I looks like Mariah is beating Doja, which was not on my 2025 bingo card. Keep streaming. I think Mariah can do 70k if we keep this up. I'm gagged. These are great numbers of Mimi.

HFIA (111,625)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
I've been addicted to the album. There is no skip to this album. HFIA is perfect, I can see why it's the album title. It's 6 and a half minutes yet it still feels short. The first 30 minutes of the song is a masterpiece, the cry in Mariah's voice it sounds like no one. Another great addition to Mariah's discography. I think this album will eventually outlast Caution.

An ode to all of us (111,563)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
My reading is a bit different. I mean she literally just signed a multi-album deal with gamma. I definitely think she's signaling a shift in what she wants to put out moving forward. It's not by chance that there's no rap collab in HFIA. That's a first for her in what, since prior Daydream? The collabs we got leaned more R&B and another with gospel. That's a good thing, I hope she keeps collabing across the board. It's not by chance that her intro is "Mi", from now on, it's gonna be her and about her. It's not but chance that she collabed with The Clark Sisters, gospel yet upbeat. It's not by chance that she covered a McCartney song. I think that's the direction she wants to take, more pared down, classic and timeless.

An ode to all of us (111,556)
by BFF from United States
| |
|
|
I'm not sure it's a farewell, but something has definitely been going on behind the scenes. You can tell in every interview and every performance she's given during the past year or so that she's completely and utterly exhausted. I'm happy that she put out this album, and I think it's great. But Mariah really looks like she's going through the motions and that her heart is not in it any more... at least the performing part of it. I think she still likes writing songs and recording, but I think the other aspects of being a recording artist are unsatisfying to her.

HFIA (111,560)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
I hear more like a tribute to lambs and that she's here for it all til the end. I think she wrote this during her struggles with losing her family at the same time. For a while I thought it's about the twins, and she's gonna be there until the end, now that it's just them.
But I always thought that Mariah thinks of Lambs are fam. So ultimately the lyrics is about that, her career and her parasocial bond with lambs, virtual sleepovers. That she's here for it all, even if you abandon her.
Red carpets in Cannes and applause But if you leave (when lambs no longer want her), Still baby, I'm here for it all.
But it would be preposterous to sing to your fans. So it's intentionally ambiguous for everyone to relate wherever they want to place that thought. The second half shift is a literal shift. I think she's going to move from pop to gospel and classic standards maybe which is how the entire album sounds. If you notice, there's not a single rap feature in the album. It's a tribute and once she shifts, she is saying that she hope you'll still be there.

HFIA (111,537)
by Munny from United Kingdom

This most definitely is a farewell album. HFIA is a musical mash-up of every introspective album closer she's ever done. Melodically, it's three-parts Music Box, Looking In and The Wind. Very telling that it closes the album. Her way of saying goodbye.

My Love (111,516)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
I loved it. One of the best tracks. I wish she partnered with a movie or series to attach the song. It's a beautiful rendition.
@Randy, My Love, she (or he in the case of McCartney) was talking about both, because that's what he calls his wife Linda, that's why he called the song that to carry that double sense throughout the song. And that's pretty much Beatles right then, redundant and simple, Let It Be, All You Need Is Love, etc.
Maybe that's the direction Mariah wants to take in her next chapter, simple and leaning more towards the feeling of it.

Also... this cover of "My Love" by Paul McCartney and Wings is really good. I had been thinking about buying a compilation of McCartney's post-Beatles work, and this is definitely the push that I needed. I really love his song "Young Boy" from the album "Flaming Pie". I know this is a tangent, but I always preferred Paul to John Lennon. Far less pretentious and just thought his solo stuff was way better than John's.

Wow this album really took me by surprise, if that was possible because I really avoided the snippets. The last 4 songs I Won't Allow It, My Love, Jesus I Do, HFIA is so compact emotionally, they really tugs the heart. In Your Feelings and Nothing is Impossible is one long timeless feels. By 3rd, 4th listen, I'm already obsessed.

Well the question was favorite "music video", not song, so it's a little less embarrassing. But yes still embarrassing nonetheless. They probably want to say AIWFC but don't want to disrespect her. But it's not easy to be put on the spot. It reminds me of Madonna praising Taylor on the red carpet, and when asked her favorite Taylor Swift song, she can't name one.

by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

KATSEYE was asked at the VMAs red carpet about their favorite Mariah song and none of them could name 1 song. Just 1 girl was like (My All) and the rest were like so confused and one girl asked the girl who named the song to give her a title as well. Now I don't know this group well, but apparently they're popular but for them not to know a single song by the legend that is Mariah Carey is insane. Like I don't expect them to know her full catalogue but if nothing else at least say AIWFCIY. And there are so many viral Mariah songs on TikTok. Also you're on a red carpet where she's winning a major award, you should have been more prepared to answer that question.

