I have it down in my Mariah book one time each in the MIAM era and the early part of the Caution era when GTFO and With You were released.

You messing with Daydream? (103,050)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
Right To Dream is one of my favorite MC songs that never did anything commercially, but it is probably one her best written songs post Glitter era. I really think Willie Nelson really helped MC write a gem. I wish that she would take more chances with other singer/songwriters and not just for a special project or movie. By the way Glitter and TEOM are #3 and #4 for magnum opus.

You messing with Daydream? (103,049)
by Randy from USA

Ahem. Butterfly is her magnum opus. Daydream is second. But I would never slam Daydream. It was the first CD I owned by her. Everything before that was cassette. And about banning Andrew. Isn't that request getting old. Kinda like me talking about 1997, Right to Dream and the 2006 Grammy cut and paste job. We are a dysfunctional family. All of us are needed. Terna gets on my last nerve and I would never want him banned or to stop posting. We love everybody.

No controversial song or video (103,040)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
MC is one of few artists who has never had a controversial song or video. The Obsessed video and song probably would come close to being controversial because she didn't know how Eninem would react to her comedic portrayal of him in the video and the shade lyrics about him. However, she has had many single releases that received a negative promotional plan or very low radio airplay. Can't Take That Away and H.A.T.E.U are on the top of the list for this category.

I think that David was offended by your GTFO lyric, "Why don't you get the." Interpretation is vague and difficult to know what you were trying to say to Randy. I am sure Randy understood. Be nice to me Andrew. Lol. You and I go way back and our board relationship was very contentious from 2013-2020.

David: Randy is my friend outside of this board. He will understand the humour as will others, like Eddie, for example. I am sorry you do not. Alas, you do remind me that one can't say boo to a goose 'round here for fear that someone so precious starts screaming "hate" and why I did not miss it. Talking of being an unreliable witnesss: I have not posted on this board in two years. Two years. If every two years is how often you visit the board, you have quite some entitlement to demand how it is run. In the interest of harmony, I offer you my sincerest of apologies for having triggered you.

MC should come clean (103,021)
by Bobby A from United States
| |

Really? If you go to the Epic website and scroll through their artist roster names, MC's name is not there. Legacy Recordings exist to manage the archive recordings of artists who released recordings under Sony and its subsidiaries. The Rarities album was released under Columbia/Legacy.

So, we're just making things up now? Mariah hasn't been dropped. Epic is just another branch of Sony, Mariah's under Legacy for older artists. They're not going to get rid of her, she makes too much money every Christmas along with her back catalog. She has a 3 album deal and has only delivered 1. If they dropped her, they'd have to pay for that. Which didn't work out well for Virgin. She delivered different compilations with new music in 2019 and 2020. She can release an album when she wants to, but there's no rush in such a climate. She just finished producing a Broadway show and was discussing making her memoir movie. She's doing a lot behind the scenes. Her deal doesn't include touring, she has a specific deal with Live Nation. The way you all rip her vocals apart no matter what she does just doesn't surprise me, she's not rushing to release new material. Madonna's deal is done, not sure why she was brought up in this convo at all, did she even get a new one?

I knew something was up when her previous MIAM era bodyguard was back protecting her. It would have to be somebody who has children already and not in the music industry. I am pretty Tanaka was being pressured by his mother to give her some grandchildren.

Definitely in my top ten songs by her. As soon as I read your post, I started singing it and my eyes welled up. I'm going through some things. Sometimes I find myself singing it when I'm putting on airs. I wonder would you cry for me if you knew. This is what music is supposed to do. And now I understand why MC wants us to relate rather than tell us who a song is written about. Although I think it's safe to say Side Effects is about Tommy.

by Andrew from the UK

I always thought Mariah had somewhat diminished that power and poignancy of Languishing by calling it an interlude. I recall many others here many years ago feeling the same.
Maybe Mariah means (in one fell swoop with just one word) in a song about damage to your person caused by the emotional abuse you received from a lover long ago is not forever. That is to say: the misery must be seen as an interlude in your life. That it is not what makes your story. That it is only what interrupted it.

Emotionally stiff (102,985)
by Randy from USA

One of the things I never understood is why journalists who review her albums call her ballads emotionally stiff. Since I've had a little time on my hands, I've been reading Rolling Stone, Slant, LA Times, New York Times and others' reviews of her albums that were written when the albums came out. We didn't have access to the internet back then haha. But they all seem to say the problem with Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow and Glitter are the ballads because she's emotion-less. I don't get what they want. My All, And You Don't Remember, Never Forget You, Against All Odds and Lead The Way are every bit as emotional as Celine's All By Myself or Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. What exactly did they want from MC?

MC should come clean (102,983)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|

There is only one other major female R&B singer without a label right now. Her name is Jill Scott. She only released one album on Atlantic and they dropped her just like MC on Epic with Caution. I guess when you no longer have the radio hits and enormous album sales, female artists have a difficult time keeping their record deals. What is Madonna doing differently that keeps her career moving forward without the radio hits and enormous album sales? If MC would go independent, she would receive more respect as an older female artist. A partnership record deal with a high profile pop or R&B male artist would help kick start her career too. I definitely could see Trey Songz or Ryan Tedder do a full complete album with MC.

Mariah has been recording for quite some time now. She said she would be fishing for a streaming deal for "The Butterfly Lounge", but it seems to be the general interest in her doesn't warrant the money they would spend. The Clark Sisters confirmed Mariah had them sing their asses off on a recording session, Tanaka was following her every move during the Butterfly "Lounge Sessions" to document the creative process, she also said she had recorded a lot during the pandemic because she had supposedly gotten her voice back. She actually has a lot of material, but I guess she hasn't been able to secure a viable record deal. She could release "The Rarities 2" to alleviate the pain of her fans for not having new music from her for five years now, but oh well, it is what it is.

How long does MC think she can keep the Lambs in the dark about the delay for the new era? I don't think I have ever felt this much in the dark about why we haven't gotten a new album. It has to be something on the business side of her career for the delay. Or maybe it is because vocal issues. MC should come clean soon.

Good news (102,964)
by Bobby A from United States

The Rarities is still a hot CD and album at independent retailers. The vinyl was priced at $92 at Waterloo Records in Austin. There was only one copy left. MC could release The Rarities 2 and it probably would sell $500,000 copies easily because of the possibility of the caliber of tracks would be fan favorites more so than the ones on The Rarities. I just want to hear that Bobby Ross Avila track that didn't make Caution. Imagine if it they wrote Usher's GLU that night in the studio.

I just listened to Sprung. It's a shame Mahogany and MC didn't do more songs together. He really captured a retro 70s feel that no other producer has been able to do for MC. Hmmm. Ultimately Mariah wrote all those songs, and she speaks fondly of them in interviews. I don't think she dislikes the music, probably more the personal life at the time. But even then, the song "Now That I Know" says all that needs to be said about how Mariah felt about entering into marriage with Tommy. "By your side I can conquer the world." And conquer it she did.
