Still can't get over Loverboy (Firecracker) (96,639) by John from USA
I have been listening to this song (along with "Here We Go Around Again" and "All I Live For") nonstop since The Rarities came out. There is zero doubt in my mind that this is the true version of Loverboy we were meant to get and would have gone straight to #1. It is truly in the league of her incredible 90s lead singles that we were used to at the time. I still love the Candy version, but the Firecracker version goes so much harder, and that chorus though? The chorus pops so much more on this version, and I love the "hey loverboy" that she says in the background throughout the song. And I also love that the song features no one and is just her. Pure pop perfection, and one of her best uptempo songs ever.

Re: Firecracker Loverboy vs Cameo Loverboy vs Remix (96,370) by John from USA
I have to echo what someone else said on here. I remember traveling when "Loverboy" came out in 2001. I had to walk like 2 miles to the nearest record store near my hotel to get the CD single. I hadn't heard the song on radio as radio wasn't really playing it. It was the first Mariah song that I had to sorta initially force myself to like. I did end up really loving the Candy version of "Loverboy", but always wished the vocals and chorus were stronger.

The Firecracker version is the first Mariah song since maybe "It's Like That" that I loved upon first listen. I have been playing it non-stop since The Rarities came out. It would have been in instant #1 back in 2001. The intro/outro are amazing and sort of tie the song to the same vein as Fantasy and ABMB. And the chorus. So much better than the Cameo version. The chorus really pops and goes much harder in the Firecracker version. I also love that it doesn't feature a rapper or anyone else - just a catchy as hell upbeat Mariah song that would have been in the same class as her lead singles throughout the 90s.

I know Mariah says she thinks they did her a favor because she prefer the Candy version, but I think she may just be saying that to save face. The Firecracker version is far superior.

What the hell is going on with Mariah? (78,458) by John from USA
I'm actually embarrassed to be a fan of hers right now. I have been a fan of her for twenty years. I had always knew the name "Mariah Carey" starting around the Daydream era, but became hooked during the Butterfly era. I've seen her live on all her tours from Rainbow and on. Played the crap out of "I Don't", still love that song. Everytime Mariah used to have a new single out (especially a lead single), it would be epic. She'd have great videos, promote the hell out of it, perform it everywhere, actually sing live, give proper interviews, come across as hard-working/likeable/talk about her new album. I feel like that woman is completely gone. I have no idea who this woman is now. I completely understand we all have blunders, but she has not been able to pull it together since the E=MC2 era. I feel like that era was our last chance for a proper and successful era, but after TMB, we had the wrong single choices, she fell off the face of the Earth and abandoned that album (her marriage to Nick really isn't an excuse, because that was a great album with many potential hits) and her career has never recovered. And it's at the point now where I don't even think Mariah is capable of having a Cher-like comeback with just one solid hit single (even if the album it's on doesn't sell well itself). I feel like the general public just resents her, and I'm almost starting to resent her because I feel like it's all self-imposed and I know the quality of an artist/performer she once was. If she is truly having physical or mental health problems, then I definitely do sympathize, but she needs to stop showing up to things, take some time out of the spotlight, and address them head on. I am terrified that even if she does do this, we're already at the point of no return. Radio won't touch her and the general public and even other celebs have lost virtually all respect for her. She could do no wrong in the 90s, and she had a chance in the 00's to reclaim a certain level of that success (she did for a while with TEOM and TMB), but E=MC2 started the downfall of one of the greatest artists of all time. But as she said during that speech about Whitney, "We'll always have the music."

