Asia-exclusive album as next step? (74,884)

I know Mariah has had a commercial apocalypse in the States, which is a shame. I still love "I Don't" and listening to Me. I Am Mariah, I'm stunned that I previously thought it to be a lesser album than her previous works. The sequencing is truly brilliant and the fact that she could create such beautiful vocal inflections on "Thirsty" proves her artistry. Secretly I feel that Beyonce was inspired by that album (specifically Thirsty) as well as Solange (Cranes in the Sky steals from Stay the Night). But I have a feeling that Mariah's next step should be to do an Asia-exclusive album since her fanbase is still huge in Asia. I listened recently to IU's new single "Palette" and I can't help to see the Mariah's influence by the stacked vocals and quirky lyrics. I live in Korea, grew up in the States, and my experience here has been a Mariah love fest in strange ways. I heard "Make it Look Good" at a convenience store, "Don't Stop Funkin' 4 Jamaica" at a popular department store, "You Don't Know What to Do" playing outside in a busy district, and every time I go to a karaoke room, I can always find Mariah rarities such as Outside, Close My Eyes, everything from the Glitter Soundtrack, yet... Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Madonna and Beyonce don't have an extensive catalogue available even in Seoul karaoke rooms, only the major major hits. I mean, I can rarely find New Order's Blue Monday or Culture Club's Do You Really Want to Hurt Me. Yet for Mariah, I can find most of her catalogue even in karaoke rooms in the boondocks of Korea. I feel like she should do something akin to what Mary did with the London Sessions and maybe do a "Korea Sessions" and branch out. Her albums have always done well on the Gaon Charts and BTS's cover of #Beautiful was extremely popular here, even to the point where you can no longer watch Mariah's original on VeVo without disrespectful comments saying BTS covered it better. Just a suggestion. She is the only current American artist to have conquered Asia. I know the horde always say that Mariah is not an international star like Madonna since she didn't conquer Europe, but that is simply an ethnocentric notion purporting Europe to be the center of the world. Asia has a large population and has been rising in influence. Come on Stella, make this happen.

Miguel's Rogue Waves (60,233)
by Jeff from United States

Yay. Miguel takes a hint from Mariah after working closely and extensively with her a couple years back. He basically created an album with her with all those remixes. Now his newly released Rogue Waves EP, all remixes of his brilliant song "Waves" reconstructing the songs to better heights, shows Mariah's influence in the game of remixes. My favorite: Waves (Tame Impala Remix). Imagine Mariah creating a psychedelic soul album next like soul singers in the 60s and 70s did? Teaming up with Miguel and Tame Impala to create a Rufus like concept album? Her rawer vocals now could take electric guitar riffs and the instrumentals could create more space for her to catch her breath and have stronger vocal moments instead of clinging onto her rap-breathy verses (which I personally love). Or she can leave her producers momentarily and work with indie producers and songwriters who admire what she does like Grimes or How To Dress Well. This way, she can avoid the EDM trend and garner more critical acclaim. We know how critics love to bash Mariah. Take a look at these interviews of Grimes and How to Dress Well showing Mariah love.

Mariah's performance (40,120)
by Jeff from United States

I really didn't see the big of a deal over this performance. When her voice gave off, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Watch Tamar Braxton live on Soul Train Awards earlier this week for some perspective on live performances. Even Ariana Grande in her debut year made a public announcement that she hurt her voice. Adele almost damaged her voice. Mariah held on to her "perfect" vocals for six solid years. For all the criticism on Mariah's personal habits, at least she quit smoking before entering the industry as Adele was not able to. I do feel anxious when hearing Mariah will perform live since you never know how it will turn out. But with twins (when Mariah was single, she had the luxury to sleep for 15 hours in a steam room) and a record label who doesn't care to promote you, Mariah is probably exhausted. The fights behind the scenes will come to light one day and we can look back with more perspective. Remember in 2009 when people complained about her live performances? Mariah did not mention her miscarriage then. The Butterfly era inaugurated Mariah's "vocal decline", but that was the era when she had to fight the most for her ideas. She was up against a board room of executives who wanted to control her. I respect that Mariah stood her ground, but fighting against a corporation is exhausting. Look at Kanye's recent interviews and you'll see the anger artists feel behind the scenes.
