Toronto shows (101,782) by Terna from Nigeria Watching the clips, [one] can tell she's really struggling to put on a "singing" show but her voice is really not having it, so she talk sings or alters the melody. I really wish Mariah would get professional help. Now she's also having lower range issues as seen in the "Emotions" and "My All" clips with the unintentional vocal breaks. Another thing I noticed is the repertoire itself isn't the best for a singer her age seeing as it was written "16 to 25 minutes ago", she's missing a lot of qualities that were there before which enabled her sing so well – [agility], fluid and seamless registers, stamina in terms of youth etc just the ease of singing she once had in [general] which was an amalgamation of all these factors and more working hand in hand. Charmbracelet - 20 years (101,727) by Randy from USA I remember a lot about that era. I couldn't believe how beautiful Through The Rain was and the video is stunning. She was still doing lipping climaxes to the records, but she was on every show, despite not having a hit single. The View, Oprah, Matt Lauer interviewed her, MTV gave her a special. I didn't care for a lot of the album and at the time, I remember one reviewer stating that she did so many different things on the album that it was like mixing watercolors only to end up with a puddle of brown. I remember Lyor Cohen saying that she brought class to DefJam. It was a time where MC garnered respect because of her earlier hits that weren't as far away, but Glitter wasn't the nail in the coffin. Charmbracelet was the first and last time I would pay to see MC live. She lipped most of it. I was in full fan mode that night with butterfly and rainbow stickers all up and down my arm. It definitely is a moment. Through The Rain is the only way I make it to work many days. I still play Lullaby and Subtle Invitation. The rest of it is largely forgotten. But the era isn't. Macy's performance (101,700) by Jamie from UK I was in NYC and missed Mariah by one day. I've just been back and on NY1 news they were saying she had auto cue for the lyrics in front of her. They were saying why would she need auto cue for a song she knows inside out. It did surprise me too but then I thought maybe if her nerves got the better of her could she get overwhelmed and forget her lines. It just seems like after Glitter, her voice started deteriorating with every album especially TEOM. I think it was all heavy belting during her tours from 1993-1996. MC wanting to be a perfectionist and the need to prove herself to others caused major damage to her voice. Then during the recording of the Butterfly album, we got the breathiness singing that we never got before. Her voice was beyond repair as evident on Memoirs and MIAM. It is going to be interested how much she uses a backing track and lip syncs during the Merry Christmas To All concert dates. Maybe MC will prove us all wrong starting December 13th. Chart question (101,617) by Bobby A from United States Does anyone remember Columbia's marketing and chart strategy in 1995-1997 to cause Fantasy, One Sweet Day, and Honey to debut at #1 on Hot 100? It had to be more than radio airplay and physical sales. I think back then that new singles were released to radio and retailers on Tuesday. MC only did it during that time only. Butterfly could have done the same thing, but Tommy must have pulled all Butterfly marketing money to lessen the shine on the song's poignant message and lyrics that made him not too happy about his wife breaking free from him. It needs to have some sounds that she has never done before. If not, the buying public and radio will not take notice. Also, her new Tik Tok promoting her Christmas shows was refreshing to hear with her current tone. MC can still sing but without the vocal prowess that she used to have.
