautiful too. Mariah is the queen of covers too.

Alone In Love (up until recently, a couple posts here have shown love to it), Sent From Up Above, If It's Over, Never Forget You, I Am Free, Long Ago, Forever, The Beautiful Ones, Crybaby, Want You, Subtle Invitation, Joy Ride, O.O.C., Ribbon, Standing O, and Faded.
These songs don't really get much love imo. Just until recently I've seen a few posts that mentioned AIL. Especially the post about it being a mature song, and I agree. The vocal even sounds mature. It's one of my favorite from her debut along with SFUA. It's mainly the production and background vocals that I love. With IIO, it always gave me timeless, soulful, real. I never could decide on which version is the best, the original, the grammys or snl. They're all great. I wish the whistle was clearer on the grammys version. NFY was probably my favorite song on MB. It was actually the extended remix. So underrated. It's One Sweet Day's little sister. IAF is vocal masterpiece, lead and background. The writing is almost foreshadowing. Wasn't it written before she was actually "free"? Long Ago along with IAF, are my 2 favorites off Daydream. Long Ago was so hip hop to me back then in the late 1900 and 90s lol I remember while wearing headphones, discovering a vocal part at the end where she's using her tongue to make the sound and it blew my mind but no one else could hear what I was hearing lol. Forever is so classic sounding, it almost gives soft Hawaiian vibes and idk why younger me always pictured Elvis Presley in a black and white movie in Hawaii wearing a flower lei lol. The climax on that song is so good. TBO is so euphoric to my ears, from both Sisqo/Dru Hill and MC. Omg the vocal harmonies, it's like it was like the original but completely a whole different song. Love both versions but MCs surpasses the og. Once Again the climax, Crybaby had me in high-school sing-crying "why is it 5am and I'm still up spiraling. I don't get no sleep, I'm up all week", after a breakup lol. Want You, to me, is almost the epitome of an 80s r&b/pop song. The whole production and lyrical style could've easily been on the radio in the 80s. Such a great song. Subtle Invitation should've been a single. It's never mentioned when speaking about writing. Her pen was on point considering times were changing and r&b was heading towards a more explicit tone. Oh Joyride, I love you so much. You truly take me through that roller-coaster ride. And that ending, wow. Wish that voice was still here, but the song is, so I'm good. OOC is so fun and free. I wish she'd do more song like this. It's the little sister to both I Won't Allow It and You Don't Know What To Do. Ribbon is great but my favorite version is the remix with Dream and Ludacris. It's so sexy and her vocals were fire during this era. Standing O was good as well and should've been a single but I believe she had legal issues with this song. It was the only one that didn't get a remix treatment for Angels Advocate album. Faded is my favorite off MIAM, my least favorite album. I listen to a few tracks off of it but don't care for the vocal tuning and metalic sound on her. Faded was the most natural sounding song on there and I absolutely love the whistle note on it. I didn't mention any songs from Caution because I do see a lot of love for the majority of the songs on it. HFIA is new, so we still need some time to let it marinate lol. Although I feel I Won't Allow It should eventually be a single with video. Anyways, hope yall enjoyed my rant lol and hope everyone is blessed for this new year and the other new year some celebrate

Yes, I also think it wasn't needed. She was sexy and carefree with Butterfly but the cover from Rainbow is not so good. Of course it was the "bubblegum pop time" in 99 but I never liked the look from the cover. The look from the "Against all odds" video was beautiful and the many live performances around the world were mostly classy and pretty.

100% agree. I've never understood the need to "bare it all". I think in Mariah's case, she had been controlled in all aspects of her life for so many years, she swung the pendulum too far the other way once she left TM. I get why she was trying to make a statement. I just don't understand the need to go about it the way she did.

"When I listen to the album, it feels like Mariah's most 'adult' album despite it coming so early in her career." I absolutely agree. The album always seemed so grown-up and classy. I love that. It's still one of her best records. Always in the shadow from Music Box, but such an outstanding work by such a young Mariah, which makes it even more considerable. The melodies and lyrics, pure poetic art.

