Should have at the very least been an r&b hit. I had it on a loop today it's one of my favorites Mariah produced with JD. Her voice and vocals are perfect and there's nothing to complain about with this song. Of course if you don't like JD's part haha but I love JD so I like his verse. I hope they work together again for Mariah's next album.

I agree, Butterfly was Mariah's escape from Tommy and she was able to be free and do the music she wanted. It's definitely probably her best album.

IMHO Butterfly, Charmbracelet, Memoirs are the three most personal albums from Mariah but Butterfly is and will always be "the" most personal one no matter what kind of album she puts out next.

I hope we don't have to wait another 7 years for the next album lol. And as you had mentioned Nostalgic or Nostalgia would be a good album title. It's strong and makes sense if Mariah wants to make a record that reminds her remaining fans of her past work. HFIA had potential with IYF and NII but as I brought up recently it really doesn't matter how good her next album is if the voice doesn't sound good. I am hoping something changes and she gets it back in better shape ala Caution.

MC's next album (113,251)
by Bobby A from United States

Do you think MC's next album will have to be her most personal album to date? I think MC needs to create a body of work that has a bold relatable album title that makes the non-Lamb scrolling on social media say, "Hmmm?" The album has to read like a personal diary with an infusion of jazz, pop, dance, and R&B. I want to hear more of the good, the bad, and the ugly next time. MC is going have to make a bold personal statement with her next album like Jill Scott did today.

I love the AI version of "My love", f you ask me it would have fit perfectly on the Butterfly album. I would have swapped out "Whenever you call" as it's one of the few songs from Mariah I don't care for. I imagine "Jesus I do" in Music Box voice or Emancipation voice.
Speaking of "Jesus I do", I want Mariah to work with Kirk Franklin for another gospel number. I love "Jesus I do" and I love "Fly like a bird". I feel "Fly like a bird" is a personal song for Mariah and one most of us love. I also have a great love for "I pray" and wished it was longer and had made it on TEOM. I wish we had gotten a gospel album in 2015 instead of another greatest hits none of us needed.

Well said. There is an AI version of My Love (Butterfly era) floating around the internet. Wow. Check that one out. There is one thing, though, that does unite all these vocal eras - the songwriter. No matter how Mariah's voice has changed, no matter what era is used to create an AI version of one of her songs, there is one constant in all of this - the songwriter. Those lyrics are truly what makes her music so special.

It's okay Stacey, I also listen to AI versions of Mariah as well. For me it's not so much me wishing she still sounded like her younger self it's just for fun. We all have our own fantasy Mariah song covers we wish she had covered. The AI version of IYF in Daydream voice is so addictive and amazing. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting Mariah to get her voice back in shape I just think she doesn't care anymore. I'm still listening to Caution and HFIA regularly though. NIA has become of my favorites along with "Jesus I do".

I absolutely love the messages from HFIA, song and album. But I'd be lying to myself if I wasn't a bit conflicted when listening to these songs given her current voice. It's just not the same. I feel like such a cop out seeking AI versions of HFIA, IYF and NII using Butterfly and/or Daydream vocals, preferring to listen to those versions sometimes. At the end of the day, I can't be too sad. I have such an amazing, unmatched by anyone catalog of music to listen to.

That's the Mariah I miss. Confident, singing live, happy and engaging with the crowd. She went off singing that song and I think that might be her best performance of the song. Oh and the hair and dress was on point. I'll never get over the disaster that was of that era.

I agree her voice was perfect and sounded so angelic that year. It seems like everything went down hill after her shoulder injury and after the divorce. One of Marian's problems is that she is surrounded by yes people and more and likely they don't care about her voice or legacy.

If she stops drinking or smoking whatever purple taking her higher, she will gain back her voice. Remember when she was pregnant in 2010 and she performed One Child in Washington? Her tone of her voice for the first verse specifically the part "blessed baby boy" that was pure Music Box tone but the mature version.

Mariah's voice (113,239)
by Giovanni from USA
| |
|
|
I'm glad we're finally discussing the current state of Mariah's voice. There are many fans who are delusional and who are in denial. I really think Mariah doesn't care and has just accepted how she sounds and like Edward said it's sad. I really do like HFIA but it would be so much better and enjoyable if Mariah had her MOAIA or Caution voice. I appreciate her giving us another album but I believe there is something that happened or something that's going on and why her voice sounds the way it does. I read that medications can cause dryness and inflammation and that's what we hear. I feel so bad as I'm typing this because I feel as though I'm trashing her but I'm not. I just want her to sound good again and I refuse to believe that's not possible.

I doubt Mariah had her nodules removed. The success rate for nodules removal especially today is high. If anything she would sound better. Her problem is she doesn't take care of her voice like she used to like in her younger days. A lot of fans say she has vocal damage but I disagree it's definitely the champagne. Vocal damage can be fixed. One of the things I love about the Caution album is that her voice sounds very good especially in. Even during the pandemic she showed she was in a good place vocally. I don't wanna judge Mariah but I definitely think she turned to drinking to cope with something. A lot of people in the industry turn to drugs or drinking to cope with the stress life of being an artist or because of loneliness/depression. I sometimes think would she be in a better place emotionally had she and Nick still been together. Even with Bryan she looked very happy and alive which makes me believe she might feel lonely at times. I truly believe her kids help a lot and give her a reason to live. I hope whatever she's going through especially health wise is helped by God.

