I Wanna Dance With Somebody (108,310)

MC's problem right now is not having a solid team behind her and guiding her career. I feel she has been making a lot of business decisions on her own since she left Roc Nation. These bad business decisions have affected her voice, performances, and MC16's delayed release. I wish Babyface would save her career like he saved Toni Braxton's career with their album Love.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody (108,304)
by Jamie from UK

So I finally got round to watching the Whitney movie I Wanna Dance With Somebody. I really enjoyed it, but it made me feel sad at the way they portrayed her reflecting on loosing her voice. It got me thinking about Mariah and how she must feel. While they are both completely different circumstances, we know Mariah has her vices too. It must be really difficult to acknowledge you have lost your once powerful and distinctive voice. Whilst we don't fully know what's going on with Mariah, I can't help but think I want to sit down with her and get to the bottom of it all. She hasn't been herself for a while now, whether it be vocal decline or her mental state, something is off. She seems to have lost her personality, I can't quite put my finger on it, she's just seems different. I agree with her sitting down with someone to lay her cards on the table and then get the help she needs. She needs to know admitting things doesn't mean it's completely over. I think playing this façade of everything being ok is doing her more harm mentally. The problem as I've said before is firstly people around her approaching the subject and then secondly Mariah admitting to it. It must be really difficult for her, but I truly feel if she drops this diva persona, and portrays a classy approach to personality and craft, I think she would get more respect. She's done the diva, the hood persona, she's nothing more to prove, bring it back to basics and remind people of the great classy artist that she should be at this stage of her career.

Yes, it so sad about her passing. I send prayers to her children and family. I am glad that I have my collection to listen to her music. What is really bizarre is that a few months before her death she exposed on Facebook Live that Universal Music had been receiving all of her royalties and mechanicals for all of the songs she has written. That is really sad knowing she has been in the music industry for over 40 years and she doesn't have the money to show for it.

Just a thought (heading correction) (108,303)

I feel MC underestimates how well her ballads reasonate with the general public. I don't understand why she is so hesitant to release a WBT or DFAU type of ballad with Made For Me remix type of vocals. Yes, I am hungry for new music. I want MC back on the radio in 2025. I wish she wasn't such a perfectionist.

BFF, until we can get what Summer Walker says in her songs to hook men, the single life will stick around for us. Seriously, I have given up on finding love. I have come to the conclusion that having a someone in my life is not going to happen at this point in my life. Sad, but true for me.

So I've gone from singing "Lead the Way" to pumping "Breakdown" in the span of three weeks. Mariah really knows how to sing/write a song about emotionally unavailable men. I was getting all of these signals from him for weeks and this week all of a sudden it's like I've been iced out. I'm all up in my feelings.

I agree. I swear Oprah thinks she's Jesus, and when gets a papercut, she goes like: "Stigmata." I don't trust her, she's very skinny now and very hungry. Mariah needs a different platform, Oprah might be plotting to get her on Ozempic.

You know MC wouldn't be in this situation if we still had "the CD". I hate to sound old like a Generation X-er but there was a magic to going to the store, tearing the cellophane off, ripping that annoying plastic tape off the top and opening a disc. Reading the producers, songwriters and thank you's. Mariah could be making music and making money from that. But now that everything is free once it hits the internet she has to tour. In a way, I was glad because the record companies were greedy. Refusing to issue singles in the late 90s to force you to buy a whole album that may suck. Natalie Imbruglia anyone? But ultimately digital music failed the artists most. There's a coupe of great documentaries on it too. Oh well. I like retelling the experience to my nieces and nephews about how I was in Sam Goody buying Glitter when the towers fell. They look up and ask Uncle Randy, why were you buying supplies to make arts and crafts?

Mariah will perform on a stage that is build like a [Brazilian] flower called "Vitória Régia" that is very pretty. It will be globally televised so I hope you guys check it.

MC should come clean during an interview with Oprah. Oprah could help MC focus on her being a real person and whatever she has been dealing with concerning her voice. I just wonder if any medication she takes for bipolar affects her voice and her ability to sing like she use to. One would think after proper rest and an extended break, her voice would bounce back easily. However, we know after seven years of bad performances that is not the case.

