The Revival Of Mariah Carey (113,732) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
Bill, you know Mariah needs to rest for the next six months to prepare for the rigors of pre-recording her Christmas shows. The night before every show, she needs 20 hours of sleep in a room full of humidifiers to ensure her voice can handle the difficulties of singing live for a full 120 seconds.

The real reason Mariah gets no respect (113,641) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
I don't agree with putting Mariah in the same category as Joan Crawford. Crawford was abusive and cruel to family members and hangers on. Mariah's "diva antics" are not abusive/cruel; they are obnoxious at times but are usually framed in a campy, self aware manner.

As far as expecting humility, the entertainment industry is not a place where humility are cultivated or encouraged as a character trait. Just look at some of other nominees. The band Oasis, for example, and its members cannot be described as "humble". They are poster children for excesses of rock and roll, and I am sure that other inducted acts behaved in ways that make Mariah look like a school girl. Mick Jagger has eight children with five different women and used copious amounts of alcohol and drugs during his prime, but he's still in the Hall of Fame and no one's commenting on his behavior.

I personally don't care about Mariah getting into the Hall of Fame, as I think it really should be limited to "rock" acts if it's going to be called the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. But claiming that Mariah's "diva" behavior somehow disqualifies her is absurd. There are people in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame who have done far worse. Phil Spector was inducted in 1989, and he was subsequently found guilty of second degree murder.

Article: Mariah Carey wants $27M for her NYC penthouse triplex (113,588) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
My guess is that Mariah is just bored with the triplex, tired of the expenses related to its upkeep, tired of the trips up and down to the top floor, and maybe wants a place somewhere more peaceful and with more green space. New York has a lot of things going on, but she can always visit but have her home base somewhere more relaxing.

The sale makes sense to me. Mariah has been renting a lot of mansions over the last 10 or so years in Connecticut, the Hamptons, Malibu, Beverly Hills, etc., and she did purchase that mansion in Atlanta before selling a few years later. It doesn't seem like she's been staying in the triplex on a consistent basis.

Yeah, this is just a difference of opinion. I lived and worked in New York as well and didn't have a great experience. I appreciate its importance culturally and to Mariah, but it's definitely not for everyone and not everyone has to like it.

Atlanta is a great city, so I wouldn't blame Mariah for heading there. In my opinion, New York City is overrated, stressful and far too expensive for what you pay. Mariah could get a much nicer (and larger) home in Atlanta for probably a fraction of the cost and it would not cost so much to maintain it. I'm thinking about a move to Atlanta myself, so maybe I'll see Mariah around lol.

A full-throated defense of Glitter (113,537) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
I found it so gratifying to see "Loverboy" rocket up the charts from #60 to #2 after the fans turned out to buy the single and support our girl.

Mariah and her team made a lot of mistakes with Glitter. I think "Wisegirls" should have been Mariah's first major film role rather than "Glitter". She was quite good in "Wisegirls" and definitely held her own with Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters. You could tell she was much more relaxed on that set than for "Glitter".

"Glitter" turned out the way it did due to a number of factors. Number one, they veered away from Kate Lanier's script and relied a lot on improvisation during the filming. Number two, they should have picked a more seasoned director than Vondie Curtis-Hall - he had only directed one film before "Glitter" (Gridlock'd) and I think his style was not a match for what Mariah needed. A better choice would have been Brian Gibson, who did the Tina Turner biopic based on a script by Kate Lanier. Number three, Max Beesley was the wrong lead male actor to play Dice. He's a nice guy, but they should have picked someone with a higher profile. I don't think Terrence Howard was the right person either, but they needed a bigger name. Number four, the sabotage of the "Loverboy" single probably meant that they had to cut out footage featuring the "Firecracker" version in post-production because the song was her character's first big hit in the movie. The movie was delayed from early 2001 to Summer 2001 because of it, and that was before Mariah's personal struggles in July/August. They had to redo movie trailers and re-work the soundtrack album because of it.

Whitney had it much easier with "The Bodyguard" than Mariah did with "Glitter". Whitney only wrote one song on that soundtrack, only recorded six of the 13 songs included, and had Kevin Costner as a director and co-lead right around the time of "Dances with Wolves". The film had already been in development since the 70s, while "Glitter" was something that Mariah worked closely on with Kate Lanier and others throughout the development process. Whitney did not have to work for "The Bodyguard" the way that Mariah did for "Glitter".

