Mariah Carey doesn't show up for longtime collaborator (113,965)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States

I agree with the thrust of this. Mariah is definitely to be commended for co-writing and co-producing her own material, but her work writing and producing for other artists is pretty marginal. But then again there are not many successful recording artists who also have major success composing material for others. It makes sense because you wouldn't want to give away great self-penned material to others if you can keep it for yourself. Bruce Springsteen gave "Because the Night" to Patti Smith and Stevie Wonder gave "Tell Me Something Good" to Rufus and Chaka Khan, but those songs are exceptions rather than rules. No song in Mariah's catalog exemplifies this more than "Hero". Tommy was right to insist she keep it rather than giving it to Gloria Estefan.

It's crazy that Mariah was first recognized by Songwriter Hall of Fame first, when she's not even writing anything anymore. Her latest album took maybe 10 years to write, and I love the album and all, but that does really warrant a Hall of Fame award?
Mariah is a great writer, written so many great songs, and from the very beginning of her career she wanted to be known for that, not just her voice, because that's what really separates her from the great divas. And she never stopped talking about how she writes constantly and it's a passion of hers and all.
But she's not even writing anymore. She's not written a great song for other artists, which is really the mark of a great writer, someone who can write for others. This is the part of her career that is so lacking.
Mariah, if you want to be known for being a great writer, then write.

Everything Fades Away (113,962)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States

She didn't have enough humidifiers and didn't sleep for 23 hours the night before to prepare her voice. That's why she pre-recorded the vocals. She was on vocal rest so that her voice would be rested for more pre-recording sessions for The Celebration of Mimi and Christmas shows. She needs a least 72 hours of sleep before she can pre-record vocals.

Glitter anniversary (113,937)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|
|
I'm so excited for the 25th anniversary edition of Glitter. I just know Mariah will be digging out some gems from the Glitter sessions - unreleased songs and remixes for "Loverboy", "Never too Far/Hero Medley", "Don't Stop", etc. Maybe we will get a "#JusticeForGlitter" Vegas residency? Even if it's heavy on pre-records, it would still be great to see her publicly acknowledge the album that way. I'd also love a deluxe Blu-ray release of the movie with lots of bonus features.
I think we should get the details over the next few months since 9/11/01 is the original release date.

Reported attempt to put Mariah under guardianship/conservatorship (113,846)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|
|
I've heard of "Hollywood Babylon" but preferred to stick with Diane Dimond's book because the book stressed that these abuses impact more than just celebrities. She talks about how the guardianship/conservatorship system has been used to victimize people from all walks of life. We should care about the issue regardless of the social/financial status of the people involved.
I knew about Wendy's case and suspected that it may have been attempted with Mariah. But I had never heard it confirmed before. My guess was either Morgan or Stella because both seemed motivated by money and their involvement would align with the official accounts of Mariah's health struggles in 2001 and 2016.

Reported attempt to put Mariah under guardianship/conservatorship (113,843)
by Lambi from USA
| |

Hi lamb. I recommend reading the book Hollywood Babylon. It highlights:
• Exploitation by managers/studios/family. • Repeated public breakdown/mental illness narratives. • The entertainment industry profiting from vulnerable stars.
The recurring theme is that stars are treated more like assets than people; controlled financially, medically, and publicly. They sort of follow the same playbook anytime someone tries to get out of major contracts. I believe Mariah survived 2001 by the grace of God.
As much I think she is tremendously strong and is a true survivor, I also think after decades of atrocities against your life and legacy, you are inevitably going to be fatigued, which is what I've been feeling from her in these last years. Her overall demeanor, even when laughing, still has that cloud hovering over it. There is such a deep sense of sadness in her eyes that you can just feel.

Reported attempt to put Mariah under guardianship/conservatorship (113,830)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |

I'm currently listening to the audiobook of Diane Dimond's book "We're Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong", which is about abuses of guardianship like those committed against Britney Spears.
I just came across a passage where Diane Dimond lists celebrity cases where someone attempted or proposed a guardianship/conservatorship and Mariah's name was mentioned alongside B.B. King, Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen and others. Has anyone else read or heard anything about this?
It doesn't surprise me that someone tried this against Mariah and it seems most likely to have occurred during the 2001 hospitalizations or the 2016 incident. Stella seems the most likely culprit in my opinion. Dimond's book makes it seem like the system is very easy to weaponize for financial gain. No wonder Mariah was so outspoken in her support for Britney.

