Did anyone else see the social posts from people close to her around Thanksgiving? It looked like a happy, relaxed and festive moment. That's all that matters and is all I want for her at this stage of her life. |

I am torn as well. I've seen Mariah every time she's come to Chicago, from Music Box through Caution, and part of me wants to keep the streak going. But I already saw her Christmas show at the Beacon Theater during its second year in 2015, which may have been the best year for it voice wise. Also, ticket prices have become ridiculous post-COVID, so that turns me off and makes me tired of playing that game. Lastly, based on the most recent videos, I'm not sure if it's even worth it. With that said, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the Christmas special that aired last year, so maybe she'll pull some miracle and it'll sound good. So, yes, I'm also torn. Perhaps I'll watch last year's show off my DVR early December and decide then. |

What is wrong with Mariah? (103,777)
by Lady B from USA

Her legacy is cemented. Nothing she does now will take away her 19 #1s and place in music and writing history. That isn't a "yass queen" take, that's just reality. |

Libra, we all are truly concerned about MC's career. Retirement will save her legacy. If she continues down this path of poor performances, YouTube viewers and music critics are not going to be nice anymore. She should stop performing live until her vocal issues are resolved. I would rather have The Rarities release #2-5 for the next 5 years than for MC to continue performing live and sounding a hot mess. I just wish Kuk Harrell or Mervyn Warren or Donald Lawrence were around in the 90s as her vocal coach producing her vocals. They would have told her no to the way she sung in that breathiness tone from 1995-1999 and to stop the whistle notes. If only Tommy made MC have a vocal coach during those early years, we might not be cringing in our seats now with every live performance. |

Mariah ought to strongly consider shaking up her Christmas tour set-list by interspersing the Christmas songs with non-Christmas songs,
When she played "Yo New York in the house" at the London O2, 20,000 people went crazy only to fall to awkward silence when it cut short only for Mariah to joke "Nooo, that's a whole other show." Why does it have to be? You would be hard pressed to go to any pubs, restaurants, malls, etc., in December where they only played Christmas music. Too much Christmas irritates people.
I found that the Christmas set-list dragged a bit and would have been much better alternating between Christmas and non-Christmas songs. It would also have the effect of opening up her regular catalogue to a Christmas audience which is never a bad thing. |

I often wonder why did it take Tommy to discover MC. She had this beautiful voice in high school and the help of her brother Morgan after high school. Could it be that if Tommy had never been handed her demo tape, that we probably would have never had a Mariah Carey? The world didn't need another Whitney Houston or Aretha Franklin? MC sounded and emulated the both of them at the beginning of her career. It wasn't until her voice started to change in 1997 that we got a very different sounding Mariah and her musical style evolved into what it is today. I think Potrait gave us the full circle Mariah Carey who looked back at her career in a song. Just me thinking that God is not done with MC yet. This woman has bounced back so many times and caught the world's attention again. |

We interrupt this crazy with news just in: criticizing a music artist is absolutely okay. Anybody on Earth wanting praise and adoration must accept that there will be critiques and criticisms along with it. Anybody who asks "Do you like the ensemble?" many times over must be prepared for the answer to be no and reasons given. If it made Mariah "happy" to take her clothes off I salute that. We all need to be happy and it's not easy to achieve. But her fans and followers were not looking for the nakedness and girly attitude from her. By Rainbow she was doing interviews in skimpy bikinis, bouncing around in videos with her bra-less breasts knocking left to right and on stage crowning herself the winner of her own beauty pageant every night on tour. People didn't want that from her, I would offer, so they starting turning away. She had the right to do so just as they had the right to. It's okay. I am just making observations which I am absolutely 100% qualified to do. Just as I am absolutely 100% sure that the any claim made to the extent that the other tracks on Daydream are copies of, or attempting to emulate, "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day" are, well, absolutely absurd and total tosh. And I know you're going to get a lot of opposition to spouting such spurious nonsense. Daydream means a hell of a lot to almost everybody here. |

I agree with you that some people got a pass while Mariah was being disparaged for formulaic and schmaltzy ballads that came off as emotionally flat. But Mariah was definitely guilty of this especially during the Emotions and Music Box era. Some of that material was very catchy, but very cliché at the same time. Some vocal performances from that time period - especially on recordings - focused on frenetic but impressive vocal gymnastics that appeal to people who prefer Hallmark card sentiments and adult contemporary/romantic comedy kitch.
Daydream is when I really started falling in love with Mariah Carey as a creative singer-songwriter. She started making more intelligent musical "choices" as a vocalist then and begin to sound more like a creative person with something other than skill and novelty to offer. In other words, the artist I thought she foreshadow it on her debut album took centerstage by the time Butterfly came out. |