Whitney was a decent actress, but I disagree that her acting in "The Bodyguard" is that much better than Mariah's in "Glitter". "Waiting to Exhale" was definitely a better showcase of Whitney's acting talents.

Glitter - my wish for MC in 2026 (113,520) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
Dude, it's a difference of opinion. You all need to chill out. It's truly bizarre to see such an extreme reaction to me and others saying something as anodyne as "Hey, maybe Glitter deserved a better shot."

I'm not saying "Glitter" was a good movie, but plenty of other not-so-good/bad movies are successful at the box office. I'm just saying there were a lot of things working against it, that maybe it didn't deserve the polarized negative reviews it received, and that maybe it deserved a chance to perform a little better in theaters. I also feel bad that Mariah had so many personal and professional obstacles and struggles during the 1997-2001 period when it was in production. I bought multiple copies of the "Loverboy" single, went out to buy the album on 9/11, and rented the movie when it came out as a demonstration of support her.

I'm very much looking forward to a deluxe edition of the album and maybe some extra footage and behind the scenes content from the movie.

Glitter - my wish for MC in 2026 (113,505) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
Yeah, but her ability to promote the movie and the album was severely limited by the fact that she was hospitalized twice for bipolar II disorder - once in Connecticut in July/August 2001 and once in Los Angeles in September 2001. These hospital stays directly conflicted with the rollout for the movie and soundtrack.

As I said, the movie is not great. It was a commercial vehicle to launch her into the movie industry so she could move into more respectable roles like the one in "Wisegirls".

And, yes, Webmaster, the acting in "Glitter" is on par with "The Bodyguard" and "Mahogany" - both of which received mixed to negative reviews but were redeemed by having hits from the respective soundtracks.

Glitter - my wish for MC in 2026 (113,502) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
The film had such a limited release due to Mariah's health problems in 2001 that I think very few people saw it. So I don't really trust the reviews entirely. I don't think it's great film by any stretch, but it's certainly on par with "Mahogany" or "The Bodyguard" as a vehicle for a recording artist branching out into the movies. Both of those films rece. It plays like a popcorn film, not a film that would be in the running for an Best Picture Oscar or Golden Globe.

I think the critics were out to get Mariah because she had been so successful as a recording artist in the 1990s and because people are generally skeptical of recording artists branching out in the movies and vice versa. There were a lot of factors and delays working against Mariah. Remember, "Heartbreaker" was supposed to be the lead single rather than "Loverboy", and "Loverboy" was further delayed due to the sabotage.

My wish for MC in 2026 (113,497) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
I had one more "Glitter" wish for this year:

4. A Vegas residency built around the soundtrack and the film called "#JusticeForGlitter". And maybe she can even poke fun at the TRL appearance with some skits interspersed.

5. Long form podcasts with Mariah, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Kate Lanier about the evolution of the film.

I honestly want 2026 to be heavily focused on "Glitter" because I'm interested to know more about how it evolved from the grittier "All That Glitters" treatment to the watered down final product released in 2001. We all know about the sabotage of the "Loverboy" single, but there's obviously more that we don't know. "Lillie's Blues" was in the movie, but it would be cool to hear a studio recording of it. The Mariah Carey Wiki mentions song titles "Glitter" and "Royal Tones" and states that Mariah worked on six songs with Stevie J for the movie. I remember a bunch of other rumored song titles that floated around the internet in the early 2000s. I'm also interested to know if there's a demo version of the song in which she planned to sample "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6.

Lame photos? (113,496) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
My guess is that some of the less intriguing single covers came about due to budgetary constraints, especially for "Here for It All" singles. To me, it seems like they spent almost the entire budget on the "Type Dangerous" video. Which "Crybaby" single cover are you referring to? I remember seeing several - and, of course, that song was included on the double A-side single release of CTTA in the US.

My wish for MC in 2026 (113,483) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
My wishes for Mariah in 2026:

1. Epic deluxe 25th anniversary re-release of the "Glitter" soundtrack with any and all unreleased material recorded during the 1997-2001 period of its production. There has to be more than just "Loverboy (Firecracker Original)" and "Out Here On My Own".

2. Epic deluxe 25th anniversary re-release of the "Glitter" movie with expanded special features, behind the scenes footage, documentaries, deleted scenes, all music videos, etc. on Blu-Ray.

