A message for B (83,163) by Bill from the UK B, I've always enjoyed your posts and I know you've always got Mariah's back which is always admirable. But to answer some of your post, yes you're right that plenty of singers lip sync and it is accepted as somewhat of an industry norm, rightly or wrongly. But Celine and Beyoncé can carry a tune in between the lip syncing. I've yet to find any evidence of Mariah doing that in recent years. You say she preserves her voice for the ballads but these are lipped as much as the uptempos, more so when it comes to Hero, My All, Without You, I Still Believe and others. Please direct me to the "incredible live vocals" before and after I Still Believe. I ask sincerely as I haven't seen any and I am genuinely interested and will happily be proved wrong. You're right also that Mariah didn't sing in church or the club circuit like others have, but B, she's had 25 years to get over her stage fright. If she is physically and vocally paralysed when on stage, she shouldn't put herself through that. No one minds that Barbra Streisand or Kate Bush have rarely toured over their long careers. We won't mind if Mariah scales back hers either. She looked very comfortable and confident on the Unplugged, Thanksgiving, and MSG performances, and completely commanded the stage during the Daydream tour. I think we all accept voices change over time. For example, Joni Mitchell's once sweet falsetto is now a husky alto. But she changed her songs and singing style to accommodate the change. If Mariah can take that huge, massive step of revealing her bipolar disorder and be as loved, accepted, and respected as she was beforehand, I guarantee the same will happen if she came clean about how she has lost her voice. There would be no shame from us, simply acceptance and gratitude to her for bringing great music into our lives for so many years. It's the denial, and the extremes she goes to in order to cover this up and mask it, all at the expense of those fans who have loved, adored, and supported her, that will never sit right with me. Re: Let's play a game (83,128) (83,132) by Bill from the UK Actually Vision of Love had its key lowered way back in 1996 for the Daydream Tour and MSG special. She should sing it the "Unplugged" way, where it's stripped down to its skeleton and sung lightly and gently, with acoustic instrumentation, rather than trying to replicate the studio version which, as you rightly say, is three and a half minutes, five octaves, and a ten second note too much these days. She literally mimes everything else. Amazing how Trey's voice hasn't aged at all. Agreed about the ear piece being theatrics to mask the pre-record kicking in. The same with the tiresome "finger in the ear for pitching" stunt she pulls for every high note. Getting old. She never had to do that all the time back in the beginning (when, you know, it was live). If she did it was for a second to genuinely gauge the pitch and then she'd carry on the note. What's funny is every Tom, Dick and Harry on YouTube who reckons they can whistle (scream in tune, mostly) mimics the finger in the ear nonsense. (Saturday 14 July 2018; 16:52)

If she had actually re-sung her part for the song then maybe you could dress it up as "Drake feat Mariah", but she didn't and it is nothing more than a sample. We didn't have Mariah feat. Tom Tom Club, Mariah feat. Treacherous 3, Mariah feat. Stacey Lattishaw etc. and she sampled those songs so heavily she was simply singing her melody over the original backing track. The thing is, you can, in a way, overlook a pre-record if she genuinely went back into the studio in order to use current vocals for it. A part of me would say, well, at least she put some effort into the damn thing and I get it, she has nodules, her ears have nodules, the band have nodules, everybody has effing nodules. I swear, if I see the word "nodules" one more time in the YouTube comments, I will scream. And yes, she's preserving her voice. She's been preserving it since 1997. It ain't gonna get any more preserved girl. Plus the amount she's pickled it with alcohol it should theoretically be in pristine condition. But, to stand there and mime (lip sync is even too good a term to use at this point) to the album version is an absolute insult to everybody who has paid money to go and see her. Surely you are within your rights for a refund due to the fact she has literally sang 10% of the concert live. And that 10% was atrocious, flat, unpleasant to the ear, and out of tune. Re: Who's a singer? (83,068) (83,071) by Bill from the UK This makes no sense. How could she sing the "you'll find the way" climax of Hero live flawlessly from 1993-1996, but then lip it ever since? I don't talk about this on the forum but I worked as a singer for 10 years and what you're saying is nonsense. Plenty of singers have soft voices and don't need to sing differently when on stage. She hasn't sung that live properly since the initial promotion of the song back in the early 90s. Did Mariah ever sing live the long closing note where she sort of crescendos down (if that's a term lol) through the note before the "come on babe" ending ahead of the acapella close out.
