Paula Abdul also did it (albeit with an animated video) in 1989 with Opposites Attract, which reached number 1. How can we forget Ms. Abdul dancing with a cat?
I think Mariah's became the blueprint for many others because of her already established influence on pop, how deeply contrasted she and ODB were, the success of the song, and the timing of release.
Fantasy remains one of my favorites to this day and I still love when I hear DJs play it. A timeless crowd pleaser.

I think Mariah has had a significant amount of work done. Not judging by any means, but this video highlights possible procedures. She covers a lot of celebs and analyzes them in a polite, nonjudgmental way.

Personally I don't care for Hero, nor do I care for Through the Rain. If we are talking lyrics, which you are, those stand nothing against Outside or half of the Butterfly album.
Who cares? Someone liked Hero. Someone's liked Through the Rain, and another, Outside. I harbor no judgment, but I guarantee that more people know Hero. C'est la vie.

Imagine if she was finally recording a studio version of Just Be Good to Me. They did produce it originally.

Re: My ranking of Mariah's albums (97,450) (97,452)

1. Butterfly 2. The Emancipation of Mimi 3. Daydream 4. Caution 5. E=MC2 6. MIAM 7. Mariah Carey 8. Glitter 9. Emotions 10. Rainbow 11. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel 12. Music Box 13. Charmbracelet
Butterfly will always be my number one - if nothing else, for the songwriting and narration alone. Mariah really developed her craft here. Daydream follows for vocals and as a subtle lead into a more urban, adult sound.
I love Caution era. A total mood album. Thematically, so cohesive. Give me The Distance, and you can keep all of Memoirs.
And I love the E era party vibes. Love upbeat Mariah. I prefer her having fun versus waning over a lover on top of a slow arrangement.
Rainbow would be higher if asked years ago, but in my opinion, songs like X Girlfriend and How Much really haven't aged well. Also feels choppy. She clearly recorded it quickly and wanted out from the label.
Never really liked Charmbracelet - sorry. Love performances of Through the Rain but her diction is poor on the album and I feel like she kept reaching but never achieved a smash hook.
Now just realizing I'm partial to the newer part of her catalogue, though Music Box was one of my first cassettes ever.

Re: #MC30 releases are back (97,184) (97,190)

MC has always verbalized her dislike of the film production and certain decisions, not the soundtrack. She has even defended its commercial performance by reminding people it's a soundtrack and, thus, should not be compared to a studio album.
Side note: I wish I could have seen Sweet, Sweet Fantasy and her performing Loverboy.
She has something up her sleeve. I wouldn't read too much into it, considering she is more open to talking about Glitter than ever before. There's obviously some strategy to this.

I check this site daily and finally created an account to respond. The most critical remix of HATEU is the one sampling "at night, I think of you..." with Gucci Maine.
Even non-Lambs get down with this, whereas her standard dub mixes are not as universally friendly (and IMO, do not age well).
And hello from Texas. Been a lamb since Music Box and seen Mariah a bunch of times - Today Show for Memoirs, Caution in Houston, Beacon Theatre, even with Lionel in Dallas - so happy to be here, dahlings.
