When the "demo tape incident" happened at the party Brenda K Starr took her to, MC was already in negotiations with WB. I've no idea what numbers each party threw in, but all Mariah ever said about it was that it was CBS allowing her to write her own songs that sealed it for her. I think they could have even offered less money and she still would have gone with them on that element alone. Clive Davis actually tried to buy the song Someday for Whitney, it was then that Mariah realised she could indeed write a good pop song and rather than selling it (as tempting as it was for a young girl "without a penny to her name") she retained it for herself and it gave her even more determination to become an artist in her own right. The fact that Madonna, also signed to WB, was allowed to co-write while Mariah wasn't initially given that same allowance is absurd, almost blasphemous. I recall reading or hearing that Mariah's signing came down to a bidding war: Warner reportedly offered around $100K, and Sony countered with $300K, ultimately securing the deal. Always Be My Baby (109,699) by Bill from the UK I was listening to Heart 90s today whilst driving home with the hood down and the hot sun beaming down on my shoulders. The DJ announced "a great song from Mariah Carey after the break" and inwardly rolled my eyes at the thought of Hero coming on the radio. Imagine my surprise when the strumming guitar of Always Be My Baby came on instead. Instantly I was transported back to 1996 when that song last received radio play here in the UK. I don't know what exactly the radio does to make a song sound so much brighter and better, but it sounded so good. I remember loving the cover of the CD single and the remixes too. What did strike me though was that the lyrics have a new meaning now. Mariah and I were as one for a moment in time. I genuinely did think she'd always be mine. The "new Mariah" came to take her place, but the separation and divorce was fabricated to present the new image and sound to detract from the fact the new Mariah's vocals were not up to the OG Mariah's. All the songs that were sung well (mainly ballads on Butterfly) were actually half finished left over songs the original Mariah had recorded but not yet released. But a pretty ordinary old soul at heart, just making up the diva persona to try to be interesting because at her heart she's a grounded, traditional, old school, values-driven, every day Long Island girl. - At the time, Tommy and Walter were the best darn things that she could ever imagine would (or that did) happen to her life and career. You'll notice you've made a bit of a fool of yourself as I didn't say I could, although I can sing "the way, hey" from Hero without needing backing tracks, backing singers, auto cues, lip syncing, lighting, and an army of men to navigate me across the stage. I'd direct you to this really good platform called YouTube. From there, type in the search box "Mariah Carey cover/karaoke" or words to that effect. You'll be presented with an almost inexhaustible list of unprofessional singers, amateurs, and hobbyists who can carry the tune of Hero just as well as Mariah did back in 1993. Mariah *was* one of the greatest vocalists of a generation, but sadly isn't any longer. How or why that happened will only ever be speculation because she herself will not come clean about what happened to her voice, and continues this masquerade of being this phenomenally good singer when she simply isn't any more. If you genuinely can't see that, then you are just another delusional yass queen who has no place in the fandom, as you're part of the problem as much as she is, for continuing on the facade. Three, it's really more about Mariah being able to have a special moment with another late diva, Barbra. Aretha already passed and she never got to record anything in the studio with MC. And I do think it's genius how he interchanged them throughout the verses. I am a Mariah Carey fan and what's most important to me is a lyric. Then the vocal. Then the arrangement. The lyrics are both banal and generic. It's not a song that needed to be written. It's been written before. I feel as though this is one of the songs sung before a Super Bowl national anthem with young girls from around the world tryna count steps with lame choreography. It belongs at the end of a really bad movie where the credits are more entertaining than the plot. My favorite person on this board woke me up out my sleep with a text for this? So she moved and walked unaided, has finally axed that annoying "stick finger in ear and waggle head" theatric when lipping a high note, engaged with the crowd (how sweet was little Sophia), seemed present, didn't go on about the lighting, was confident, and actually gave the type of performance you'd expect from Mariah Carey. To think a few weeks back she looked like she was about to drop down dead and now here she is like she walked out of 2008. What a turnaround. Why is Mariah name