So... thoughts on the VMA performance? (111,072)
by jaker20 from US

It seems like new pre-recorded vocals, and I like that. At least she's putting some new effort on new vocals. But she's still got a lot to improve on her lipping. Celine is a great lipper, for many years people thought she's always singing live. The same with Beyonce, but it's easier for her to lip because she's dancing a lot.

The ratings had a major surge this year. Overall it was a great show for her, she looked great, the timing of the Vanguard is right, she won an award, the new pop girls at the red carpet are praising her, the buzz is there, her greatest hits album went back on iTunes which is a very good indication.
I'm getting a sense that maybe HFIA is going to surprise.

Superbowl Mariah (110,923)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
I think Mariah would do great in it. Superbowl is about presentation, and the sets, and the overall show. Mariah's sets in Brazil looked amazing and they compliment her music so well, and as mentioned, she has so many classics. She has so many hits, creative directors can make a lot of magic with them.
Mariah won't be hanging upside down from the ceiling or riding some aerial rig animal ride that many artists are doing now, which apparently is becoming associated with Superbowl. No, no. I find that to be just so silly.
How about her bringing it to church. I can imagine her in this big set with a full giant choir doing something like Fly Like a Bird, and then followed by I Want To Know What Love Is, as she walks into the middle of the arena which shows a giant butterfly, just like in the video, and followed by a set of dramatic high tech drones as she walks into the center of it. Amazing.
I've seen an artist on YouTube from China doing this and it looks amazing, and all she's doing is walk and these drones were following her as she sings this ballad. Though I admit she lips better than Mariah. But audiences will be wrapped up with her classic hits and the beauty of the presentation and people won't care.
There are so many creative ways for it to be big without it being a circus, and still true to her music.

Superbowl Mariah (110,888)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
I know for a fact she can absolutely crush a superbowl performance. This is a woman that has hits for days (every single soul remembers and would love to sing along to), that can make a playlist hours of non stop bops, without repeating a song twice and she doesn't even need to sing the whole songs. And then there's the features with several artists that I know for a fact would honor her invitation. Don't underestimate her now? The Superbowl performance is for like maybe 15 minutes maximum, and Mariah has more than enough hits both past and present to cover that. Think of it for a second, all her massive hits and then suddenly, she announces "I just gotta bring Christmas back one more time". Haha. And then AIWFCIY closes with an absolutely explosive fest of cheer and confetti.

Random thought (110,896)
by jaker20 from US
| |

Yeah the people she collabs with defines the music, they will sound like it is from that era. Collab with Walter for example will sound like 90s diva vocals, JD etc would sound Emancipation era, and so forth. Their works are so recognizable from different eras, aka, dated. Is there hunger for that sound?
If she collab with younger producers, they can still be ballads, but more current and lyrical. And with the state of her voice, that's probably a good direction. For example, she would totally sound gorgeous with Finneas' Break My Heart Again or something similar.

MC the GOAT (110,809)

They are different. Butterfly is more artistic, and Daydream is very commercial and in the moment. Art and commerce don't have the same criteria in comparison. They're just different.
Personally I listen to them depending on my mood. If I'm home and contemplating, I listen to Butterfly. If I'm in the park or doing my groceries, I listen to Daydream.

I honestly think that "Butterfly" is superior to "Daydream" as an artistic effort. I wish "Butterfly" had been recognized at the 1998 Grammys in the categories where she was nominated. The songwriting and production are just better than on "Daydream" and she approached the vocals with more restraint. Rich Juzwiak's review of the album for Slant Magazine really encapsulates why "Butterfly" is her best album. The hip-hop elements were incorporated in a very classy manner and were not overdone like they were for some songs on "Rainbow" and "Glitter."
I think "One Sweet Day" deserved to win something, but Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" was also a really great song from that year. It was a little strange to award Best Pop Album to "Turbulent Indigo" by Joni Mitchell - I have that album and it is not one of Joni Mitchell's best. She lost best female pop vocal performance to Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's", which is kind of silly too. "Fantasy" is definitely a better record than that one. She lost best female R&B vocal performance to Anita Baker and Album of the Year to Alanis Morissette. There was a lot of competition for Mariah from all directions, but I do agree she should have won something considering she was nominated for so many and considering how successful the album was.
Maybe she would have won some awards at the 1996 Grammys if "Daydream" had been released a little earlier in 1995? "One Sweet Day" and "Always Be My Baby" did not really catch on as hits until 1996, so they may not have had enough exposure by the time of the award ceremony.

