Mariah Carey in the UK (104,559) by Andrew from the UK Having taken off with I'll Be There, not until the Memoirs era did Mariah drop from being a pretty steady Top 10 artist. There were certainly some blips along the way, most notably releasing Butterfly as a single but Mariah for many many years was a mainstream radio listed artist. However, I'd agree that she became the source of much derision after she took her clothes off in 1997. Nobody wanted it from her. This emerging vanity aspect of her personality was quite off-putting to British people. The Heartbreaker Remix and Loverboy videos did maximum damage to her profile as did the expanding breasts which started ignoring each other sometime around 1998 into 1999. It does all strike me as possibly a little bit unfair. Women - and girls, even - were treated very differently back then, such were the times that they would often be asked about their breasts in interviews. There is a video on YouTube of it happening to Britney when she was about 17 years old and it is uncomfortable viewing. But with Mariah I believe she was very respected as a top-tier vocalist and she was, at the very essence of her being, a solid-bet of a hitmaker - the "Songbird Supreme", no less. That she had achieved this through sheer talent won her many fans who became confused at her need to add sex and sexuality to her career. It smacked of desperation and she was somewhat "slut-shamed". I cannot help but often wonder what Mariah's career would be like if it was taking off in this day and age. Almost certainly she would not have endured the ridicule for having a mental health crisis but, rather, I would hope she would be, or have been, treated a lot more sympathetically. Regardless of whataboutery, the success of her singles and her popularity whenever she visited the UK cannot be diminished and it serves to emphasise that if she has the right material and promotion she will be successful. Unfortunately, in terms of both, she has had neither for well over a decade now. The Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour needs to hit the road again. N.b. Sorry for the essay, J-L, but I do suffer from insomnia. I gotta get me some sleep. Also, check out the chart-placing of "Obsessed", I don't recall it underperforming like that. Much of the UK don't understand or relate to her post Butterfly. I personally didn't relate to Mariah until Charmbraclet (I was in grade 11 at the time). I remember Mariah being the hottest artist in my grade 9 year (from a Canadian perspective), which was Heartbreaker era. Before that she was "Mom's music". Then when I went to uni, everyone was obsessed with TEOM album, and then during the E=MC2 era every queer club in the country was blasting Mimi. Personally, I think Mariah's song is way better. Hopefully RATCT won't stay at #1 too long. There are other more deserving holiday songs. I would love to see Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run", Charles Brown's "Please Come Home for Christmas", or Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" hit number one. Brenda airplay is already decreasing while Mariah's keep going up. AIWFCIY will definitely be number one by Christmas day. Brenda's numbers will deflate faster after Christmas. Well, Ariana and Mariah's voice blends a bit, but JHud, bless her, doesn't. So got me thinking: who should Mariah collab next? How about Darelene Love or Brenda Lee, in the form of mashup. It's not like Mariah, Ariana and JHud all showed up on the studio. I actually really really like Mariah's live duet with Michael Buble. I thought their voices blend so very well together. Vocals getting better (104,444) by Bobby A from United States I really feel today that MC's voice was going to deteriorate anyway as she got older because of her vocal nodules. It seems now that we are always going to be in a period of her good vocals and the next year with her having bad vocals. With each album since TEOM her vocals declined some period of time between albums during live events. Also, I want to go on the record and say that her vocals during The Angels Advocate Tour were out of this world. I saw MC in Atlanta and I was blown away with high notes she was hitting that night. How absurd. Imagine going to see a West End musical and the talent missing notes because they didn't rehearse. Mariah's vocal deterioration is of her own making and people like Jamie-Luke get grief for not wanting to hand their hard-earned cash over to her for sub-par performances. Bleak, indeed. Rockin' Around #1 (104,416) by Shezz from Pk Robert Anthony you called this weeks ago. There still are a few more weeks for her to get to number 1, I hope she gets one week atleast. Though you said you thought she won't hit number 1 this year. Maybe she'll hit number 1 on the chart for the first week of 2024 which will keep her streak going. I remember it was a really tight race last year as well and RATCT was also number 1 on Spotify last year but more towards the end. I don't think any amount of promotion at this point will make people stream or buy this song more than they already do. I don't think Mariah has anything left to accomplish with AIWFC - most of us were hoping it would help her get her longest running number 1 title back. It still can, might just take longer now. I think some people are generally getting a little tired of AIWFC (as per comments seen online). Heck even I tend to skip it on my Christmas playlist now sometimes - but whenever it does come on it still sounds pretty darn good I'll admit. Lets celebrate her reaching number 1 on the global Billboard and Spotify charts and looking great in the People shoot. She says she has enough songs for an album now needs to record some of them so maybe a new album in spring. Also, I read online that Butterfly Lounge is Mariah's foray into Jazz. Most people have their own playlists anyway, and Spotify is not the only streaming platform. Brenda wasn't at the top of some of those playlists before. Was she being boycotted since AIWFCIY hit number one? I thought we had moved on from the paranoia lambs tend to have about some mega powerful entity coming for Mariah. AIWFIY and RATCT are the Christmas hits they are because millions of people love them and got them there. You can discount, you can gift, you can pray, you can throw a lambtrum, but all that won't make a song popular or hit if people don't like it. (Monday 4 December 2023; 15:55)