dropping designer labels in her songs at this point in her career. To me, this is immature and lazy song writing. I hope the rest of MC16 gives us lyrics with more substance.There is no way Mariah can perform this song live, we all know she struggles with breath control and these lyrics are delivered too quickly for Mariah to perform live. When he stepped away for a while, a lot of us genuinely missed him. A bunch of us have been here for over a decade. We've supported Mariah through her ups and downs, bought the music, defended her when it counted, and yes, we've also kept it real when needed. We've seen plenty of people come and go, showing up with loud opinions and disappearing just as fast. Some may not like what Bill said, but no one here gets to question his or anyone else's place fandom. If for some of you the idea of being a fan means clapping for everything and pretending everything's perfect all the time, that's not what this board is about. And if hearing a different opinion is too much for you, you might want to grab a helmet, it's 2025. I've said it before: one of the reasons this board has lasted over 20 years is because it's always allowed for different opinions. Not just blind praise, but real talk too. That's what keeps it interesting. Every time this place turns into an echo chamber, it just dies out. And yeah, sometimes we get frustrated and show a little tough love. But that's only because we know what Mariah is capable of. That doesn't mean we don't love her or support her any less. I actually appreciate reading different opinions, even ones I don't agree with. That back and forth is what makes this board work. It's not a fan club where everyone's forced to say the same thing. Let's unpack it all: 1. From Butterfly references to alcohol and drinking became more prominent in her lyrics. 2. Alcohol is known as one of the absolute worst things for a singing voice. Mariah's voice being damaged beyond repair (to the point that a number of us unprofessionals on this board can probably sing Hero better than she can and with no lipping) suggests she has indulged too much in this vice. 3. Alcoholism can be inherited and she has stated that her mother suffered from this disease. 4. She has been taking medication for her bipolar since Glitter. Also since then, we have seen her on many, many occasions drinking flamboyantly and recreationally, which you should not do when taking medication. This may cause her somewhat disassociated persona of recent years. 5. She cannot walk on stage without assistance. 6. Her speech can be slurred, rambling, and nonsensical at times. 7. It was most evident during the Nightmare era. I don't think there's a picture available from that time of her not holding a glass of champagne. As I've said previously I do wish she would come clean about what she is battling. Be it alcoholism, drug dependency, a debilitating disease etc. She is clearly not right. I hate that the Yass Queens just brush it all aside. I've loved Mariah since the moment I saw her. I sometimes think I'm the only person that cares about her in this way. I don't care about number ones, sales, her being the "queen of shade", or her damn lighting. All I care about is her and her being healthy, and happy. And she is not. I know she likes a drink but never looked at it this way before. It would make sense that this is her vice and what's damaged her vocals. When I think of younger Mariah, she was so much more happier, even though she says she wasn't. You can see it on her face and hear it in both her speaking and singing voice. I just listened to Daydream from Tokyo Dome, I love when she says "thank you guys" to the fabulous four and saying "they are having church up in here" at the end of Hero. She sounds so humble and sweet, and just generally happier, a complete contrast to her personality now. I think Mariah wanted to change herself because she didn't want to be this sweet and grounded person she wanted to be more edgy, which I get, hey we would all like to be different at times but I honestly believe that's who she really is deep down and wanting to change has only led to more problems for her down the line. It's like Tommy said no one was forcing her to write those songs or be the person she was. I believe when you loose sight of who you really are and portray a different image it can only do harm to yourself. Most sight Butterfly as when he voice began to decline and change, but for me Daydream was the beginning of the end. It was just masked by good songs, good production, and confidence on the stage when performing. Main call-outs for you all to review is that her melisma became disjointed, most noticeable on songs like I Am Free. She breaks it up rather than just singing straight through the melody like she did on all her albums beforehand. Then all the body from her voice went too, best displayed by When I Saw You and Long Ago. She still sounds great but there was a very noticeable shift at this point.