"Mirage" (110,786)
by jaker20 from US

Many attribute Mariah's comeback to TEOM era, so they are constantly looking for that WBT to repeat. Because it's really Charmbracelet and I Know What You Want, before the TEOM era, that got her out of the Glitter funk. It's not a big success but I don't think TEOM would have happened without it.
So I think it's going to take a couple of tries for Mariah to have a big comeback again, if it's ever going to happen, maybe it's too late, who knows. But it is the Mariah situation. People don't know her anymore other than as a Christmas lady.
Cher's Believe didn't happen suddenly either. Heart of Stone, Love Hurts paved the way.
Right now, I just want this album to be good, and to keep making good music.

Unexpected allies (110,785)
by jaker20 from US

Sure that sounds just like a sweet sweet fantasy baby, when I close my eyes, and everybody loves each other.
That's also not real. I can be sanctimonious and say, well not me, but it's a nasty industry full of fake and backstabbing people thrives, and fans are just as bad.
Mariah and Madonna fans have been going at each other since the 90s. That kind of died down a bit, but it's still there there.
On social media, biggest Mariah haters are either Madonna or JLo fans. But during the last few years, Swifties are going up the ladder. JLo fans is understandable considering the history.
But there's the love for music. And there's also the success claims, and shooting for the standard and that's Mariah. And if you don't see it then congrats I guess.

Unexpected allies (110,758)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End

|
|
Lambs were never jealous of Madonna's success anymore than we were jealous of Whitney's, Janet's, Celine's, Shaniah's, Toni's, Britney's, X-Tina's, Taylor's or even Ariana's success. I rebuke it. I have bought at least 5 of the aforementioned artists albums at the height of their popularities all while being a Lamb 200%. I have an overall great taste in music. I don't discriminate. What moves me moves me. It's not a premeditated decision. I'm hoping most people are still like this but maybe not. Oh, well.
Jealousy is a bitch we might have heard of and seen in passing but in the end - we just don't know her. The only difference between now and then ("back in the day") is that everything wasn't so precious all the freaking time. When JLo and Tommy stole from Mariah, we heard about it in real time from multiple sources, including Mariah herself and receipts were shared.
The same stuff happens these days but it's a whole different ballgame. The gatekeeping is strong af. There's an oligarchy of sorts that's been dominating The Anglo-Music World for 2 decades and it's straight politics. Really, the whole entertainment game is just one long political campaign.
Mariah's not a schmoozer, never was and never will be. That's to her credit. Taylor Swift is very much a publicist's dream client. No need to elaborate. Unexpected allies, ey?
As Mariah Carey famously coined in the 90's (and Celine borrowing her quote verbatim): "There's room for everybody," when asked what she thought of other female A-list artists. This has since evolved into - We Love Everybody.
These things make me happy.

I doubt it. I think Swifties in general have been nasty towards Mariah over the last few years. I think they are jealous of Mariah's legendary career in the same way that lambs used to be jealous of Madonna's legendary career. I don't think Taylor Swift deciding to release her album a week after Mariah's was by chance. She intended to do that. She's trying to show how big her current career is in relation to another legend, albeit someone past her prime.
But Mariah will come back in the holidays like she does every year.

The video for H.A.T.E.U. is also shockingly bad. I was even more chocked to find out that Bret Ratner directed it who directed her more iconic videos. The bathing suit is so unflattering, I can’t believe she let them put her in it. There is no way she selected it. But again, looking low-budget for a high caliber director.
It bothered me so much, because I absolutely love love the song. This happened a lot in the 2010s, solid songs wasted by bad videos. #Beautiful is another one.

Mariah's best videos (110,697)

I love Up Out My Face video, it's cute and it has a good concept. I wish Mariah had done more conceptual videos in her career. I would say it's one of Mariah's last videos that I like. After that, a lot of her videos are so random with very little to no concept. Her videos in the 2010s have not been really good and badly produced and low budget, up until A No No, which I really like.

Oh gosh I didn't know Nick directed that. Well good job because I love every shot. I know he gets hate for the "Up out of my face" video because people say it looks like an ad for Target but I really enjoyed that video too. Matches the playful nature of the song.