I think most states level higher property taxes when a home isn't used as their primary residence. It's definitely not unique to New York or California, but I'm sure the tax rates are higher in those states. Mariah's not making the same amount of money - that's true.
I think Mariah's making the right decision to off load the penthouse apartment in NYC. It doesn't seem like she's been using it much in the past 10 years, and she's both rented and purchased homes elsewhere. It sounds like she found a house she likes in Connecticut. Diana Ross has lived in Greenwich for a long time, and I remember visiting that area and thinking it was really nice.

Once again, stop pulling stuff out of your behind. There's no such law, it's just a proposal called the Pied-à-Terre Tax that's been floating around in New York politics for over a decade now.
Mariah is clearly downsizing, and I think she's being smart about it. A lot of artists do that as they get older and the money isn't coming in like it used to. Mariah herself has said there's not much money in streaming, and she's not doing long arena tours either.
By the time you pay Uncle Sam, agents, lawyers, managers, staff, and all the other expenses, there's really not as much left as people think. People acting like Mariah is still making 90s money are delusional.

Mariah cover songs (113,805)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|

Technically, "Chain of Fools" was a live performance with Aretha Franklin, who is the artist that popularized the song, so I wouldn't say it qualifies as a cover version by Mariah. The duets with Luther and the live performance with Patti LaBelle were both "covers" because "Endless Love" and "Got To Be Real" were songs popularized by artists other than the people Mariah performed them with.

Mariah cover songs (113,798)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States

A covers compilation album is an excellent idea. Mariah has so many great and lesser known cover songs, and it would be great to have them all in one place.
1. Don't Play That Song (Live) 2. I'll Be There 3. Just Be Good To Me (live from Music Box Tour or Daydream Tour) 4. Without You 5. My Prayer 6. Endless Love 7. Open Arms 8. The Beautiful Ones 9. If You Only Knew (live) 10. Got to Be Real (live with Patti LaBelle) 11. I Still Believe 12. Sweetheart 13. Do You Know Where You're Going To? 14. Against All Odds 15. Out Here On My Own 16. Didn't Mean to Turn You On 17. Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (No Rap Version) 18. Bringin' on the Heartbreak 19. You And I (Live) 20. With You I Am Born Again (live with John Legend) 21. Help Me Make It Through the Night (from "Tennessee") 22. I Want to Know What Love Is 23. One More Try 24. Lullaby of Birdland (live) 25. Don't Explain (live) 26. My Love
This could easily be a two-disc compilation, and I bet Mariah has some others buried in the vault.

I like the idea of Mariah releasing a compilation cover album, maybe with a few more new covers added.
1. We're Not Making Love Anymore (1990) 2. I'll Be There (1992) 3. Without You (1993) 4. Endless Love (1994) 5. Open Arms (1995) 6. Just Be Good To Me (1996) 7. The Beautiful Ones (1997) 8. I Still Believe (1998) 9. Sweetheart (1998) 10. Do You Know Where You're Going To (1998) 11. Against All Odds (1999) 12. Out Here On My Own (2000) 13. Didn't Mean To Turn You On (2001) 14. Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (2001) 15. Bringing On The Heartbreak (2002) 16. You & I (2003) 17. With You I'm Born Again (2004) 18. I Want To Know What Love Is (2009) 19. One More Try (2014) 20. Mariah leaving Gamma (113,777)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|

I think it is for the best. Gamma hasn't produced much in the way of results for any of the artists it has partnered with. I didn't expect Mariah to have huge success with the album, but they definitely should have put in more effort after the "Type Dangerous" rollout.
Hopefully, Mariah can coordinate with Sony and Universal Music Group to ensure that Glitter gets a great 25th anniversary treatment and that we finally get the "Somebody's Ugly Daughter" release with Mariah's original vocals.

Mariah leaving Gamma (113,776)
by Bobby A from United States

MC seemed unhappy with Gamma earlier this year with no evidence of a real partnership that was promoted before HFIA dropped in September. MC's last straw was probably Larry Jackson saying no to releasing the HFIA deluxe. I feel like Gamma dropped the ball on Play This Song and In Your Feelings with their lack of promotion at radio and Valentine's Day TV ads. Both could have been bigger songs on the Hot 100. It is like Gamma poured all the money into the Type Dangerous video and didn't provide anymore money for other videos and promotion. We have been down this road before for the third time with another one album label.

