About Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa: Music lover.

Re: Did Mariah have an affair? (94,029) (94,032) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
You beat me to it.

I was just thinking yesterday that I needed to make a post about Mariah and her love history. My thought is different though. I was listening to Lullaby also yesterday (I listen to this song everyday though, it's possibly my number 1) and was just thinking about all the songs she has about this certain person. I then thought about the WBT video. Here's my hunch: I think she was in a real love with someone before she met Tommy. He promised her everything that she ever wanted. The lifestyle, family, career, fame, all of it. She chose it all over her actual love.

When her marriage started to show it's true colors, she got nostalgic (Crybaby anyone?). I feel like this is all completely unresolved. This is why she keeps coming back to this theme on all her albums. Maybe the guy got jealous of her spending time with Tommy getting her debut together and he ended it or gave her an ultimatum, who knows?

I feel like this played out in Glitter a bit too. This would also make sense as to why she has only "been with" a handful of men. Idk if she would even dare bring any of this up into her memoir, and maybe the guy has since passed away (Candy Bling) but I would love to know about who she was with pre-Tommy.

Subtle Invitation (92,586) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I really hope that we get an album of beautiful gems like this one. One Night With Mariah Tour to follow, including songs like Babydoll, The Roof, After Tonight, 4th of July, Mine Again, Thanx 4 Nothin, Betha gon know, and of course 8th Grade all done in arrangements in the same realm as Subtle Invitation. I am so here for it. I love this performance and her live vocals (which are most of the vocals). Watch here. Enjoy.

Re: Charmbracelet (92,575) (92,585) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
How dare all of you.

I've fallen in love with Charmbracelet so hard since just before Caution was released. Back in the day it was her whisper tone that didn't grab me and I felt that the samples were not used creatively, which she was always great at. But it finally got to me and I've been in love with it for real. I am literally totally shocked that my faves were written off the tracklist that started this post. (By the way, all posting on here is fun for me, I am not in any way bashing anyone else's opinions or stirring drama.)

That being said. Boy (I need you) is sooo nice to listen to now. It's just cool and so effortless. And it just sounds pink. Like totally pink and I love that.

Clown. This song. I call it the "sweet dis". I have never heard someone read for filth in the sweetest tone. Her flows are flawless and so melodic. Seriously when I go off on people I aim for eloquence and composure and that's what that song does for me. Again, totally effortless. I have it right up there with Breakdown.

Subtle Invitation. Ok, so I'm a huge fan of jazz, especially with female vocals. I love live instruments also. Subtle Invitation is the first grown woman track that I have hear by her. She uses so much restraint in her voice until she needs to let it out. It is so bluesy as far as the tone she is setting in her story. The song is extremely relatable and I love how it feels like a whole movie to me. It is one of her modest songs and I love it so so so much.

And finally, possibly my all time favorite song by Mariah ever, Lullaby. I can't listen to this without getting all emotional. Everyone can relate to this song and her word choice, her tone, her attitude and approach. It is just so her, it's so personal. The opening notes and when that beat kicks in reminds me of 80s MJ a tad. This is The Roof pt 2. The Roof is my 2nd face of hers right behind this one. That scene that she paints when she sings in minor. I can't get enough of it. I feel like she uses the minor notes much more in this song than usual. The song sounds sexy, seductive, familiar, but excited (that beat) and also cautious. Which to me, are all the feelings that rush when seeing an ex again that you still have sexual chemistry and feelings for. Impeccably captured and executed.

Ok. That being said, here are the fillers that I skip always:
Through the Rain (including remix)
My Saving Grace
Sunflowers
Bringing on the Heartbreak

The One Remix is so much better than the original to me. I think because I like how clear she sounds when she is not in that sweet tone with all the layering. It reminds me of My All/Stay Awhile video vibe and I love that.

Ok, that's my 2 cents. Just for reference: I've been a lamb since '90 and Mariah made me believe in Santa Claus (story for another time). And I'm a huge fan of Caution, loved her vocals in a lower register and 8th Grade is everything.

Ummmm, what about You Don't Know What To Do? That and Dedicated are both amazing and so much better than a number of songs on this list.

Skips re-edit to Infinity (52,581) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
After many listens today, I can't stop with the praise. This version enhances the power behind this song. The musicality of it makes so much sense and you can hear the crescendos and the climaxes, the instrumentation is beautiful in your version. It really tells a story this way and it even has dynamics that I think get lost in the released version. I really hope someone gets ahold of your mix and it gets out there. I'll say it again, anyone that wasn't into the original, this is like a totally different song.

Skip, Infinity re-edit (52,558) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Wow. I have grown to love this song this week. Just last night when listening to it I got a Donna Summers type dramatic upbeat ballad vibe from it. I love it. But the arrangement of this re-edit flows so nicely. Dare I say better than the original? I love the original first verse coming second. I think it is the speed of the lyrics there, they feel better coming after her softer and smoother delivery of "close the door" in her familiar voice. You should try to get these to her peeps, this is such a great radio presentation of the song. Anyone that doesn't love the song yet will love this version. On another note, does anyone else notice that in the lyric video "infinity" is written in the same Thirsty font and I keep seeing the word Thirsty in Infinity when they flash it.

Vocals over time (48,270) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Again, I am not knocking Mariah, but everyone is asking what we expect from someone who has been singing for over 20 years. I'm sorry, but that is no excuse for poor vocal maintenance. I've seen Prince live many many times as recently as a few months ago and he has been singing live for way longer that Mimi has. He takes great care of his voice, he hasn't had a perfect life, twice divorced, lost a child, put through the wringer by media and abandoned by record labels, yet he still sounds amazing to this day. He evolves with every record, every decade, and he adjusts his live arrangements to his current vocals, even though he still hits high and low notes. The cool thing about his shows is that he doesn't try to sound like a cd or record, you get a live version that you've never heard. I know that he and Mariah are close friends, I think she said that she came to him when she was offered the AI gig. Maybe he can give her some tips on restoring her best instrument, her voice.

Evolving (hopefully) (48,268) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I've said this before about her situation at the launch of her latest album, I think this shattering of her perfect image is the best thing that can be happening to her. Every singer, every artist, every person needs to evolve and change. It is natural and healthy. It's gotten to the point that it almost looks painful for her to keep up the image, the facade, and maintain all this pressure. It is the reason that she handles so much heat. She is competing with a version of herself that no longer exists and remains perfect. No one can succeed at that. If Mariah were to evolve artistically, we could enjoy some great bluesy, smoky, jazzy music in a lower register. I'd die for an album of Mariah and a piano. Possibly even some Sade-esque (not to compare, but just as a musical reference) music and tone that speaks on her favorite topic: love. Giving her body a break with beautiful materials that are non-constricting, yet still elegant. Embracing the rasp in her voice for maybe some rock tunes or neo-soul. There is so much that is possible. If only she'd let go of what she has already nailed. As this image crumbles, hopefully she will embrace more of her present-time self.

Unfortunately, no splash (47,456) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
So it looks like Mariah was planning on elusively delivering confirmation of her split/divorce from Nick. First the lyric change in the show, now her cameo on RHOH. In the appearance she said "Nick will also lose visitation rights" (obviously joking, but referring to if he brings Kevin to the house). Then at another point she is referred to as Nick's ex. Someone named her in a list of the select few of the exes of the guys whose a$$ the others guys can grab. Twice in the opening episode. This explains why she wanted Nick more quiet, I believe she wanted to get buzz going by doing it so publicly, yet discreetly. But the shock value isn't there since everyone is already assuming it's over. I've checked blog sites, no one seems to care much. It's unfortunate but it looks like her alternative promotional ideas (butterfly drink, vines, now this) aren't really catching on. Guess we'll see what her next move is.

Good intentions (47,180) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
The animosity on this board stems from our sensitivity towards Mariah. Strong feelings and opinions are being thrown around, but with good intentions at heart. There is a way of remedying a situation for someone (Mariah) with tough love, another way is through unending support. Both are very effective and I think this is where people are misunderstanding one as an attack or as negligence. I don't think anyone on here wishes negativity towards Mariah, however, I think a lot of people are feeling heartbroken watching her in this state: not appearing to be fully engaged in her craft (for one reason or another, whether in her control or not). We all love and want the best for her so that she can continue sharing her best with the world. She is known for indulging in escapism and some of us fear that it will be her downfall, while understanding that it is her chosen way of dealing with stress and personal issues. No one is faulting her for needing to cope, I think people are just saddened and noticing an urgency that is underlying that something has got to change for her to stay in health all around. This is where the misinterpretation and miscommunication is coming in on this board. While some fans are standing their ground in the harsh reality to remind Mariah "where the ground is", other fans feel the answer is to escape with her so that she won't feel alone or abandoned. Again, I see where both sprout from good intentions, we just have to have more compassion all around.

The Elusive Chanteuse Show (47,124) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Randy, I agree with you 100%. All of these are just excuses. She's has been doing this for way too long for any excuses to be relevant. This is her second divorce and she was doing amazing at the time of the last one. This does remind me a lot of Whitney when her voice was gone, lots of talking awkward ad-libbing to prevent having to hold a note, and short bursts of a note to make up for what it should be. I love this album and wish her success, I just think she has relied on the studio and lip syncing for so long that she doesn't have the discipline for the care that goes in to a live tour. Your mention of Patty, Chaka, Tina was right on. They've got decades on Mariah and still sound great. I just saw Chaka recently and she was amazing. I wish Mariah the best, but I think she is in denial that something needs to change for her career to survive. Her fan base seems to enable the delusion more than help the cause.

Re: Miss You (46,810) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I always loved this song. It has such a moody darkness The Roof-esque but dance track. It is about the same guy as Don't Forget About Us (remix) and The Roof, My All/Stay Awhile (remix). You can tell by the quality of those two remix videos, the style of the songs, I love this Mariah. Subtle Invitation, Lullaby, Thank God I Found You Make It Last Forever Remix. I love it all. Btw, I think she is most beautiful in the Don't Forget About Us (remix), The Roof, My All/Stay Awhile (remix) videos.

Me. I am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse (46,215) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
From the first listen the first day this album came out I knew it was all about her current relationship(s). How interesting for the music to come before the news. I can't wait to see how she presents her art imitating life as it will seem to so many as life imitating art. And I forgot to mention my suspicions of divorce from the launch of the Butterfly drink, her constant flashing of the Butterfly ring (I know she wore it often before but I feel like it's always on or bigger now), and the Butterfly on the website pic for The Elusive Chanteuse Show, and her more than usual placement of it lately. The Butterfly became the symbol for post-divorce liberation because of her. I remember so many women getting tattoos of butterflies after divorcing around the time of that album. Anyway, way to incorporate it all into her art. Which is so Mariah, this will be a very interesting and amazing era to watch.

We Belong Together (45,958) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Um, has anyone else noticed that she put this video up on the home screen of her website? I really think it's her telling us something about her current marriage. The entire facade is crumbling, which is the best thing that could happen to her in order to have more longevity in my opinion.

Mariah's plan, a hunch (44,726) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Ever since the album came out and she wanted to "secretly" release it Beyonce style while announcing the date, I have had a hunch that she is going to promote and creatively support the album randomly, over time, and sporadically. I think she likes the surprise element and is trying to do something new. We may get surprise videos, performances, etc without much notice. I think she wants to break some rules on how it's done, similarly to how Bey did but in a different way. It is just my hunch, but I believe the silence is all a part of it and not a mistake. We'll see. Either way, I'm loving my album.

The Elusive Chanteuse (44,252) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Having followed Mariah since the beginning, honestly, I was very skeptical of this moment in her career. The setbacks, controversies, etc lead me to believe that her focus was more on the "competition" and image than the music. I was completely wrong. After hearing this album in its entirety, which is what she says is key in every interview she's had regrading this work of art, I see that she is being nothing more than completely honest in this record. What I get from the album is that we see her career, her marriage, her family. The image of the American Dream, the image of success. What she is saying is that behind all of that, this is what she feels. This album tells stories of imperfection, longing, memories of love - not saying that she is not currently in love, but every relationship evokes different levels of love. It also tells me that her career may have taken the place of personal relationships and experiences which has her still longing for fulfillment in some aspects. This is her most raw and honest in my opinion. I love every second of it, nothing is contrived or reaching. This is not an album of radio hits, she is not focusing on that. For once she is being selfish in the best way possible. She is doing what an artist does, creating something that she enjoys and that she wants more of in the world: her music her way. The Elusive Chanteuse: the singer that has secrets, mystery, and complexity that is not sitting on the surface. Cheers Mariah.