Mariah - please come to your senses (73,265) by John from USA
I feel like Mariah has really lost her way. To me, she hasn't really cared about her career since the beginning of E=MC2. To think if that era had been handled better, at the very least, we could have had two more top 5 singles from that album. But she chose to fall off the face of Earth right after meeting Nick (I remember she cancelled so many public appearances after TMB), and her career has never quite recovered. I feel like E=MC2 was her last chance for an epic era (maybe not as epic as TEOM, but much stronger than what actually happened). She looked amazing, the general public was into her, she had great tracks, full label support. MOAIA, we're lucky we got a top 10 hit off of that album. It basically died right after Obsessed peaked that fall. I mean, if Mariah doesn't care, why should we? If I were her, I would have already disappeared from the public for about a year, get into E=MC2 shape, and come back strong with crazy promo. I feel like in addition to being lazy, she's delusional thinking that Stella is good for her career. I feel like she doesn't have much time left before she becomes a permanent cartoon character in the eyes of the general public. We as fans know she is so much better than this. But she needs to really get it together soon, or just straight up retire if she doesn't "care enough" about her career and legacy. I've virtually abandoned all hope for another hit single (but I do like "I Don't" quite a lot actually), at least we'll always have the memories

How do we solve a problem like Mariah? (72,670) by John from USA
I've been asking myself this question over and over for the last several years. I agree with many of you on here. This current era we are in right now is much worse than the Glitter era. Yeah, she had the breakdown and was flopping, but at least Loverboy was a (fake) #2 hit and the general public still respected her voice for the most part. It's sad that Mariah is sorta turning into a Kardashian. She's literally almost a different person than she was in the 90s and early 00's. It's like everything changed right after TMB and E=MC2 both had great starts. Everything after TMB (with the exceptions, arguably, of Obsessed and Beautiful) has been a disaster. I think Mariah should have taken an extended break from the public eye after MIAMTEC flopped, dealt with the divorce and her shoulder, then come back late last year/early this year with a banging bod and great new music. But I feel like she'll never do that. She seems lazy and like she just doesn't care about her music career anymore. I feel like she's lost in a way. And I've been a huge fan for almost 20 years since I bought the Honey CD single. Wish to God Mariah could find her direction. I'd love another hit single or two from her. It's a sad, sad time to be a Mariah fan.

Re: When is enough really enough? (64,213) (64,244) by John from USA
I really agree with this. I don't know what's happened to Mariah. I remember she used to be so connected with her fans. I remember she used to leave voicemails on her website back in the day. Now it seems she has people tweeting pics of her just living large around the world. I'm glad she has Roc and Roe and I'm sure she's a good mom, but damn I feel like Nick Cannon had a large part in destroying her career. E=MC2 started off so strong, but once she met him, she fell off the face of Earth and basically abandoned that album. I think her whole relationship and marriage to Nick just really cheapened her image (because Nick's image was never great). What the hell happened to the music? Music seems so tertiary to her "career" these days.

E=MC2 (52,029) by John from USA
I'm happy to see E=MC2 getting some love. It's in my top 3 favorite Mariah albums. I'm still not over that massive missed opportunity. If only she was as focused after TMB as she was during TEOM. I'm cautiously optimistic for her future, but I sometimes feel like E=MC2 was her last chance for an epic era. She had the TEOM afterglow, the general public was on her side, she was smoking hot, and radio was supportive (she was still under 40, we know how radio basically ignores women once they hit about 40 lol). And the album, while contrived, had the hits. Ugh I still get so mad thinking about it lol.

Katy Perry / Mariah mis-quote / Madonna feud (45,586) by John from USA
Mariah never said "Whenever I watch TV and see those poor, starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean, I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff." She has taken a lot of crap for this quote over the years, and I can't remember the source, but this was debunked. Also, as far as Katy Perry, I think Katy is kind of an airhead. Sometimes I don't even realize she knows what she's saying. There's a quote in one of her songs where she says "Failing real hard at Mariah karaoke." I actually don't think she's a hater. I mean, if she was gonna mock Mariah in a video, the way I see it, Mariah must have clearly had an impact on her to acknowledge her (even like that). And yes, Mariah dissed Madonna, but Madonna said some very mean things about her in an article. Madonna said things to the effect that Mariah wasn't very bright and that she'd rather kill herself than be Mariah. Mariah herself in an early interview (Music Box era?) said "I see Madonna at parties, and she smiles and waves, but behind my back I know it's a different story." Madonna was a bully to her, and Mariah shut her down. Madonna deserved it, if you ask me.