3. Release all remixes and alternate versions of "Loverboy", "Never Too Far", "Never Too Far/Hero Medley", "Don't Stop (Funkin' for Jamaica)" and any of the additional singles that were slated to be released.

Charmbracelet to Caution vocals compared (113,451) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
Perspectives or information that reflect poorly on Mariah are not ipso facto "misinformation". Mariah's not perfect, and we should not pretend that she is. Celebrities and public figures work painstakingly to project an image of perfection or to paint themselves as victims when something reflects poorly on them, but critical consumers of media should always be skeptical of this.

Stella and company should not have brought those lawsuits, but Mariah put herself in compromising positions and was behaving very erratically in 2016. She seemed to be having some sort of manic episode. I love Mariah's music and care about her wellbeing, but she has to take proper care of herself if she has a condition like bipolar disorder.

Charmbracelet to Caution vocals compared (113,450) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
Mariah disclosed the bipolar diagnosis because she, unfortunately, chose to hire and work with Stella and displayed really erratic behavior in front of the wrong people (aka Stella and company). Stella was wrong to weaponize mental illness, but based on what happened in 2001 and seeing the footage from the reality show, I definitely think there is some truth to what she said. Mariah's assistant from that period, Lianna, also confirmed it.

All you have to do is watch the "Mariah's World" series to see a glimpse of the erratic behavior and substance use - she and others were on camera with cannabis use, which is known to exacerbate existing psychiatric disorders. She had staff members taking semi-nude and nude photographs of her to send to Bryan Tanaka... while she was still engaged to James Packer. Mariah was an absolute mess during that period.

Charmbracelet to Caution vocals compared (113,446) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
I disagree with the "ditch the bipolar meds" suggestion. Mariah has bipolar disorder and has been hospitalized at least twice because of it (once in 2001 and once in 2016 which prompted the disclosure of the Bipolar diagnosis). People living with bipolar disorder really have to stay on the medications in order to remain stable, or they have to make substantial lifestyle changes.

Cutting out alcohol, cutting out other recreational drugs (i.e. cannabis), developing better sleep hygiene, healthy eating, regular exercise, working with a vocal couch, etc. would likely offset any vocal issues caused by medications. Mariah seemed pretty disciplined during the Charmbracelet World Tour, so we know she is capable of pulling it together while using bipolar medications. At that point, she was in good shape physically, the pre-recording use was minimal, and she seemed to be taking good care of herself.

My worry is that Mariah may have gotten hooked on opioids or other prescription medications after injuring herself during the 2013 "#Beautiful" remix music video shoot. As much I disliked Stella's impact on Mariah's career, I do wonder about her claims that Mariah has a substance abuse problem.

Glitter at 25: I love it then, I love it now (113,403) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
I think many refer to it as an album because all of the songs are Mariah songs (some with guest artists featured). In contrast, "The Bodyguard" soundtrack contained about six songs by Whitney and seven additional songs by other artists. Soundtracks are most often compilations of songs from various artists (but not always). I remember Mariah originally planned to record six songs for the soundtrack but then decided to do twelve, which made it more like a proper studio album than a soundtrack.

I'm glad Mariah is embracing the soundtrack and the movie. The movie is not the best, but I still think it holds its own in the context of mainstream films by recording artists crossing over into movies. It has a fun, escapist vibe that contrasts with the more serious role in "Wisegirls".

I just wish Mariah had been able to put out "Loverboy" with the "Firecracker" sample and to properly promote "Never Too Far" as the follow-up single. Both could have been substantial hits and would have helped overshadow the shortcomings of the movie.

Glitter at 25: I love it then, I love it now (113,397) by TheButterflyReturns from United States
I'm super excited for the 25th anniversary of "Glitter". I remember venturing out on 9/11 to purchase it and having the "Loverboy" CD single cover taped inside of my locker in middle school. I loved that Fox Family documentary about the making of the film and soundtrack. I loved Mariah's campy visits to TRL in the Rainbow and Glitter eras. All of it made my teenage gay boy heart so happy.

I was very intrigued to see that both the soundtrack album and the movie have been pulled off from streaming services. This must mean that we are getting deluxe/alternate/unreleased material related to both the soundtrack *and* the movie. I have a feeling that there are going to be some epic surprises in store for us. Mariah was working on "Glitter" basically from 1997-2001, so I can only imagine what is buried in the vault.