Brenda K on relationship with MC (113,766)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|
|
I agree. Brenda and Arthur Baker both come across like they have chips on their shoulders in that interview. Arthur is probably jealous that Mariah went with Tommy Mottola and Sony and worked with producers other than him. Both were seeming to imply that Mariah made up portions of her "being discovered" story, but I question their motivations.
It was unrealistic for Brenda to expect so many favors from Mariah simply because Brenda was helpful to her in getting signed. Brenda was Mariah's employer, so their relationship was primarily a professional one. A former employer typically shouldn't be expecting an employee to help them out after the contractual obligations are fulfilled. Mariah has never portrayed that relationship as super close personal relationship in the manner that Brenda has, and I think there's a reason for that. Watching that interview, I also noticed that Brenda gets song titles from Mariah's first album and demo wrong - so I am not sure I completely trust her version of events.

Brenda K on relationship with MC (113,757)
by Lambi from USA

MC saying "What do you want me to do? Be indebted to you for the rest of my life?" is accurate. Like I said Mariah is smart. Brenda introducing an ultimatum was weird. "If I get you a record deal, you're gonna buy me my first house, right?" Then making her sign it, "I Mariah Carey will buy Brenda a house if I get famous" she's framing it in jest now but you don't formalize a "joke" with a written agreement unless you're hoping it holds weight later. It's so deeply manipulative.
She's another Morgan, "There wouldn't be a Mariah Carey if it wasn't for me." They're those type of people who help because they know there's a big trade. None of it was ever really from the heart because the entitlement to Mariah's wealth thereafter is ridiculous.

The Revival Of Mariah Carey (113,732)

Bill, you know Mariah needs to rest for the next six months to prepare for the rigors of pre-recording her Christmas shows. The night before every show, she needs 20 hours of sleep in a room full of humidifiers to ensure her voice can handle the difficulties of singing live for a full 120 seconds.

The real reason Mariah gets no respect (113,641)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|
|
I don't agree with putting Mariah in the same category as Joan Crawford. Crawford was abusive and cruel to family members and hangers on. Mariah's "diva antics" are not abusive/cruel; they are obnoxious at times but are usually framed in a campy, self aware manner.
As far as expecting humility, the entertainment industry is not a place where humility are cultivated or encouraged as a character trait. Just look at some of other nominees. The band Oasis, for example, and its members cannot be described as "humble". They are poster children for excesses of rock and roll, and I am sure that other inducted acts behaved in ways that make Mariah look like a school girl. Mick Jagger has eight children with five different women and used copious amounts of alcohol and drugs during his prime, but he's still in the Hall of Fame and no one's commenting on his behavior.
I personally don't care about Mariah getting into the Hall of Fame, as I think it really should be limited to "rock" acts if it's going to be called the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. But claiming that Mariah's "diva" behavior somehow disqualifies her is absurd. There are people in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame who have done far worse. Phil Spector was inducted in 1989, and he was subsequently found guilty of second degree murder.

The real reason Mariah gets no respect (113,619)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
I called this when they first nominated her this go round. I don't know what bubble a lot of you live in but I'm with the general public non-Mariah fans all the time. They think she's a joke. The lighting. The guy holding her umbrella. Her good side. We are talking about the greatest recording artist that ever lived and yet she's so afraid of her voice that she uses any topic she can to avoid talking about singing of being asked to sing impromptu. I'm thrilled that the full Divas 98 section is making its way around when Aretha asked the divas to come out there with her and sing. Celine wasn't showing off. She was doing what she was asked to and could do. Mariah came out too and sounded subpar. Oh wait she has nodules, it was too hot, it was too cold, she didn't get enough sleep, the humidifier quit without two weeks notice. All of these topics Mariah holds dear makes her look like a joke. Mariah has delivered her best album in 16 years and it hurts me that she was out there promoting it and it still didn't do well. I saw that MusicCares tribute and I was heartbroken she had to sit through that. It shows how little the industry cares for her by the lack of planning and seriousness they put into that. Joan Crawford was one of the brightest stars of the 1920s 1930s and 1940s. She died alone and penniless because of her diva antics and eccentricities. People look as her as a joke and if you ask someone about her now all they know is No More Wire Hangers. Yall will attack me for this post and the comparison. Truth is, I want Mariah to win. But it is evident why they have passed her over three times for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They don't respect her. And who do I blame for that? Mariah. Because that 20 year old girl in the outtakes in The First Vision is loveable, humble and relatable. She would be in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Article: Mariah Carey wants $27M for her NYC penthouse triplex (113,588)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|
|
My guess is that Mariah is just bored with the triplex, tired of the expenses related to its upkeep, tired of the trips up and down to the top floor, and maybe wants a place somewhere more peaceful and with more green space. New York has a lot of things going on, but she can always visit but have her home base somewhere more relaxing.
The sale makes sense to me. Mariah has been renting a lot of mansions over the last 10 or so years in Connecticut, the Hamptons, Malibu, Beverly Hills, etc., and she did purchase that mansion in Atlanta before selling a few years later. It doesn't seem like she's been staying in the triplex on a consistent basis.