Radio / over 40 (45,475) by John from USA
Guys, I didn't say that radio never plays songs from women over 40. I just meant that it becomes much more of an uphill battle at that point. Cher managed to get a hit with "Believe" because, in my opinion, she got very lucky (right song at the right time). All subsequent songs from her have flopped at radio. Madonna's last radio hit was "4 Minutes" in 2008, but I believe that was mainly because of Justin Timberlake. "Gimme all your lovin" was a top 10 hit, but only due to strong downloads (I never heard that song on the radio). Again, not saying any of these women or Mariah can't have more hits after 40, but I think we can all agree that women over 40 have to work much harder. Doesn't make it right (because it's not), it just makes it so.

E=MC2 (45,466) by John from USA
I'm really enjoying all the love that E=MC2 is getting. E=MC2 and Slaydream are actually my two favorite Mariah albums of all time (MIAMETC and Music Box/Butterfly follow closely), and I have always felt that E=MC2 is one of her most commercial and polished records. I'm saddened to say that I truly think that E=MC2 was Mariah's last chance for an epic era. She had the TEOM afterglow, the general public was on her side, radio was playing her, and she looked absolutely amazing (probably the best she ever had). Not to mention that she hadn't yet crossed the line that is to enter into her 40s, which we know is taboo for radio airplay (for women, anyway). That era, in my opinion, was put in its grave too quickly due to lousy single choices and her getting married and falling off the face of the Earth. I love Mariah, and always will, but I still haven't gotten over that era. I'm not sure her career will ever recover from TEOM/early E=MC2 status. E=MC2 had everything going for it, and the hits were there. Such a damn missed opportunity. Just like MIAMTEC., but at least E=MC2 had a nice start, and was fun for us while it lasted.

Me... I am John. A highly embarrassed Mariah fan (44,648) by John from USA
Jaker20 and webmaster, I completely agree with both of you guys. I think that record sales with zero promotion can really show you where an artist stands. The first week the true fans come out, and the second week, the stability of the sales (or lack thereof) shows the general public's level of interest. That said, even with zero promo and no hit singles, these sales are catastrophic for an artist of Mariah's caliber. I don't care how long she's been in the game and the fact that sales for an artist decline past their prime. Barbra Streisand was long past her prime in 2009 when her album beat out Memoirs and debuted at number 1 with no singles or promo from her. That shows she has a solid fanbase and respect from the general public. Honestly, at this point, I would say Mariah should just let this record flop and go back to the drawing board. I don't see a single saving it, radio isn't going to play it because the album is too plagued with messiness. She needs to deal with whatever personal matters she has, get in better shape (since she always insists on dressing sexy), and have all her ducks in a row before dropping an album. She should know all of this by now, but clearly, she doesn't. It's sad, really. I'm truly embarrassed to be a fan right now. I am a true lamb and will always buy her music, but these sales are ruining her reputation and brand, and ending her career earlier than it had to.

Brad from USA (44,620) by John from USA
I couldn't have said it better myself. I always love it when the "true lambs" get angry at those of us lambs (and we are lambs) who are upset with the lack of commercial success. Do they not realize that Mariah herself always uses her past success (18 #1 hits, 200 million records sold, etc) as part of her hype and brand? I mean, she used it on AI to shade Nicki Minaj. Mariah really hasn't had any sizeable success since the beginning of the E=MC2 era (maybe Obsessed, which was a top 10 hit). So she's losing more and more credibility in that area. Like E=MC2, MIAM is full of hit singles. I mean, why "You're Mine" was released instead of "Thirsty" or "YDKWTD" in February is beyond me. Great song, horrible single choice. I think at this point it's obvious that Mariah can only succeed with a great management and PR team. She may be a musical genius (no denying that), but at this point, I'd say that's about it. She's clearly not a smart businesswoman. She's slowly but surely destroying what's left of her career and any chances for future commercial success. At least we have the memories.

