Trilogies and sister songs (113,053)

I get why CTTA would be a good choice, sonically and empowering but imo I've always looked at that song as more of a statement, even a diss song to the label at the time for the treatment she was getting post divorce. So for me, it doesn't really fit with the other two. It's definitely in the same realm of style and production.

Wow that's a lot of sisters, almost a huge family. Speaking of Whenever You Call, I always thought of it as the sequel to When I Saw You. The lyrics, the melody, the build up, even the production are somewhat similar. Or it could also be All I've Ever Wanted Part 3.

Trilogies and sister songs (113,026)
by Haiji from United States

If you think about it, Can't Let Go would be the original WBT. The song structure, writing format, even the how she sings the verses, builds up to the climax. I'm not speaking about the style of singing since she sings a bit faster on WBT. And I know she pretty much does the whole build-up to climax on almost every song. I hope I'm making sense lol. So for me, the sister songs would be CLG, Everything Fades Away, Melt Away, Whenever You Call, Crybaby, Never Too Far, Yours, We Belong Together, DFAU, I Stay In Love, For The Record, H.A.T.E.U., Angels Cry and Faded. I'd throw 8th Grade and IYF in there but they're slightly different to me, since there's a beat change at the end. I do agree with the trilogy being WBT/DFAU/ISIL.

AIWFCIY original, ExtraFestive, SuperFestive. OK, just kidding. I would say WBT/DFAU/ISIL could be a potential trilogy, or swap ISIL with either Love Story of Last Kiss or Thanx 4 Nothin'.

Speaking about deep cuts (113,015)
by Haiji from United States

Thank you. I agree with a lot of what you mentioned. She definitely can do any genre. I'm also hoping for a jazz album soon, but we'll see. Long Ago was very fresh sounding to me coming from MC. I'm a lamb that goes back to the very beginning. I was 10 and heard my sister's friend playing the cassette, Vanishing, I instantly fell in love and borrowed the tape and she eventually gave it to me. I can't recall any song from debut up until Daydream, to be similar sounding to Long Ago. So when I heard it for the first time, I loved it right away and it's still one of my favorites. I was very refreshing and I loved that beat. I liked Fantasy for the video mainly tbh. I had a huge crush on her and would tell everyone I was gonna marry her one day when I'd watch it. Fantasy has never been a favorite. I like the remix but I rarely play it. But I see what you mean. I wish Want You was a solo and not a duet though. I didn't really care for Eric Benét on it. Caution is a great album but not a favorite. I like just a few songs on it but rarely play them. I still listen to HFIA on a daily but the songs are scattered in a playlist with other artists. My favorite is IYF and IWAI. Praying for that deluxe though.

Speaking about deep cuts (113,008)

I enjoyed your post very much. I think I know what you mean with "Long ago". I never heard a female singer sing so "cool" and urban like Mariah did on Long Ago. The same with Fantasy. But what I loved about Long Ago was the groove and at the same time the sad undertone. It's almost hypnotic. "Want you" is very underrated too. I love that "80ies tune" and her soft, soulful voice on it. Her music catalogue is outstanding. Mariah can sing every genre, from pop to soul/RnB, jazz, country, soft-rock, gospel, blues, maybe grunge lol. It's very rare, and almost every album sounds different. It can never get boring. I still have to discover her newest album fully. But NII and "I won't allow it" are my favourites too. "Your love" is beautiful too. Mariah is the queen of covers too.

