Chick album in 2021? (97,039)
by Geri551 from UK

After attracting significant buzz, it all went silent on Chick. I am assuming (well hoping) that this was because the Christmas season was approaching but I hope the project hasn't just been shelved or forgotten about.
Do you think we will be getting the Mariah version of the Chick album? It would be lunacy for her not to release this - the news that Mariah had recorded an alternative rock album attracted more interest in her music (aside from Christmas) than we've seen for a decade.
I really like the album and would love to hear Mariah's lead vocals.

You all need to get prepared to be very disappointed for a very long time because things are going to continue as they are. Making non-Christmas music costs Mariah money.
I am sure she will always release non-Christmas material as her artistry is important to her but people need a major dose of reality about Mariah's position in the music industry in 2021.
Mariah is a legacy artist 30 years into her career. There is no shame in this, some of you acting like she should be competing with Taylor and Ariana are just absurd, it is like saying Diana Ross should have been competing with Mariah in 1994.
Album sales are now non-existent, in the 90s you had the likes of Patti Labelle, Aretha and Chaka Khan getting gold selling albums for an album that didn't even hit the top 50 of the BB200 - now artists are hitting number 1 and not getting sales of 500,000. To complicate matters further, artists of Mariah's longevity are not getting streams. Mariah can't make money from making non-Christmas records. The production of the record, music videos and promotion almost certainly actually costs her money. Hard fact.
Lets not pretend Mariah's contemporaries Madonna or Janet or Celine are somehow doing better, for a new album they get one high chart position on the BB200 for opening week by adding a copy of their new album to each ticket sale. The album drops like a rock and they barely get any streaming or radio play. They are greatest hits artists, who stay relevant (and make a lot of money) by touring. That's reality.
At this stage Mariah has two options, becoming a greatest hits touring artist (she already is to some extent) or embrace the Christmas queen moniker. With the latter for one month a year it is like it is 1995 again. Janet, Madonna, Celine etc simply cannot compete with that.
I suspect her approach will be a combination of the two. She can never compete with Celine (or Madonna) when it comes to ticket sales but the eternal success of Christmas has given her unparalleled platform and will be her ultimate legacy.
If people can't get on board with that idea, get ready to become very disenchanted every year!

I confess this stuff confuses me a bit so apologies if I have misunderstood it. So Merry Christmas has jumped 2 million in just over 1 year since its last certification.
8x Multi-Platinum - December 14, 2020 6x Multi-Platinum - October 1, 2019
The mind boggles where this album could be in 5-10 years time if it continues to add approximately 2 million each year. Logically it will realistically be Mariah's third diamond album next year as AIWFCIY seems to be proving even more popular this year than it did last and sooner, thereby extending its peak for a long period.
Same with AIWFCIY: 8x Multi-Platinum - December 14, 2020 6x Multi-Platinum - October 9, 2019
I would have thought she'd crack a 10 million selling next year as well.

Does anyone know why MTV Unplugged is excluded from Mariah's album tally?

That is great - doesn't that mean Mariah with 66.5 million units certified is now just two million short of Streisand?
As "AIWFC" is a guaranteed hit for the remainder of time and will keep adding to MC's tally, it seems inevitable that Mariah will eventually overtake Streisand and become the top selling certified female in the US, which would have seemed impossible a few years ago with the collapse in album sales.
What an achievement and way to end 2020!

Jonas Kaufmann (96,834)

Jonas Kaufmann, the world's most popular living tenor, is the latest performer to record All I Want For Christmas Is You for his new Christmas album. It's an interesting rendition, by no means my favourite version, but it is a testament to the extraordinary genre crossing impact of this song.
I know Mariah can't really see beyond or function outside of the R&B/Hip Hop world that is her comfort zone, but as she and her team explore further ways to exploit this song and cement her legacy and cross genre appeal in the years to come (especially in a huge market like Germany and Central Europe where Kaufmann is a huge star on a par if not surpassing Mariah), some form of collaboration may be an interesting idea.
I'd love Mariah to do a concert like the Christmas in Vienna special that Diana Ross did in the 90s, recasting her Christmas albums in a live setting with an orchestra.

With all the negativity, I would love to know what people genuinely expect?
Janet Jackson's career is now limited to be a touring greatest hits artist. Celine hasn't had a song even chart on the Hot 100 since 2008 and is also now a touring artist based on her greatest hits. Toni's last album released a few weeks ago charted at number 163. Whitney is sadly dead.
Let's not pretend that Mariah is somehow alone in not having a career like it was 1996. I'd say of the 1990s great divas, Mariah and Celine are the two with the healthiest and most sustainable careers.

As opposed to what exactly? Nothing? None of Mariah's 90s cohort are exactly burning up the radio or notching up the streams. What would Janet or Toni Braxton give to have the kind of opportunity that Mariah gets every year?