The internet is full of speculation regarding her financial situation. Hopefully it's not true, I'm sure she's got people in place to oversee all her finances. Surely with all the touring she's been doing and her back catalogue she is still financially secure. I can't see her going broke, although it's happened to stars before. I am shocked she's selling this property tbh it's always been her baby. Maybe she's got to a point in life where she wants somewhere more quiet for herself and the twins, and also wants a fresh start. Maybe it's something to do with how she's been recently, maybe her health is also driving the decision. Either way I hope she's happy and that she's doing it for herself rather than any financial burden. It's not that long since she remortgaged the property.

Watch what you say Butterfly Returns. NYC is full of action and magic. It's alive in a way that it is personified and it feels like you wake up, shower, dine, work and date it. There's a reason why the country is obsessed with it. Hit songs have gone to number one with it. Every New Year's most people welcome resolutions and new beginnings with it. I lived there four years and regret leaving every day. Sorry for the rant webmaster but uh yeah we can't talk bad about the city that gave us MC.

Atlanta is a great city, so I wouldn't blame Mariah for heading there. In my opinion, New York City is overrated, stressful and far too expensive for what you pay. Mariah could get a much nicer (and larger) home in Atlanta for probably a fraction of the cost and it would not cost so much to maintain it. I'm thinking about a move to Atlanta myself, so maybe I'll see Mariah around lol.

A full-throated defense of Glitter (113,537)
by TheButterflyReturns from United States
| |
|
|
I found it so gratifying to see "Loverboy" rocket up the charts from #60 to #2 after the fans turned out to buy the single and support our girl.
Mariah and her team made a lot of mistakes with Glitter. I think "Wisegirls" should have been Mariah's first major film role rather than "Glitter". She was quite good in "Wisegirls" and definitely held her own with Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters. You could tell she was much more relaxed on that set than for "Glitter".
"Glitter" turned out the way it did due to a number of factors. Number one, they veered away from Kate Lanier's script and relied a lot on improvisation during the filming. Number two, they should have picked a more seasoned director than Vondie Curtis-Hall - he had only directed one film before "Glitter" (Gridlock'd) and I think his style was not a match for what Mariah needed. A better choice would have been Brian Gibson, who did the Tina Turner biopic based on a script by Kate Lanier. Number three, Max Beesley was the wrong lead male actor to play Dice. He's a nice guy, but they should have picked someone with a higher profile. I don't think Terrence Howard was the right person either, but they needed a bigger name. Number four, the sabotage of the "Loverboy" single probably meant that they had to cut out footage featuring the "Firecracker" version in post-production because the song was her character's first big hit in the movie. The movie was delayed from early 2001 to Summer 2001 because of it, and that was before Mariah's personal struggles in July/August. They had to redo movie trailers and re-work the soundtrack album because of it.
Whitney had it much easier with "The Bodyguard" than Mariah did with "Glitter". Whitney only wrote one song on that soundtrack, only recorded six of the 13 songs included, and had Kevin Costner as a director and co-lead right around the time of "Dances with Wolves". The film had already been in development since the 70s, while "Glitter" was something that Mariah worked closely on with Kate Lanier and others throughout the development process. Whitney did not have to work for "The Bodyguard" the way that Mariah did for "Glitter".
Whitney was a decent actress, but I disagree that her acting in "The Bodyguard" is that much better than Mariah's in "Glitter". "Waiting to Exhale" was definitely a better showcase of Whitney's acting talents.