I wouldn't mind MC miming as much if she put on a big budget show with a huge production (pyro, a lot of dancers, laser lights, etc), did some light choreography, had weeks of intense rehearsals and was an actual believable lipsyncer. Bey, Celine and Toni have mastered lip syncing but MC has never been good at it.
Sorry guys it just frustrates me that at this point in her career, she is performing at such a low level. I just don't understand. Toni Braxton has lupus and almost had a heart attack recently but is still giving high energy performances in her Vegas show dancing and singing. Anyone performing 35 years should be a master at performing and commanding the stage.
Sigh, I can't wait until this era is over. It feels worse than those lazy Vegas performances of 2017.

I gotta break it to you delicately, [beep]. Live Nation can't book anything without Mariah's approval. The idea that they locked in shows seven years in advance for her? Completely ridiculous. If she wanted time off, she could absolutely turn down any offers, no one's forcing her on stage. After her breakdown, she made it crystal clear that taking time off when needed was nonnegotiable, no questions asked. For whatever reason, she's choosing to keep milking the cow while the milk keeps flowing, and that's totally fine, just sing, put on a great show, and at least act like you wanna be there.

Branding/brand deals (108,255)
by Norman from USA
| |
|
|
To piggyback on the RA, Randy, and Will discussion: Does anyone have any brands they think would be a realistic fit for Mariah to pursue? She doesn't have a proven track record with anything per se, but I don't think it means there isn't anything out there for her.
Also, I'm not sure what her personal branding is anymore. She's being herself which is fantastic, but it's still a business and there should be something to point to outside of Christmas. Staying "booked and busy" is obviously every artist wishes to have, but I would wager something more elevated is needed for her caliber celebrity. More elevated but still accessible, you know?
I think Randy is right about the make-up and perfume routes being saturated. And as much as I like the Black Irish, no one goes out on the town drinking that like vodka and tequila.
I initially thought of shoes, but then remembered the stint on HSN with the clothing and shoes. I'd suggest a brand deal over her own line. Maybe a Louboutin or Jimmy Choo heel named after her, something she wears in a high concept music video (remember those? I'm aging myself). Something like that but fresher and less on the nose than what I just described.
Thoughts? Hey, what about golf clubs for laughs?

The effects of a different style of singing (108,252)
by Bobby A from United States

|

I was watching Ledisi perform on the NAACP awards show. One thing you can say about Ledisi is that the way [she] sings now is how she has always sang. She has never incorporated any type of acrobatics or crazy riffs or runs in her singing style. So, I am wondering what made MC start singing in that breathy style of singing in 1997. Although it may have added some depth to a specific song, I feel it may have been too much for her young voice in the late 1990s. MC's voice was still young and may not have been strong enough at that time to sing in that breathy style and sing in her head voice too in the same song.

You have the impressive talent of pulling facts and half truths out of your behind like there's no tomorrow. Mariah doesn't have to do anything she doesn't want to. She learned her lesson very well in the '90s. Her agreement with Live Nation isn't some ironclad obligation forcing her to be on tour nonstop as if she were a slave.
This isn't like a traditional record deal where artists get cash advances they have to pay back. Even if it were structured that way, she still has to consent to whatever is booked. Live Nation doesn't own Mariah, she has full control over her schedule and can take a break whenever she wants without issue.
So, stop with the "Me I'm Mariah, a poor damsel in distress" narrative. Mariah has more control over her career now than ever before, so no, she's not forced to be there, she chooses to be there. Once she agrees and signs the contract, she is contractually obligated to fulfill the terms, including any concerts or tours outlined in the agreement.

I don't think MC is hurting for money, but we all know her net worth has taken a 20 percent hit during the past 6 years without a new album and a huge world tour. I forgot to mention this in my last post that I would love to see MC on an ABC or NBC comedy show episode next fall season. I did enjoy MC in Wisegirls as Raychel.

I didn't know she signed with Live Nation. What bothers me about that is she's never been much of a performer. Even when she had the voice. I get record companies aren't handing out piles of cash to sign her but what about her past royalties? They're not enough to keep her afloat? I remember when she and Nick filed for divorce and some of the financials leaked. It surprised me that MC only made $4 million one year. For me, that would set me for retirement. But for her, the overhead, dahing. Trey Lorenz's sparkly blazer dry cleaning bills, Mary Ann Tatum's vocal coach studio rent, Evian with gold flakes for the dogs, Kristopher Buckle's contouring techniques copyright use, the squire who holds her iPhone, the squire who holds her Android, the rhinestone encrusted Suburban she is carried around in. She needs to seriously scale it back or sell her catalogue in one of those ridiculous publishing deals, if she plans to live at her present level. Maybe she should've married Packer. I kid. I kid.