There's a picture of Mariah with designer Fausto Puglisi he posted on his Insta and her hair there style looks different than when she hit the stage for her performance at the Olympics but that is how I like her hair styled. In fact I would love if she got a shoulder length cut and went brunette again. I like you am over the long hair it's so TEOM.

What MC really needs moving forward (113,199)

I couldn't agree more. I have been wanting Mariah to write with Diane Warren since 2013. They could definitely come up with something good. As for a new manager I say bring back Stella. She would fix everything and put Mariah back on top where she belongs.

What MC really needs moving forward (113,189)
by Bobby A from United States
| |

I have been thinking all day about what MC needs for that "big moment" in the spotlight for at least 6 months before she drops a new album. First, she needs a Diane Warren collaboration theme song for an upcoming new movie or sequel. Second, she needs a JD and Johnta Austin follow-up to We Belong Together without repeating the same formula. Third, MC needs a high profile collaboration this year. Finally, she needs a young manager who can put her back on top with her current voice.

I agree I have never been a fan of the long hair and Mariah looks better with shorter hair. I loved her milf cut in 2013 when she sang "Looking in" in New York in her arm sling and her appearance on Jimmy Fallon also from the same year. I wish she would go back to being a brunette.

If she insists on being a statue, at least get a style update. The Cowardly Lion Mane has to go. It totally ages and dates her, makes her even less accessible. Bring back the honey gold blonde hair with more volume up top and maybe even side-swept bangs.

Both of you are wrong. Mariah sang ABMB live in 2009 at iHeart radio, it's available on YouTube. She also sang WBT live in 2013 at GMA. The climax is up for debate but judging by her face at the end I would say it's live. She looked so mad and annoyed haha. Two very good live performances in case anyone hasn't seen them.

It's been a while since I've paid attention to the Grammys and boy did I make a mistake tuning in. It was probably the worst Grammy awards ever. It got way too political and the performances were awful. Bad Bunny winning album of the year was the shocker of the night for me. I really thought Gaga was going to take it. And Trevor Noah my guy you have no talent.

I'm sorry but I was not impressed with that tribute. It was all a big disappointment and a slap in the face to Mariah she deserved better. Where was Kelly Clarkson, Ariana, Bruno Mars, Yolanda Adams, Usher, Beyonce even Patti Labelle? I did surprisingly enjoy Kesha and Charlie Puth's performance. Billy Porter was awful and I don't think ABMB was appropriate for him. He was also giving me Whitney Houston in drag with that hair. If you're give a tribute to a legend like Mariah get some better singers.

She really did look straight out of 2005. I've never been a fan of the long hair but she rocks it well. I also loved the ensemble it was sexy. Mariah at 56 is still that girl. How many women can look that good at her age. She looks like she's watching her weight too cause she looks fit. Curvy but not fat. She was giving Emancipation Mariah at Billboard.

Third Christmas album (113,080)
by Giovanni from USA
| |

Before 2025 I really didn't care for Christmas or Christmas music, I'm much more of a Thanksgiving guy but now I appreciate Christmas much more. Acknowledging and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. I consider myself both a liberal and conservative person when it comes to religion. I absolutely believe in God and have starting liking gospel and Christian music as of late. I really appreciate Mariah making both Christmas albums especially the second. In fact I like Merry Christmas II You much more. Her voice sounds mature and her tone and vibrato sound better. Mariah was taking care of her voice when she was pregnant. Her rendition of "The First Noel" is fantastic and beautiful. I would love a third Christmas album one day. Maybe we can get a duet with Roe.

It's becoming a fan favorite I believe, needs a video. It had potential to be a hit if Mariah had a fan base that streamed her music. I also believe "I don't" could have been a hit if it was a solo. The video is terrible though in my opinion. I enjoy HFIA for what it is. Mariah proved she still can write and produce a decent record. All I want from her is to work on her voice and continue doing the music that makes her happy. What I noticed is that she seemed to get a little of her confidence back in some of her live performances.

I feel the same way, Giovanni, I prefer "Caution" over "HFIA". I've been dreaming about an album where Mariah Carey returns to her beginnings. I envision a sound reminiscent of her earlier work, similar to her first albums up to "Daydream". It would have a pop vibe with a touch of R&B, featuring elements like those found in "Fantasy" or "Dreamlover", as well as "Love Takes Time" or "Without You", and songs akin to "Underneath the Stars" or "Can't Let Go"
Additionally, it would be great to hear another remake or duet, which has become a tradition on her albums. I hope she titles the album something like "Nostalgia", "Old School", "Back Then", or "Classic", something that fits the overall theme.