I love Glitter, the movie, the soundtrack, the singles. I must have purchased 200 copies of "Loverboy" in that push for the Hot 100 fight with "Bootylicious". I had 20 copies of the CD (including my three copies reserved in advance from Coconuts Music Store). I've seen the movie, rented it, bought the DVD when it came out, and even got the VHS - I supported it like crazy.
I hope we get some fun additional stuff.

Glitter - my wish for MC in 2026 (113,520)

Dude, it's a difference of opinion. You all need to chill out. It's truly bizarre to see such an extreme reaction to me and others saying something as anodyne as "Hey, maybe Glitter deserved a better shot."
I'm not saying "Glitter" was a good movie, but plenty of other not-so-good/bad movies are successful at the box office. I'm just saying there were a lot of things working against it, that maybe it didn't deserve the polarized negative reviews it received, and that maybe it deserved a chance to perform a little better in theaters. I also feel bad that Mariah had so many personal and professional obstacles and struggles during the 1997-2001 period when it was in production. I bought multiple copies of the "Loverboy" single, went out to buy the album on 9/11, and rented the movie when it came out as a demonstration of support her.
I'm very much looking forward to a deluxe edition of the album and maybe some extra footage and behind the scenes content from the movie.

Thank you for saying it because some people here seem to be on a group hallucination at this point.
Reality: Glitter is a solid album tragically trapped inside a corny, awkward, secondhand embarrassment movie.
Delusion: Saying Glitter and The Bodyguard are even remotely in the same league.
Whitney wasn't Meryl Streep but she could act. Mariah absolutely could not. Trying to put her Glitter performance on the same level as Whitney in The Bodyguard is like saying a school talent show and Broadway are basically the same thing because both had a mike.
And I love Mariah down, but some of you defend Glitter like you're trying to overturn a Supreme Court ruling. Enough.

Yeah, but her ability to promote the movie and the album was severely limited by the fact that she was hospitalized twice for bipolar II disorder - once in Connecticut in July/August 2001 and once in Los Angeles in September 2001. These hospital stays directly conflicted with the rollout for the movie and soundtrack.
As I said, the movie is not great. It was a commercial vehicle to launch her into the movie industry so she could move into more respectable roles like the one in "Wisegirls".
And, yes, Webmaster, the acting in "Glitter" is on par with "The Bodyguard" and "Mahogany" - both of which received mixed to negative reviews but were redeemed by having hits from the respective soundtracks.

According to Wikipedia, Glitter opened in 1,202 theaters while The Bodyguard opened in 1,717 theaters. Although less than The Bodyguard but Glitter wasn't a "limited release" in any sense.

The film had such a limited release due to Mariah's health problems in 2001 that I think very few people saw it. So I don't really trust the reviews entirely. I don't think it's great film by any stretch, but it's certainly on par with "Mahogany" or "The Bodyguard" as a vehicle for a recording artist branching out into the movies. Both of those films rece. It plays like a popcorn film, not a film that would be in the running for an Best Picture Oscar or Golden Globe.
I think the critics were out to get Mariah because she had been so successful as a recording artist in the 1990s and because people are generally skeptical of recording artists branching out in the movies and vice versa. There were a lot of factors and delays working against Mariah. Remember, "Heartbreaker" was supposed to be the lead single rather than "Loverboy", and "Loverboy" was further delayed due to the sabotage.

"The movie is not as bad as the media sensationalized it back then." This is what Wikipedia writes: On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 6% of 86 critics' reviews are positive. The website's consensus reads: "Glitter is a hodgepodge of movie cliches and bad acting that's sure to generate unintentional laughs. Unfortunately, the movie is not bad enough to be good." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 14 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating "overwhelming dislike". Upon release, it was widely deemed one of the worst films ever made. Mariah won a Razzie for worst actress.
I love the soundtrack and think they should do something special for its 25th anniversary, but they should forget about the movie.