How long does MC think she can keep the Lambs in the dark about the delay for the new era? I don't think I have ever felt this much in the dark about why we haven't gotten a new album. It has to be something on the business side of her career for the delay. Or maybe it is because vocal issues. MC should come clean soon. |

All about Mariah posted a beautiful Mariah quote today, "Not everybody realizes that I write my own songs and they definitely don't realize that I produce them."
Mariah is without doubt the most successful female songwriter and producer and top 5 of all time (men and women) included. What Kelly said was so accurate. Mariah isn't talked about in those circles when great songwriters/producers are mentioned, and I'm sorry one award three decades later isn't enough, Mariah deserves 10 other prestigious "icon" songwriting/producers awards.
Mariah has won so many songwriting awards but they weren't televised not that nobody really watches those anyways, like the fact that she has over 33 BMI awards for songwriting.
I mean this imperfect angel is unbelievably successful yet it don't compare to her talents, A gracious musical genius who devoted her life to her music and her fans. She is a real life Barbie, has an overly girly persona, she is so sexy and she knows it, a person of faith. Many people can't handle a women who dares to speak up, knows what she wants and who likes to be in control. History has shows that usually has insecure men bothered. The critics now mostly resort to baseless accusations and try to go after her character when so many from the industry and not just the stars has said she is one of the nicest people in the industry.
The facts and the numbers will remain while the subjective commentary will be buried. |

Kelly Clarkson comment (102,932)
by Lady B from USA
(Tuesday 27 June 2023; 14:50)
I think the folks who pay close attention like the people on this board and the industry people (Songwriter HOF) recognize/know she's a songwriter too, while your average bear probably thinks of her solely as a singer.
Juxtapose that to Kanye or Dr. Dre, who I think most folks think of as both producers and rappers, not solely rappers. Again, I'm talking the casual fans, not folks like us or voters for the Songwriter HOF. |

Pride performance (102,870)

(Monday 12 June 2023; 05:50)
I don't miss out on an opportunity to see Mariah live and happened to be in LA for her Pride performance. I'm here to tell you, the best part was the energy that both the crowd and she gave each other. It was truly a celebratory moment and she did so many versions of songs I had not heard before. Most of all, she and the crowd both seemed to be having the time of their lives. Didn't hurt that she looked amazing and her dancers certainly played up to the audience. Good vibes all around. |

The folks on the list are there primarily for their business ventures/money earned outside of music. Rihanna isn't worth $1.4B because of her music, but her beauty company and other ventures. One might say they leveraged their popularity better from a business POV, but it's hard to argue the music point. Fair? |

I completely agree. For three years, Mariah was incredibly popular across the globe and no one really compared. However, those three years plus her US-only number one records does not mean she is the most popular female singer ever/today and should therefore be sitting atop every single list ever, unfortunately. As fans of hers, we are mired in her success and statistics, but looking at it objectively, it's clear and obvious as to why she wouldn't feature on that list and the others didn't. It's nothing for anyone to be upset about, there's nothing to be done about it. Ask yourself what has she done since last Christmas? The Christmas before that? The Christmas before that? A couple of lipped concerts and an endorsement for McDonalds. |

Actually you've said the people on the list are there instead of her because they were more popular than her at the height of her career which is an opinion, not a fact, and is undercut by objective data.
The truth is that the people on the list are on the list mostly for ventures they have done outside of music, not their music careers. Good for them and their teams. |

You seem to be a lil bit obtuse. "Yass Queen" doesn't refer to sexuality. It refers to what delusional fans like yourself blindly call Mariah when she has done a great or horrible job. No one on that list had more #1 hits than Mariah did over her top 5 year period and definitely not overall so that's an odd statement, but we're all entitled to our opinions, no matter how flawed they are. |

It's probably right. All those artists you listed are incredibly popular, absolute juggernauts of the industry. Way more popular than Mariah was during her peak. The only real comparable is Celine. Her career is longer, her hits bigger, her tours and residencies gross more, and her sales likely bigger at this point. Mariah's career is great, but others have had better ones. |