Why would Mariah abandon her Christmas Queen label? It would be lunacy. It gives her a guaranteed income every year (being Mariah Carey costs money.) and builds up her fame and legacy.
A good comparison may be Bette Midler. She trades on Hocus Pocus, almost 30 years after the movie was released. Why? Because it is part of pop culture, it attracts press attention to her every year (she has been threatening a sequel in press interviews for the past 29 years), she performs as Winifred in her live shows. Every year a new generation of young people are introduced to the film. It is accessible.
Like it or not All I Want For Christmas Is You is Mariah's ultimate legacy and will guarantee her place in pop culture.

Comparing apples and oranges. Mariah is not in the same category as the Beatles. Trying to create some comparison between the two is entirely unfair to Mariah. The success enjoyed by the Beatles was and remains unparalleled.
Celine and Mariah have very different core audiences and it isn't surprising that Celine has more success at touring, while Mariah has far higher streaming of recent musical releases.
Celine's core fanbase is middle class, white women, the same as Barbra Streisand. They are a consistent and reliable audience for Celine as they have been for Barbra.
Mariah largely chose to reject that audience in 1997 and has done little to appeal to them since. She has aimed at a younger, more urban audience. They are much less likely to be able to pay to see someone in concert but more likely to stream music.

Um I think you need to relax as you are catastrophising. If Mariah never gets another stream, sells another ticket or album, she has made more money than anyone of us could ever imagine and will continue to do so for the remainder of her life.
She will continue to hit the charts every year for as long as Christmas is celebrated, which is nothing to sniff your nose at. Her legacy will be remembered and celebrated by her fans and the dozens of vocalists who came after her who have publicly named her as their inspiration.
Mariah has never been a particularly hugely popular live performer, even her short Music Box tour in 1993 did not sell out. That is a consequence of the fact that she is not a natural live performer and she never developed a reputation as a live touring act.
You seem to dislike Mariah the person and want her to become something she isn't, so just enjoy the music. If others don't like it that's their decision, nothing you can do about it.

I think success of albums is increasingly viewed not by copies sold or even streams but the ticket sales the accompanying tour sells or what commercial endorsements a performer can attract off the back of a record.
It's a whole new world from what it was 10 years ago, let alone 25 years ago. In the early 90s, an album by a legacy artist could peak in the bottom rang of the Top 200 and still go Gold. Now you have albums peaking at number 1 which sell 100-300k copies total.

I was thinking recently about songs I wish Mariah had recorded in the 1990s and "Soon As I Get Home" was one of the songs I wish was on "Butterfly" or even "Daydream".
I don't like the idea of Mariah doing a Babyface covers album, too specific but maybe something like a Great American Songbook type record would be a good idea and would reconnect her with older fans - I could imagine Mariah singing "The Man That Got Away" or "Que Sera, Sera". I think she would need to go back to her 90s style of singing fluidly though, the R&B whisper build up just wouldn't work on standards such as those. She doesn't need to do fancy belts or anything, look at Diana Ross who has sung much of this material wonderfully. She could do a tour of theatres once Covid is over, TV special etc. It would be a big deal purely because it would be so unexpected from Mariah.
I hope there is a sequel to The Rarities and I am not too bothered that it wasn't a big hit, these types of records never are. There must be additional material which remains. I am intrigued by Mariah's repeated references to "the vault" and herself being surprised by what's in there. I have visions of some dungeon in a caste that she only visits once a decade for a few minutes. Someone needs to get in there and have a good clean out.
I personally am hoping that the Mariah version of the Chick rock album is released. I hope that isn't just about forgotten about, I think a song like "Prom Queen" could actually be as powerful and important a song for Mariah as "Hero" and needs to be promoted.
A duets album would be a good idea but I think Mariah would need to be imaginative in selecting duet partners, an album of her and a lot of rappers and R&B singers will basically just be a repeat of her recent albums. Imagine her doing a duet with Reba McEntire or someone from the rock genre, it would blow people's minds.
I would like Mariah to attempt an album with a completely brand new team i.e. no Jermaine. I have often wondered how different Mariah's career would have been if she had been open to recording songs by other writers - I was listening to "Unbreak My Heart" and it just screamed Mariah to me and I thought what a shame that wasn't on "Daydream" as it would have fitted in perfectly. I would love to know whether Mariah has been offered songs by writers over the years and if so, which.
Mariah is 30 years into one of the most successful recording careers in musical history - I think people have to be realistic now about what "success" at this stage in her career looks like. The chances of her having a non-Christmas related number 1 single or album, or even top 10 are very, very small. The entertainment industry is not set up to support a 50 year old plus woman having regular success like that. In the years to come, she may have a hit or even two but its unlikely but I hope she uses the years ahead to expand her horizons musically.
