It's just ironic that MB 30 is getting a bigger spotlight than Butterfly 25. I don't think MB being 5 years older makes any difference. Butterfly is her album, the album she was so close to. Happy 26th to the real magnum opus (103,514) by Randy from USA While everyone is celebrating Music Box and incorrectly calling Daydream MC's artistic zenith, I'd like to interject and celebrate the real magnum opus, Butterfly, which turns 26 today. On this day, 26 years ago I unwrapped the cellophane off of this CD in my fathers basement and popped it in the disc changer. I never before heard an album where every song is a single. Every verse reads like poetry. And every vocal is astounding. Rasp, falsetto, belting and whistles are all used here. My biggest issue with R&B music is artists always sing about romantic love or break ups. This Pop/R&B album includes songs about childhood pain and alienation. It is in one word stunning. Daydream is Mariah's magnum opus (103,475) by Stacey from USA I always felt like TEOM was Daydream, part 2. She went back to those formulas that worked so well on Daydream and used them again on TEOM. She wrote crossover hits that could be played on Pop/Adult Contemporary stations as well as hip/hop R&B stations. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love TEOM because it reminded me of Daydream. After CB, I thought the light airy whisper was her new direction and I was a bit sad. I miss that strong middle of the road full voice vocal. She went back to what made her so successful in the 1990s, the voice. Remember the theme to TEOM? The return of the voice. Daydream oozes perfection. With Music Box back in the spotlight, it got me to thinking about his marriage to MC. Tommy has been married to Thalia for over 20 years. Is he that controlling with her as he was with Mariah? What are Tommy's thoughts in 2023 about MC's remarkable career? Does he have any regrets about how he kept such tight reins on MC? Does he have any regrets about marrrying MC? Was he trying too hard to mirror the record label executive relationship that Clive Davis and Whitney Houston had? Whatever he was trying to mirror worked extremely well until the music relationship became a physical relationship. I think the Emotions and Music Box albums were all about that physical relationship. Pushing that aside, she was a human being first. A mother, a daughter, a sister. She truly was one of the best singers of all time who just couldn't get it together because of some dark secrets she felt pressured to keep. The Obsessed video and song probably would come close to being controversial because she didn't know how Eninem would react to her comedic portrayal of him in the video and the shade lyrics about him. However, she has had many single releases that received a negative promotional plan or very low radio airplay. Can't Take That Away and H.A.T.E.U are on the top of the list for this category. You messing with Daydream? (103,043) by Stacey from USA It's a good thing we aren't face to face, lol. I'd have to take the necessary steps to defend Daydream. Randy, I know exactly the version you are talking about. That's my favorite version of Fantasy too. I absolutely love every song on that album. Looking In is my life's theme song. From the amazing bridge to I Am Free to the sultry layering of vocals on Melt Away, Daydream just oozes perfection. The album includes the emotion that maybe was missing on MB for some. Since I've had a little time on my hands, I've been reading Rolling Stone, Slant, LA Times, New York Times and others' reviews of her albums that were written when the albums came out. We didn't have access to the internet back then haha. But they all seem to say the problem with Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow and Glitter are the ballads because she's emotion-less. I don't get what they want. My All, And You Don't Remember, Never Forget You, Against All Odds and Lead The Way are every bit as emotional as Celine's All By Myself or Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. MB30 (102,916) by Bill from the UK Hmmm. Ultimately Mariah wrote all those songs, and she speaks fondly of them in interviews. I don't think she dislikes the music, probably more the personal life at the time. But even then, the song "Now That I Know" says all that needs to be said about how Mariah felt about entering into marriage with Tommy. "By your side I can conquer the world." And conquer it she did.