Alone In Love (up until recently, a couple posts here have shown love to it), Sent From Up Above, If It's Over, Never Forget You, I Am Free, Long Ago, Forever, The Beautiful Ones, Crybaby, Want You, Subtle Invitation, Joy Ride, O.O.C., Ribbon, Standing O, and Faded.
These songs don't really get much love imo. Just until recently I've seen a few posts that mentioned AIL. Especially the post about it being a mature song, and I agree. The vocal even sounds mature. It's one of my favorite from her debut along with SFUA. It's mainly the production and background vocals that I love. With IIO, it always gave me timeless, soulful, real. I never could decide on which version is the best, the original, the grammys or snl. They're all great. I wish the whistle was clearer on the grammys version. NFY was probably my favorite song on MB. It was actually the extended remix. So underrated. It's One Sweet Day's little sister. IAF is vocal masterpiece, lead and background. The writing is almost foreshadowing. Wasn't it written before she was actually "free"? Long Ago along with IAF, are my 2 favorites off Daydream. Long Ago was so hip hop to me back then in the late 1900 and 90s lol I remember while wearing headphones, discovering a vocal part at the end where she's using her tongue to make the sound and it blew my mind but no one else could hear what I was hearing lol. Forever is so classic sounding, it almost gives soft Hawaiian vibes and idk why younger me always pictured Elvis Presley in a black and white movie in Hawaii wearing a flower lei lol. The climax on that song is so good. TBO is so euphoric to my ears, from both Sisqo/Dru Hill and MC. Omg the vocal harmonies, it's like it was like the original but completely a whole different song. Love both versions but MCs surpasses the og. Once Again the climax, Crybaby had me in high-school sing-crying "why is it 5am and I'm still up spiraling. I don't get no sleep, I'm up all week", after a breakup lol. Want You, to me, is almost the epitome of an 80s r&b/pop song. The whole production and lyrical style could've easily been on the radio in the 80s. Such a great song. Subtle Invitation should've been a single. It's never mentioned when speaking about writing. Her pen was on point considering times were changing and r&b was heading towards a more explicit tone. Oh Joyride, I love you so much. You truly take me through that roller-coaster ride. And that ending, wow. Wish that voice was still here, but the song is, so I'm good. OOC is so fun and free. I wish she'd do more song like this. It's the little sister to both I Won't Allow It and You Don't Know What To Do. Ribbon is great but my favorite version is the remix with Dream and Ludacris. It's so sexy and her vocals were fire during this era. Standing O was good as well and should've been a single but I believe she had legal issues with this song. It was the only one that didn't get a remix treatment for Angels Advocate album. Faded is my favorite off MIAM, my least favorite album. I listen to a few tracks off of it but don't care for the vocal tuning and metalic sound on her. Faded was the most natural sounding song on there and I absolutely love the whistle note on it. I didn't mention any songs from Caution because I do see a lot of love for the majority of the songs on it. HFIA is new, so we still need some time to let it marinate lol. Although I feel I Won't Allow It should eventually be a single with video. Anyways, hope yall enjoyed my rant lol and hope everyone is blessed for this new year and the other new year some celebrate

In Your Feelings and "stuff" (112,930)

This might actually make more sense. I wasn't thinking the 4 letter F word lol I was thinking the S word. I'm hoping there isn't another version of IYF using explicit words, it'll take away from the song imo. I'm praying for a video and single treatment soon for this song.

I get what you're saying but tbh that wouldn't make any sense. The line is "Sweet tender love, you said you promise, now I feel stupid and stuff", that other 4 letter word wouldn't rhyme nor really fit. Not unless she's saying "stupid and stuck", which still wouldn't be explicit. I'm really curious to know why the radio version has it bleeped out. I did also notice some wrong lyrics on some of the new songs on the album.

It is really difficult to tell what MC is saying during that particular verse especially with the word "stuff" at the end. I guess radio programmers don't want any FCC complaints from listeners complaining that MC is saying the other four letter word.

Hello everyone. Happy holidays. So I've been hearing IYF on the radio on multiple occasions since a little before Christmas, but my question is about the radio version, if anyone has heard it yet. Why is the word "stuff" bleeped out, from the line "Now I feel stupid and stuff"? Am I missing something? Does that word have an alternate explicit meaning nowadays?

HFIA remix album (111,656)
by Haiji from United States
| |
|
|
If she or the label decided on taking the Angel's Advocate route but actually release a remix album, this is what I'd want it look and sound like. Each song would be remixed in vain of how My All/Stay Awhile was mixed, sampled with an older track, completely reworked. Keeping the 70s groove, soul and funk with each track.
1. Mi (feat. SZA) 2. Play This Song (feat. Silk Sonic) 3. Type Dangerous (feat. Eric B & Rakim) 4. Sugar Sweet (feat. Rema) 5. In Your Feelings (feat. Lucky Daye) 6. Nothing Is Impossible (feat. Miles Canton) 7. Confetti & Champagne (feat. Brandy) 8. I Won't Allow It (feat. Beyoncé) 9. My Love (feat. Paul McCartney) 10. Jesus I Do/You Brought The Sunshine (feat. The Clark Sisters) 11. Here For It All (Disco Revival Mix feat. Purple Disco Machine)

HFIA review (111,607)
by Haiji from United States
| |
|
|
I'm in love with this album. Let me just cut to the chase lol. I'm loving everyone's reviews. I haven't stopped listening to the whole album, no skips, the past 3 days. I'm actually listening to the album as I type this lol. Ok, so here it goes...
Mi - Nice opener. This one is for the youngins. It kinda reminds me of "I'm That Girl" by Beyoncé from Renaissance. Idk why that is though lol.
PTS - At first listen, I felt disappointed. I'm not sure on what I was expecting but it eventually grew on me and now I love it. As the next single, I'd wait for like the 5th single. I'm sorry, I have to agree with the webmaster, the video is boring lol watched once, sorry MC.
TD - I still love this song. As others have said, it makes sense to have it on the album to balance it out. Does anyone else also says the parts she says on the video ("you're blocking my light") as you're singing along?
SS - This song has grown on me. I wasn't a big fan of it at first but since I've been playing the album with no skips, I'm starting to appreciate it more. I heard the solo version twice and made me like the features even more. To me, the solo version sounds like it could've been the demo.
IYF - This is my favorite song on the album. Everything about it is perfect. This should be her next single not PTS. This is everyone's favorite while reacting on YouTube. I've also come to terms with her new voice and I'm still "here for it all". At first listen, I cringed at the vocal part to "picture" but that also grew on me lol. I love how she's doing more of switching up the beat at the end of her songs. Loved it on 8th Grade and Giving Me Life.
NII - I like it. I won't skip it but it's definitely my least favorite. It reminds me of Hero and like I've said here before, I've never connected with that song. Maybe one day it'll mean something to me. And tbh, her vocals at the end are not great to me. I appreciate the stripped down instrumental but I felt some more layers of vocals was needed to cover her vocals a bit.
C&C - Cute song, also for the youngins. I love the production. I can hear Brandy on it. It does remind me of Brandy's song Should I Stay?
IWAI - My 2nd favorite song. It's so fun and free. Loving the 70s groove to it. Also reminiscent of Beyoncé's "Cuff It". This should be the 4th single.
ML - I didn't think I'd like this one since I've heard the original and it never did anything for me tbh. Her voice sounds the best on this song. The emotion behind it, almost brought me to tears.
JID - Another favorite. Was so happy playing this while cleaning Saturday morning. I love that she came full circle with The Clark Sisters feature. I remember her debut era interviews, how she'd always mention her inspiration from them. Great song.
HFIA - I didn't like the snippet online. I loved the full song instantly. Beautiful song, sad song. It kinda reminds me of Butterfly, the song. Like her older sister. The ending had me elated. It was like a kiss on my forehead. Great ending.

Random thoughts, again (110,610)
by Haiji from United States
| |
|
|
I wish I was able to message more on this board but lately I've been extra busy to the point where I'm reading some of your messages at a red light lol. Which is why I'm leaving these random thoughts once again.
*I've heard TD on the radio a total of 4 times since released, all in my car, 2 different stations. It was the clean version, bleeping out "ho*s".
*I heard SS once and it was slightly different in sound and Kehlani's part was taken out, so only MC and Shenseea.
*I think they realized that SS was released too soon and far from album release, so they stopped promo and now trying to buy some time to re-launch the song with a video and remixes. In a recent interview she stated a video and some remixes coming up.
*Either the 3rd single gotta have WBT status, to be a ballad, or it has to be a hit club banger, for the outside world of lambs to wanna buy her new album, just my opinion.
*I kind of don't want the 3rd single to be the title track. From what it sounded to me was similar to Portrait and as much as that song is a favorite, it's not single worthy.
*The top producers recent list is for the 21st century, so while I can agree that MC should definitely be above some other artists mentioned, I feel her placement on that list for this century is fine. I'm just happy they even considered her.
*It was stated that her duet with AP will have a 70s groove to it, which makes me think it'll have similar vibes to Silk Sonic's sound. That might be a hit.
*Also hoping she would later on release the PM cover and it's "Dear Boy".
*Hopefully she releases something this Friday, whether it's the tracklist, a video or the remixes.
*Her BBC and Pitchfork interviews were nice to watch, her energy was up. I also enjoyed her breaking down some of her music videos and on Capitol FM interview, when she played "Bored Now". I think she liked having control of the interview lol. I absolutely love Alan Carr's interview but this one was a bit cringe. I feel like she would've relaxed and been more into it if he hadn't made it weird with the vulgarity. I get that's how his show is and she's been there before but she's older now, times have also changed. She's a seasoned, classy woman. Like someone mentioned here before, I think she was most comfortable with those type of things during the Nick era and that's understandable.
*Robert, what are your predictions for this upcoming Friday?

Random thought (110,296)
by Haiji from United States

|
I was watching videos on YouTube and came across a clip of Mariah in the movie The Butler. So I went on a "Mariah acting" binge with her different roles and was reading some of the comments on how much people were really amazed and feeling her acting. Makes me think why couldn't she get a really good acting coach and really continue a serious acting career. If she ever decides on retiring from music, I'd love to see her in some serious roles. Can you imagine if she was to have a flourishing acting career like her music career?

I wish for an interview like this one for the release of HFIA. Molly always knew his stuff and always gave her room to speak and answer his great questions.