I think "Emotions" could definitely be considered a deep cuts album. It was a lot less successful than the debut, and people tend to forget about it. It also represents a unique period in Mariah's career (1991-93) - a period of greater creative control *before* the marriage to Tommy, the development of her working relationship with David Cole, great vocals, her image was simple and mature. When I listen to the album, it feels like Mariah's most "adult" album despite it coming so early in her career.

I love it too, production is good and so 2009/2010. My only complain is that it's way too short. It's more of an interlude than a song. Kind of sucks because it's good. Mariah needs to start making all her songs at least over 3:30 minutes, come on Mimi.

Great news (112,924)
by Lambi from USA

Last October, I stopped by Gamma Headquarters in LA in search of work and was fortunate enough to make a somewhat direct link towards Mariah's team. Long story short, I've recently been brought on in a new capacity. Of course, for contractual reasons, I'm not able to share in-depth behind the scenes. What I can say is that I'll now be part of a new, real-life Mariah community, which likely means stepping away from this board, not for good but at least for a very long while.
It's truly been a wonderful experience here. Dove, Giovanni, Mimi L, MusicFanJ, Terna, Lainsky, Randy, Joachim, Lara, Rashidi, and TJ, I've loved reading your stories, ideas, and reviews. I'm hopeful I'll continue to work my way closer to MC, and I'll absolutely try to relay your ideas and perspectives.
Thank you to MCArchives for all the festivity and warmth during my short time here. God bless, and I'm so grateful to have shared my love for Mariah with all of you. I wish you all nothing but the very best, darlings.

In Your Feelings and "stuff" (112,927)

I find that pretty interesting what the native speakers say about the topic. Why the word stuff is bleeped out? I thought it's a "normal", harmless word. It's like a school lesson for me here. I also didn't know that purple is not only a colour (it's like that). Lol.

In Your Feelings and "stuff" (112,925)

I get what you're saying but tbh that wouldn't make any sense. The line is "Sweet tender love, you said you promise, now I feel stupid and stuff", that other 4 letter word wouldn't rhyme nor really fit. Not unless she's saying "stupid and stuck", which still wouldn't be explicit. I'm really curious to know why the radio version has it bleeped out. I did also notice some wrong lyrics on some of the new songs on the album.

Was Celine the original JLo? (112,879)

I always liked Celine too. A smart, funny woman. Her music is pop and a bit of chanson but on a level which is really rare. She belongs to the "voice trinity" with Mariah and Whitney. J.Lo is so far away from it. She was never more than an entertainer/dancer. I don't know why Tommy helped her instead of another singer. Thalia at least seemed friendly and nice. Personally I can't stand J.Lo.

I really would like to know Tommy's thought process when he thought JLo could be the new Mariah? The woman doesn't write, nor does she sing (won't even get into her range, she can't sing point blank), doesn't produce. She's basically an entertainer with a pretty face. If you're going to try to replace a once in a lifetime phenomenon like Mariah, you need to put your money where your mouth is and match her skill for skill. I always found it sad that Mariah dissed Céline so much. Céline is so sweet and always has nice things to say about others.

Okay. Hmm I just never compared it with Titanic. More like an art video. I'll have to think about it. For me it's just a beautiful black and white video. But I still can't imagine Mariah staying on the Titanic like Céline and singing MHWGO.

Titanic-themed doesn't mean a shot-for-shot remake. The overturned boat in the middle of the vast ocean, that she's singing on, is the clearest Titanic reference, it's the aftermath of the sinking. Funny you said all that but completely missed the most obvious visual cue.

Probably "My All" was the theme song for a high-budget epic movie that the Evil King personally shelved the moment Mariah freed herself from the castle. Nothing is impossible... at all (unnecessary sustained high note here).