I had one more "Glitter" wish for this year:
4. A Vegas residency built around the soundtrack and the film called "#JusticeForGlitter". And maybe she can even poke fun at the TRL appearance with some skits interspersed.
5. Long form podcasts with Mariah, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Kate Lanier about the evolution of the film.
I honestly want 2026 to be heavily focused on "Glitter" because I'm interested to know more about how it evolved from the grittier "All That Glitters" treatment to the watered down final product released in 2001. We all know about the sabotage of the "Loverboy" single, but there's obviously more that we don't know. "Lillie's Blues" was in the movie, but it would be cool to hear a studio recording of it. The Mariah Carey Wiki mentions song titles "Glitter" and "Royal Tones" and states that Mariah worked on six songs with Stevie J for the movie. I remember a bunch of other rumored song titles that floated around the internet in the early 2000s. I'm also interested to know if there's a demo version of the song in which she planned to sample "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6.

My wishes for Mariah in 2026:
1. Epic deluxe 25th anniversary re-release of the "Glitter" soundtrack with any and all unreleased material recorded during the 1997-2001 period of its production. There has to be more than just "Loverboy (Firecracker Original)" and "Out Here On My Own".
2. Epic deluxe 25th anniversary re-release of the "Glitter" movie with expanded special features, behind the scenes footage, documentaries, deleted scenes, all music videos, etc. on Blu-Ray.
3. Release all remixes and alternate versions of "Loverboy", "Never Too Far", "Never Too Far/Hero Medley", "Don't Stop (Funkin' for Jamaica)" and any of the additional singles that were slated to be released.

Lame photos? (113,496)

My guess is that some of the less intriguing single covers came about due to budgetary constraints, especially for "Here for It All" singles. To me, it seems like they spent almost the entire budget on the "Type Dangerous" video. Which "Crybaby" single cover are you referring to? I remember seeing several - and, of course, that song was included on the double A-side single release of CTTA in the US.

Lame photos? (113,485)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

I've got to ask: why does MC choose lame photos for some of her singles cover art like she did for Nothing is Impossible? She's got better, more electric photos on her social media. She's done it with Shake it Off, It's Like That was unreal and unexpected, With You was so unique and gave Someday vibes. But then we have Its a Wrap, CryBaby, and I Don't as examples of lame. Literally just smash one of her recent insta photos on the single art work and run with it, she's gorgeous and everyone knows how funny she can be. Use that sparkle and glitter girl, not lame emotionless head shots that tell me nothing about the song.

I was thinking today after hearing T.I.'s Let 'Em Know that MC needs to get back into the studio with Pharrell this year. I know he can give MC a fresh beat that could make Hot 100 radio play MC again.
1. MC's needs another DJ Mustard collaboration. 2. I would love another collaboration with Ariana Grande produced by Nova Wav. 3. Where is our long overdue JD collaboration? It could be the song that becomes her 20th #1 song easily with a Chris Brown and Justin Beiber feature. 4. MC needs a movie theme song next year.

Charmbracelet to Caution vocals compared (113,451)

Perspectives or information that reflect poorly on Mariah are not ipso facto "misinformation". Mariah's not perfect, and we should not pretend that she is. Celebrities and public figures work painstakingly to project an image of perfection or to paint themselves as victims when something reflects poorly on them, but critical consumers of media should always be skeptical of this.
Stella and company should not have brought those lawsuits, but Mariah put herself in compromising positions and was behaving very erratically in 2016. She seemed to be having some sort of manic episode. I love Mariah's music and care about her wellbeing, but she has to take proper care of herself if she has a condition like bipolar disorder.

Her bipolar disorder didn't cause her breakdown and she didn't have an incident or hospitalizations in 2016. She told the public because Stella was trying to blackmail her and threatened to make her sound crazy. She was already telling the press that Mariah was expecting to see Michael Jackson come to dinner. That is not a feature of BiPolar disorder. You guys need to stop making things up and spreading misinformation as a pastime. It's awful of Stella to weaponize mental health and worse when the fans do it. Mariah has been clear about being tired and wanting a break from touring.

Mariah disclosed the bipolar diagnosis because she, unfortunately, chose to hire and work with Stella and displayed really erratic behavior in front of the wrong people (aka Stella and company). Stella was wrong to weaponize mental illness, but based on what happened in 2001 and seeing the footage from the reality show, I definitely think there is some truth to what she said. Mariah's assistant from that period, Lianna, also confirmed it.
All you have to do is watch the "Mariah's World" series to see a glimpse of the erratic behavior and substance use - she and others were on camera with cannabis use, which is known to exacerbate existing psychiatric disorders. She had staff members taking semi-nude and nude photographs of her to send to Bryan Tanaka... while she was still engaged to James Packer. Mariah was an absolute mess during that period.