Edward from USA (44,613) by John from USA
Lol you sound almost as disgruntled as I am. I'm kinda starting not to care about MIAM flopping as hard as it has. I mean, Memoirs flopped, but MIAM has just gone bombs away. And she has no one to blame but herself and her incompetent team. Maybe this will be a wakeup call, like you and I have been saying. I mean, I still haven't forgiven her for E=MC2, and I now believe that was the last chance she had for an epic era. Moving forward, I'd be really happy with a gold album and a Top 10 radio hit single. But perhaps this is Mariah's turn to go the way of Janet and Celine. Then again, Celine actually sells internationally lol. Mariah is so much better than this, and MIAM proves she still has that magic touch to make amazing music. But the question is, does she care anymore? If she wants to retire and be a full-time mom, that's totally fine. Just don't release albums if that's what you want. If you're going to release an album, please put in the work required to not have it sell only five copies. End of.

Adam from the US (44,610) by John from USA
Your post summarizes my thoughts exactly. Mariah provided us with an amazing album. Even many of the critics agree. And that is precisely why it kills me that it's not doing better. She really does deserve success with this album. Not only is it just a great record by itself, it also has several songs that could do really well commercially (Meteorite, Thirsty, and YDKWTD). Mariah is synonymous with commercial success whether people like it or not (or, at least she used to be). I understand if Mariah just wants to be a mother not be a machine. That's fine. By why release this album at all, then? Why put in years of hard work in writing and record these amazing songs if you're just going to let the entire ship sink? If Mariah wants to retire to take some more time off for her family, I fully support her. I just wish she could pick a path and then stick with it. If you're going to release an album as great as MIAM, then get out there and promote it. It deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.

This epic flop could be a blessing in disguise (44,590) by John from USA
The only somewhat logical explanation I can come up with in witnessing this horrible mess of an era is that Mariah simply wants off of Def Jam. The only thing that doesn't add up is that she clearly worked hard on a great album. But then, I think about why would she take 5 years, and then use Memoirs songs to fill up the rest of the album? She must have worked on more music over the last 5 years? I feel like something is wrong in camp Mariah. I'm not sure if it's her personal life or relationship with the label, but something is up. I completely accept the fact that Mariah can't be on top forever, just the way Katy and Rihanna won't always be "can do no wrong" artists after their prime. But even despite the lack of promo, for an artist of Mariah's caliber, these sales are extremely disastrous. I'm totally fine with her distancing herself from this project or trying to resurrect it with a single. If Mariah wants to have a late-career revival like Cher, I hope she's learned her lesson from this. Mariah is still clearly capable of making fantastic music. All she needs to do with be with the correct label, and make sure all ducks are in a row before the album drops (promo lined up, music videos, get in E=MC2 shape, etc.). She also needs to tone down her diva image, and start dressing younger and be more relatable. She hasn't been like that since CM or TEOM. If Mariah wants more success, she can get it. I hope her stubbornness doesn't end her career.
(Monday 9 June 2014; 17:11)
Mariah's new theme is "I don't care, I love it" (44,534) by John from USA
How do we solve a problem like Mariah? Well, she is surronded by "yes" people. She needs people who will actually challenge her and tell her "no" or "get your ass to work". I mean, why release an album at all if you're not going to work and promote it? If she wants to retire and just be a mommy, that's totally fine [...], or only do so when you're willing to put in the work required to not have it flop. She is no longer a "can do no wrong" artist like Katy or Rihanna. They have 1/10000th of Mariah's talent, but if they farted and recorded it, they would be number 1 hits and sell 3 billion downloads on iTunes. Based on how things have been going for her these last few years, I'm genuinely scared that E=MC2 may have been her last chance for an epic era. But she ruined that by releasing the wrong singles and by falling off the face of Earth after TMB (I remember hearing about a ton of appearances that she cancelled right after E=MC2 had its strong start). She was under 40 and looked amazing that era, that may have been her last chance. But then again, look at Cher and Madonna. Cher had her biggest hit "Believe" at 51, and I think Madonna was around 50 ish when she used Justin Timberlake to get a hit on "4 Minutes". Mariah can definitely have more commercial success, she just has to want it and be in a good place. And right now, I don't think she wants it nor is in the best of places. If she wants it, it's hers.

Jermaine/Mariah's musical direction (42,545) by John from USA
Dude, I agree with you 100%. I don't necessarily feel that Mariah has hit a creative rut, but I do think she's uncertain as to the direction she wants to go in. I think we need more songs like #Beautiful, something fresh, fun, upbeat, and different. While I love You're Mine, it's just such a tried-and-true formula. TAOLG is another gem, but would have been better left as an album cut. And I won't even speak of the original version of Triumphant. Essentially, I think Mariah needs to decide on a path, and commit to it. Are we getting an album that is Music Box/Daydream-ish with "raw ballads", an R&B/Pop hybrid like Butterfly/TEOM/Rainbow, a party record like E=MC2, or a vibe album like MOAIA? I think maybe she's worried about trying to cater to everyone, which she can't. I hope she can get her groove back after she finally "lets go" of this album. I honestly think she can still have a solid hit radio single. #Beautiful proved that last summer. Despite her age, when the music is good (TMB, Obsessed, #Beautiful), radio and the general public will respond. And notice how those hits had no rappers and weren't WBT clones. She needs to drop the rappers (or save them for the urban remixes), sing in her full voice, and stop trying to re-create WBT. I always say I'm hard on her, because I know she can do it. She's Mariah freaking Carey. She has music running through her veins. She is music.

The two times I met Mariah (42,311) by John from USA
I've been a huge fan since I first heard "Honey" in 1997 (not to mention that I was a 13 year old straight boy, so yeah, the video was nice too). When she came to NYC to promote Rainbow, I waited in line for 6 hours to meet her. When I got up to her, the guards kept saying "Mariah's tired, no autographs." When I said "I love you Mariah," she said she loved me too, and willingly gave me her autograph on my copy of Rainbow. Then, during TEOM, my friend won some radio contest, so I got to meet her again. This time, she wasn't wearing sunglasses, so I got to look her right in the eye. She held me hand, and looked me right in the eye as I told her how important her music was/is to me. She then signed my promotional copy of "Vision of Love". As I moved aside so my friend could meet her, according to my friend, she said (about me) "You're friend is very cute and nice." Life is made. And as someone else said, Mariah is stunning in person. She is on TV too, but in person, she looks amazing. She doesn't look "fat" on TV or in pictures, but in person she looks crazy thin.

Songs that should have been singles (42,236) by John from USA
Mariah Carey: I agree with the single choices here. But "Prisoner" and "You Need Me" come to mind.
Emotions: "Til The End of Time" and "You're So Cold".
Music Box: "Now That I Know".
Merry Christmas: I wish they pushed her versions of "O Holy Night" and "Christmas Baby Please Come Home" more.
Daydream: I pretty much agree with single choices, but I
wonder how "I Am Free" would have done.
Butterfly: This one's easy. "Breakdown" and "The Roof" (in the USA).
#1s: Wish she promoted her version of "Do You Know When You're Going To" more.
Rainbow: "TGIFY" killed this album. "X-Girlfriend" needed to be the second single. Great song for its time, still love it now.
Glitter: "Loverboy" was the right first single, but "Last Night a DJ" or "All My Life" should've been next.
Charmbracelet: Not many viable "singles" from this album. "I Only Wanted" did deserve a chance, and I'm glad they tried with "Bringin on the Heartbreak".
TEOM: I agree with the single choices.
E=MC2: My blood still boils to think about "Migrate" not being the follow-up to "TMB". That was her 19th number 1. "For The Record" would've been good too.
Memoirs: Not many good "singles" after "Obsessed." I wish "It's a Wrap" with Mary J got released. I think it would've crossed over to Pop.

Favorite and most hated album/single covers (42,198) by John from USA
Top 3 album covers:
1. E=MC2 (my favorite album of hers, this cover is different, sexy, yet still classy and not overly airbrushed like the mess that TEOM was)
2. Daydream (absolutely iconic album cover)
3. Greatest Hits (so beautiful and classy. Love this picture of her)
Top 3 hated album covers:
1. Emotions (just boring to me)
2. Glitter (too much going on, tacky)
3. Music Box (too up close, lol)
Top 3 single covers:
1. Forever/Underneath The Stars (lying in the grass, beautiful and innocent Mariah)
2. Butterfly Meme Remixes (both promo CDs, one she’s coming out of the water, one is from the Butterfly album)
3. X-Girlfriend (very rare promo CD, with a blue background, and Mariah looks perhaps the best she ever has, may not be an official promo cd)
Top 3 hated single covers:
1. Triumphant (too airbrushed, like a painting, similar to TEOM)
2. Emotions (boring, just like the album)
3. Boy (I Need You) (she looks horrible and tired here)

Mimi and her people need to get it together, pronto (41,824) by John from USA
I must first re-affirm my love for Mariah. I have been a huge fan since I heard "Honey" in 1997. I have all of her albums (several copies of some of them), and I used to even collect her singles. As a long-time fan, I am well aware of the high quality of music she is more than capable of. However, if Mariah genuinely wants another hit single/hit album, she needs to really start making smarter choices. If we look at the E=MC2, we can see how bad decisions (not releasing Migrate, falling of the face of the Earth after TMB) can quickly result in your demise. Especially now, when competing against the current "can do no wrong artists" such as Rihanna, Katy, and Miley. Mariah is no longer a "can do no wrong" artist like she was in the 90s. As beautiful as she is, she needs to class her image up, and stop making music videos that are softcore porn (and I'm a straight male who discovered "Honey" when I was a teenager, lol). She hasn't had a good video since TMB. YM(E) has grown on me, but I don't think it's the hit she's looking for. It's too bland. However, I will commend her and her team on the radio promo and interviews they did for YM(E), that's at least a step in the right direction. But if she wants the next single and album to be successful, a lot more work needs to be done. And I'm hard on her, because I know she can do it. Mariah Carey is music. There is no reason why she can't have another radio hit and successful album. She and her team need to get out of their own way.

I just don't understand (41,544) by John from USA
You would think after all these years, being the competitive person that she is, Mariah would know how to ignite a new era. I initially hated "You're Mine", but am happy to admit that it has grown on me (when I loved "Almost Home" and "Beautiful" after the first listen). But it's not a hit, it's too generic, slow, and boring. It's just not a hit. If Mariah no longer cares about radio and relevancy, than fine. But I think that she does. I think she wants another hit. But why on Earth would she put this out first when the album probably has so many better singles. It's like "Bye Bye" vs. "Migrate" all over again. I think her career won't ever recover after the missed opportunity that was E=MC2. She's gonna be 44, she lost her chance for more solid hits after TMB. She's lucky "Obsessed" did as well as it did. Sigh. Such a hard time to be a Mariah fan right now.

Clueey23 / Chris / new era (40,744) by John from USA
Welcome Chris! I'm glad to see a relatively young Mariah fan on here. And clueey23, I agre with everything you said. I still get angry just thinking about how badly the E=MC2 era was handled. Radio was behind her (after TEOM), she looked the best she had since Butterfly, and that album had so many singles. Migrate was a no brainer, and after Touch My Body, it would have been the perfect summer jam. E=MC2 is actually my favorite album after Daydream (which is perfection). Anyhow, I'm very excited for this new era. I have a feeling that Mariah herself is really in it this time. I feel like she knows she needs a hit radio single. At this point, I'll be happy with a top 10 like Obsessed, but a number 1, well, if she gets another number 1, I will run down my block naked. Lol please get out there and promote like hell Mimi. I know you can do still this.

Favorite songs per album (40,438) by John from USA
Good idea Ashely. I'll play too, but as you can see, it's hard to pick even one song per album lol.
Mariah Carey - "Someday" (my favorite Mimi song - wish she'd bring this one back)
