If she had bothered to do what she's paid to do and actually sing it, maybe, but lipping along to a CD version isn't worthy of comment or acknowledgement.

Every song performed at Baku was horribly executed. If she was an unknown and walked in front of Simon Cowell and delivered that, she'd be thrown out the room. The worst was I'll Be There, Trey just completely wipes the floor with her every time they perform it. Why she still performs live is beyond me, unless it's purely for the monetary gain. It was an absolute embarrassment. The outfit, the tired set list, the dreadful vocals, the lipping. Wake up Mariah.

I've always preferred this version. It was the main radio/single version here in the UK.

Re: Mariah's voice was fab in Vegas, but... (76,495) (76,506)

I doubt I'm right, but you have to think about the devices most of these ad hoc concerts are recorded on. I went on holiday and recorded songs an Elvis impersonator was singing. In the flesh, he sounded fine, but when I played back the video on my phone, every inconsistency and duff note rang out as clear as a bell. Of course his sound set up isn't a professional one like Mariah's would be, but still. Maybe smartphones don't pick up reverb or whatever else the sound system peppers the vocals with. Not making excuses though, Mariah's vocal abilities have noticeably diminished over the years, which isn't unfair of me to say.

I think the majority of the Margulies compositions were pre-record deal and the Rhett Lawrence ones after she had been signed.

WBT (original) samples Two Occassions. It's the line where she says "Then I hear Babyface, 'I only think of you', and it's breaking my heart." Babyface was the lead singer of The Deele. Mariah then sang the whole chorus on the remix.

D. It is low rent, petty and negative. Mariah's previous "wall of silence" approach is very much missed. Not helped with fans wearing "I don't know her" branded merchandise. Just encourages these bad practices.

That's strange, as I was reading your message, and before I got to you mentioning Kate Bush, in my head I thought of Tori Amos, who is very often cited as the American Kate Bush.

I agree about Mariah Carey for the vocals and how unassuming Mariah was then. A great album. Lyrically it has to go to Butterfly. She's never topped that, although Charmbracelet did come close.

Re: Celine Dion performance (76,062) (76,069)

I've never really paid much attention to Celine Dion. I know a lot here are fans of hers, but personally I've always found her a bit bland. However, I do of course acknowledge and appreciate that she is a very gifted and intelligent singer. That said, the Billboard performance struck me as odd, if only because it sounded like she was singing with cotton wool in her mouth until the final chorus kicked in.

M3rry Christmas: Live is a great title and a great idea. I've always been in two minds about another live album, only because I love Unplugged so, so much. I felt the same when news of a second Christmas album came about, as surely nothing could better the original. MCIIY didn't better it, but it was actually a great follow up and her original songs on there were brilliant. So who knows?

Re: Battle of the albums round 1 (75,811) (75,812)

Great subject, but already it's hard to choose (exclamation mark). Both have their strong points and are dear to me but Emotions sways it because the upper register was perfect and unashamedly present on almost every track. The production was more coherent throughout due to MC co-producing everything. The songwriting was more mature, the ballads bigger and more atmospheric, and who cannot love the collaborations with Cole and Clivilles? On top of that, the three videos are three of her best. She'd gone out of that somewhat shy/awkwardness from her first batch and seemed genuinely confident and at ease. It was soulful and the influences from gospel and the 70s worked brilliantly. Also love the album cover and those earth tones.

Re: Mariah loosing a lot of fans thread (75,554) (75,569)
by Bill from the UK

She's not relevant anymore. She hasn't had a hit in years. I remember overhearing colleagues at work talking about her after the NYE disaster. They were all in their 30s and would have grown up with her music during the 90s. The conversation was peppered with comments like "I didn't even realise she was still singing" and "her last album was the We Belong Together one ten years ago" and "she only comes out at Christmas to sing AIWFCIY". The fact is MC has done so much damage to her brand and reputation in recent years that her only choices are to either clean house and have one last all-out attempt to right the ship, or continue on down the path she's on and fade into obscurity and cult fandom. It's pretty clear what decision she's made. I really don't think there is any coming back from where she is now. No one likes the diva behaviour, the catty comments, the brushing off of the horrific performances, the opulent unrelatable lifestyle, the diamonds, the splashes, the in-your-face trashy sexiness, the plastic surgery. People liked the big haired, big voiced girl from Long Island, who was humble and sincere and grateful. That girl who recorded her demos in a woodshop. She's now a caricature of what she was, like Zsa Zsa Gabor or some other faded silver screen starlet. What a waste of a God given talent. Never before witnessed something squandered right before my eyes in such a manner.

I could understand if the comments were about CB, as it didn't crack the top 50 in the UK, but TEOM was a top 10 and had one of the longest runs on the chart since Butterfly. It started as a top 10, hung around the mid 20s for several weeks, and then climbed back into the top 10. Her subsequent albums (and several before) were all pretty much a flash in the pan chart wise, where they enter and fall off completely after a month. TEOM was the only album of hers since the mid-90s that had any kind of chart longevity and which went up, down or maintained its position week to week. For comparison, Rainbow spent 4 weeks in the top 75, TEOM 43 weeks.
