Hero live MSG 2022 (101,853) by BFF from United States
In the late 1990s, she used to talk about how she liked singing "Hero" live because it was easy for her to sing and because she could mix things up. Watching that clip makes it clear that something is really wrong.

Has she rehearsed or prepared her voice at all? Part of me wishes she had not ended her Vegas residency, those shows were not perfect but having that obligation in place ensured that she had to put at least some effort into preparing. I get that the pandemic contributed some to this, but plenty of other artists started doing shows again much sooner than Mariah.

I agree with Terna, Bill and others who are putting forth honest assessments and critiques of Mariah's performances. It is not hateful or demeaning to point out what is objectively true: Mariah is not training/exercising her voice. She is not taking care of her physical health. She is relying heavily on pre-recorded tracks and altering those tracks from time to time to disguise the lip syncing.

We do not need to be in the audience at these shows to know what's going on. Many of us have been following her for years and know all of the tricks she has used to disguise the lip syncing since the late 1990s... back when she did it more sparingly.

Mariah needs honest people in her circle to tell her the truth. Sometimes the kindest thing someone can do is to tell the truth rather than to go along with the charade.

It really makes me sad that their duet was pre-recorded. "Away In a Manger" is not a difficult song to sing, and it feels so wrong to have Monroe in on the pre-recording grift.

I think Mariah should take personal responsibility like Linda Ronstadt did and retire from live performing. Ronstadt stopped performing in the late 2000s because she was uncomfortable charging people money to see performances in which she was basically just shouting. Linda Ronstadt has a degenerative condition - progressive supranuclear palsy - that rendered her unable to sing.

As far as we know, Mariah has no such condition and just chooses not to train and exercise her voice and take care of her physical health the way she needs to. The constant lip syncing, the altering of prerecorded tracks to disguise lip syncing, the shout-singing, the mediocre vocal performances are impossible to ignore and are really disrespectful to the people who pay good money for the shows. This would be okay with Janet Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, et cetera who are mostly about choreography, but it's not okay for someone known for singing.

Mariah on Colbert (101,765) by BFF from United States
I thought it was great. Her vocals were great, and I could tell she did not pre-record them. They sounded like Daydream era. And she sounded so witty and articulate talking about being mixed, dah-ling. She looked like a skinny legend. I love hearing her tell the same stories over and over, and how dare anyone on this board criticize her for it.

I cannot wait to hear the pre-recorded tracks she's using for her Christmas shows and cannot wait for the repeated breaks for tea, champagne, wardrobe changes, and hair and makeup.

Charmbracelet - 20 years (101,730) by BFF from United States
I remember thinking that Mariah looked great, happy and healthy during 2003, especially during the tour. I found the album itself pretty underwhelming because I felt Mariah's singing on it was too restrained. The production and lyrics on most of the songs were really good, but I couldn't understand why Mariah did not let loose on every song the way she did on "Bringin' on the Heartbreak". I remember the Rolling Stone review of the album commenting that the Def Leppard cover was the best moment on the album and kind of agreeing with that.

Bill, I'd like to remind you that pointing out anything that is unflattering to Mariah is insulting and demeaning. All posts must be reviewed by Mariah's team of expert sycophants to determine if it's flattering to Mariah. If it's flattering, we will allow it to move forward as "facts". If it's not flattering, the information cannot be mentioned.

Article: Drama with Donna Summer (101,687) by BFF from United States
Unfortunately, that kind of behavior tracks. If true, Mariah had a lot of nerve to come at Donna Summer like that. On a more positive note, Donna Summer sounded great singing "Reflections" on that show. Too bad she got pushed out of the Supremes medley portion, though she probably would have out sang both Mariah and Diana.

Irene Cara (101,685) by BFF from United States
I know, right? I love Irene Cara and think it's unfortunate she never had any big hit albums. Most of her musical success came with songs she recorded for soundtracks.

Macy's performance (101,678) by BFF from United States
Bill, she's on "vocal rest" in preparation for the pre-recording of tracks to lip sync to for her "Merry Christmas to All" shows. You're being so unfair.

Macy's performance (101,672) by BFF from United States
Randy, I have no idea what you're talking about. Mariah lip syncs? That absolutely never happens. She's just performing the "album version" like she did with "We Belong Together" on NYE 2016. I thought everyone loved the album version? Why would you ever expect Mariah to sing live any way? The cold outdoor air hurts her vocal cords and she can't hear herself with the crowds. As a medical expert in the field of vocal chord trauma, I recommend that Mariah complete all performances from home via Zoom call in a room full of humidifiers with a full team of sound engineers. We must also allow for 30 minute breaks every two songs for tea, makeup and wardrobe changes.

I don't understand why Mariah insists upon doing tacky stuff like this. It makes her look incredibly narcissistic, selfish, and vain. I wish she would just stick to the holiday music, performances, movies, books et cetera.

What are you talking about? Mariah cares *deeply* about women's rights. She's woman and it's her civil right to sing poorly for dictator cash.

What are you talking about? "Vision of Love" sounds just as good as it did in 1990. There's nothing wrong with Mariah's voice. She sounds amazing. Yas queen.

What about "Triumphlop"? Or Mariah's best music video of all-time "I Don't"?

I think Mariah should release a compilation album called "Greatest Flops" just for us fans.

Re: The Pitchfork lists (101,384) (101,386) by BFF from United States
It's not bitterness as much as it is skepticism. Pitchfork didn't even bother to review a Mariah Carey album until 2014 when "Me I Am Mariah" was released. The publication didn't pay much attention to any genre other than indie rock during the 1990s and 2000s and has always had an elitist Brooklyn hipster vibe. So my question is "Why now?" after years of ignoring Mariah and other artists deemed "not cool enough".

The Pitchfork lists (101,381) by BFF from United States
I'm glad to see Mariah getting some love, but, to me, it feels a little forced at this point. I mean, how many years did most of us on here spend loving Mariah when it wasn't cool? How many of us went out on 9/11 to buy the "Glitter" album because we knew there would be some gems on there? And do we really need Johnny come lately hipsters to tell us how great of an album "Butterfly" is?

And as much as I love "Fantasy" with ODB and "Always Be My Baby", Mariah has far better songs in her catalogue. I honestly think the ODB collaboration is a bit overrated and that songs like "Breakdown", "Crybaby", and the "My All" So So Def Remix are better examples of Mariah's genius integration of hip-hop into her style.

I'm going to try and be as positive as possible about the performance. The dress looked nice. The Metallica joke was funny. Her pre-recorded tracks sounded good.

Songs she should not perform:
1. Shake it Off
2. Touch My Body
3. Obsessed
4. I Know What You Want

Songs I'd like her to perform:
1. Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)
2. Honey
3. Make it Happen
4. Vision of Love

Re: My All (101,258) (101,263) by BFF from United States
Agreed. I remember listening to most of those #1 songs from 1998 over and over and over. I know R. Kelly is an unsavory character, but I quite liked that Celine/R. Kelly duet. My grandma really liked Celine Dion, so thinking of that song reminds me of her. "The Boy Is Mine" was also a huge favorite. And that song "Too Close" was super catchy but incredibly inappropriate for me to be listening to when I was 10 lol.

Re: If Butterfly single was released (101,240) (101,244) by BFF from United States
I think it could have had a chance at #1 if they timed the commercial release correctly. It was getting quite a bit of airplay for a song without an official release. The Elton John single was #1 mostly based on single sales. "Butterfly" may have only gone to #2, but I still think it should have been released. It is one of her best ballads, and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" is excellent and adds a whole different dimension to the song.
