About Stacey from USA:
Been a fan since 1993. Favorite albums include Daydream, TEOM, and Music Box. I love a good discussion, but won't stand for hateful comments because we disagree. I am too old to deal with drama and so are you. Keep it real with me and we'll have some fun. Peace.

Happy 26th to the real magnum opus (103,523)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
As much as I love Daydream, I agree Butterfly was her transformative signature album. It's just ironic that MB 30 is getting a bigger spotlight than Butterfly 25. I don't think MB being 5 years older makes any difference. Butterfly is her album, the album she was so close to.

Happy 26th to the real magnum opus (103,514)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
While everyone is celebrating Music Box and incorrectly calling Daydream MC's artistic zenith, I'd like to interject and celebrate the real magnum opus, Butterfly, which turns 26 today. On this day, 26 years ago I unwrapped the cellophane off of this CD in my fathers basement and popped it in the disc changer. I never before heard an album where every song is a single. Every verse reads like poetry. And every vocal is astounding. Rasp, falsetto, belting and whistles are all used here. My biggest issue with R&B music is artists always sing about romantic love or break ups. This Pop/R&B album includes songs about childhood pain and alienation. It is in one word stunning. Happy anniversary to Mariah's favorite. And the best album of all time. From any artist.

Daydream is Mariah's magnum opus (103,475)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
I always felt like TEOM was Daydream, part 2. She went back to those formulas that worked so well on Daydream and used them again on TEOM. She wrote crossover hits that could be played on Pop/Adult Contemporary stations as well as hip/hop R&B stations. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love TEOM because it reminded me of Daydream. After CB, I thought the light airy whisper was her new direction and I was a bit sad. I miss that strong middle of the road full voice vocal. She went back to what made her so successful in the 1990s, the voice. Remember the theme to TEOM? The return of the voice. Daydream oozes perfection.

Mariah was artistically "stifled" on Music Box? How interesting.
She did, did she not, write the songs? She did, did she not, produce the songs? She did, did she not, create the vocal arrangements? She did, did she not, commission the remixes on which she...? Oh, you get me. The pretention of you.
Mariah does, does she not, sing Hero in every concert? Mariah does, does she not, sing Dreamlover in every concert? Mariah's breakthrough hit, was it not, Without You? The audacity of you.
Music Box is one of the best selling records of all time. Do you see Mariah denying or lessening her involvement in it? Do you hear her, for example, wishing it had been different to the extent she was forced into this in slave labour? The stupidity of you.
The lambs do bleat foul under the impression that pre-97 Mariah was chained to a piano leg with Walter Afanasieff sucking the creative blood out of her. What absolute nonsense you have willingly been fed. Do not regurgitate it in my presence.
(That's a posh way of saying STFU and GTFO.)

Tommy's thoughts about MC30 (103,424)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
Listen to the lyrics for All I Live For. Hello Tommy, don't be jealous. With Music Box back in the spotlight, it got me to thinking about his marriage to MC. Tommy has been married to Thalia for over 20 years. Is he that controlling with her as he was with Mariah? People don't change. Yet we don't hear any stories of how controlling he is with Thalia. Is there more to the story, Mariah's part in all of this? Just curious. Thoughts anyone?

Tommy's thoughts about MC30 (103,408)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |
|
|
I was thinking today after looking at the album cover Mariah Carey. What are Tommy's thoughts in 2023 about MC's remarkable career? Does he have any regrets about how he kept such tight reins on MC? Does he have any regrets about marrrying MC? Was he trying too hard to mirror the record label executive relationship that Clive Davis and Whitney Houston had? Whatever he was trying to mirror worked extremely well until the music relationship became a physical relationship. I think the Emotions and Music Box albums were all about that physical relationship. The evidence is substantially real in Emotions, So Blessed, Music Box, Now That I Know, and I've Been Thinking About You. They were all about Tommy.

I have just relistened to both about fifty times now side-by-suide, but I can't hear it. She seems to end the phrase on the same beat the guy in the audience ends his contribution. Can you imagine being that guy, now? On another note: when you listened to Hero at Proctor's Theatre did you picture the audience member in a black and white striped T clapping and shaking his head in disbelief? I bet you did. Now, can you imagine being *that* guy?

Disc two (103,332)

I'd argue MB 30th is better than what she did for Butterfly 25th release. I thought Butterfly was her most personal release and what we got wasn't a whole lot. Yes, we got digital EPs of all her remixes from that era. But most of us had already heard of them. I'm talking new, unreleased stuff. Thoughts?

by Randy from USA

I know everybody on this board has a different relationship with Whitney Houston. Some love her, some hate her. Pushing that aside, she was a human being first. A mother, a daughter, a sister. She truly was one of the best singers of all time who just couldn't get it together because of some dark secrets she felt pressured to keep. I don't care what anyone thinks, I really feel like she and MC liked each other. And I miss her.

MC is one of few artists who has never had a controversial song or video. The Obsessed video and song probably would come close to being controversial because she didn't know how Eninem would react to her comedic portrayal of him in the video and the shade lyrics about him. However, she has had many single releases that received a negative promotional plan or very low radio airplay. Can't Take That Away and H.A.T.E.U are on the top of the list for this category.

It's a good thing we aren't face to face, lol. I'd have to take the necessary steps to defend Daydream. Randy, I know exactly the version you are talking about. That's my favorite version of Fantasy too. I absolutely love every song on that album. Looking In is my life's theme song. From the amazing bridge to I Am Free to the sultry layering of vocals on Melt Away, Daydream just oozes perfection. The album includes the emotion that maybe was missing on MB for some. Now back away slowly from Daydream and no one gets hurt.

Great post Stacey. Yes, it can't get any more emotional than with "Til the end of time". A person who doesn't feel anything while listening, has no connection to the heart and soul. "Can't let go" is in the same "league". And "So blessed". I tested it today and had immadiately goosebumbs when her voice gets darker on the song.

One of the things I never understood is why journalists who review her albums call her ballads emotionally stiff. Since I've had a little time on my hands, I've been reading Rolling Stone, Slant, LA Times, New York Times and others' reviews of her albums that were written when the albums came out. We didn't have access to the internet back then haha. But they all seem to say the problem with Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow and Glitter are the ballads because she's emotion-less. I don't get what they want. My All, And You Don't Remember, Never Forget You, Against All Odds and Lead The Way are every bit as emotional as Celine's All By Myself or Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. What exactly did they want from MC?

Hmmm. Ultimately Mariah wrote all those songs, and she speaks fondly of them in interviews. I don't think she dislikes the music, probably more the personal life at the time. But even then, the song "Now That I Know" says all that needs to be said about how Mariah felt about entering into marriage with Tommy. "By your side I can conquer the world." And conquer it she did.
