Re: The Ballads compilation (101,147) (101,150) by Bill from the UK
Yes, what you say makes sense in some ways, but then are How Much and the remix of TGIFY a representation of the ballads from Rainbow? When you have CTTA, After Tonight, Petals etc. that better fit the definition. Petals would have been a great showcase as it's a different type of ballad to the overwrought Carey/Afanasieff collabs from everything before.

What I'm trying to say is that I get there are the traditional ballads and the mid-tempo ballads and the different types of ballads. But is How Much a ballad?

Re: The Ballads compilation (101,142) (101,143) by Bill from the UK
Seal's first two albums were brilliant, I still play them today. As for Toni, I'm a big fan as well. Her voice is spectacular, and her debut album and Secrets I still play quite often. I love "Let It Flow" from Secrets, and "Breathe Again" from the debut.

Re: The Ballads compilation (101,130) (101,131) by Bill from the UK
Yes I agree. Much like The Remixes before it, The Ballads was a missed opportunity in a lot of ways. Of all the markets it was released in, Japan had the best tracklisting:

1. Hero
2. One sweet day
3. Endless love
4. Can't take that away
5. Open arms
6. Reflections
7. Butterfly
8. Love takes time
9. My all
10. Without you
11. Always be my baby
12. Vision of love
13. Can't let go
14. Anytime you need a friend
15. Thank God I found you (Make it last)
16. I'll be there
17. I still believe
18. Never too far
19. All I want for Christmas is you

So it had a number of the tracks you listed and removed some of the less ballad-y type songs. I get it probably had to have a certain hit-to-album track ratio, but I can't believe deep cuts like Vanishing, Till the End of Time, All I've Ever Wanted, Outside, Whenever You Call etc. didn't get a look in.

To the same degree The Remixes second disc annoys me, especially when towards the end it seems they gave up and just put on album tracks like Sweetheart and Crybaby rather than including something really rare like the Drifting Remix of Underneath the Stars or the club mixes for DYKWYGT etc. (This was before the EPs of course and would have been a good incentive to pick up the compilation.)

But we love everyone.

Re: Endless Love (101,114) (101,121) by Bill from the UK
Endless Love is divine. For me, it beats out the original by miles. Lionel and Diana's version is nice, but both Luther and Mariah are superior singers and their voices are so rich and soulful and gel together so perfectly. Like a full bodied wine.

The live version in London is one of Mariah's best ever performances. I'm lucky to have the promo CD with that version on it. They also sang it live on Top of the Pops as well together. They sang a shorter version but it was still great.

The video is also one of my faves. The warm hues, Mariah looks so great, and I love her "studio" videos (except Infamous of course).

Just a beautiful song, sang wonderfully by both of them.

Re: Butterfly 25 (101,102) (101,103) by Bill from the UK
Yep, I really hope it is true, or at least some of it (the Allure demos). And I think irrespective of when someone became a Mariah fan, we all recognise how important Butterfly is to Mariah and what the album represents in terms of her growth as both a person and artist.

Butterfly 25 (101,085) by Bill from the UK
Hi you all. Here's the rumoured tracklisting for the Butterfly 25th anniversary. One thing to note, David Morales said recently an old remix he did for Mariah is coming out soon, so it correlates with the Morales mix for Breakdown listed. If this tracklisting turns out to be true I will be over the moon.

1. Last Chance 4:22
2. Don't Go Looking for Love 3:16
3. After We Said Goodbye 6:12
4. All Cried Out 4:35
5. Make You Happy 4:59
6. Head Over Heels 4:10
7. Lead the Way (1996 demo) 4:18
8. The Roof (Original Version) 7:10
9. Honey (Demo 1) 5:32
10. Honey (Demo 2) 4:36
11. Breakdown (Morales Club Mix) 8:19
12. Fourth of July (Alternative Vocal Take) 4:19
13. Close My Eyes (Acoustic) 3:21
14. The Roof (When I Feel the Need) (feat. Brandy) 5:08
15. Breakdown (featuring Halle Bailey)

Re: That Girl - Mariah (101,035) (101,042) by Bill from the UK
Jagged Little Pill was a phenomenal album, and deserved to win over Daydream in my view. Sorry, y'all know Mariah means everything to me, and Daydream is a superb album, but you can't take away from Alanis her well deserved achievement.

Re: Mariah and Luis duet (101,023) (101,024) by Bill from the UK
Yes, the entire Rainbow album is recorded and mastered incredibly poorly. I don't think the poor sound quality is to do with the duet itself being scrapped, more just a terrible transfer from the master tape. It really needs to be remastered, unless the problem stems from the recording itself. The facility she used in Capri was primitive compared to the US Sony studios she recorded in beforehand. Also, perhaps the rush to get the album out and Mariah off the label contributed to a "it's good enough" approach. Either way it's shocking how terrible the album sounds. After Tonight is the worst track but there are others with flaws all the way through. Sometimes I curse my hi-fi set up and listen to the album on Spotify where you can't notice any of the problems.

Re: Mariah and Luis duet (101,017) (101,018) by Bill from the UK
The other version of the story (non-dramatised for TV) is that the duet was After Tonight, but it was simply not in the right key for Luis to sing, and they realised their voices were not compatible, so Mariah recorded it solo.

I do wonder if it is the same girl that used to write brilliant songs in the woodshop with Ben Margulies, that signed the contract to promote and endorse McDonalds.

My All (100,957) by Bill from the UK
Every so often I am struck with how beautiful this song is. The gentle guitar, the subdued percussion, the ethereal lyrics and imagery, and of course Mariah's gorgeous vocals. So tentative, yet so intense at the same time. The song is so simple, but completely unforgettable. I was on my balcony in this glorious heatwave, as the day was cooling off. Headphones on, this track on repeat. I listened from sunset, through twilight, to the stars coming out.

RIP Olivia Newton John (100,940) by Bill from the UK
Just the other day I wrote how much I loved Mariah's duet with ONJ. So sad to hear of her passing away. I really hope their duet is released in its entirety one of these days. God bless her always.

Re: Best breakup album: Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (100,895) (100,901) by Bill from the UK
I Only Wanted I group with the trilogy of My All, After Tonight and that. Luis was meant to duet with MC on After Tonight, but it wasn't in his key, or their voices didn't gel together, so it didn't happen. Was that what you were thinking of?

As for songs about Derek. I agree Fourth of July may be likely, but as this is a continuation of Underneath the Stars, it fans the flames of my theory that Mariah and Derek were having an affair as far back as 1995. With that lens, he could also have been just a "sweet, sweet fantasy baby", and perhaps she couldn't breathe and fell deep when she first saw him? Who knows.

Re: #Butterfly25 (100,874) (100,875) by Bill from the UK
Nice list. I'd add Head Over Heels (Allure) as well. I'd bet the farm recorded a demo for them, as the vocal arrangements and layers are so her. I can just hear her singing it, and think it'd be a good addition to Butterfly. My only other wish is for the Butterfly tour to be DVD'd. Around The World cut half the songs in half, I'd love a full length version of Hopelessly Devoted to You with ONJ.

Re: MC hurry up (100,866) (100,867) by Bill from the UK
I've never really understood the appeal of Beyonce either. She's incredibly beautiful, can sing reasonably well, and knows how to make an impact, I'll give her that. But, her songs always seem to be her just chanting the same line over and over again whilst performing some mind numbingly complicated dance routine. Will she ever make a song like Till the End of Time, Everything Fades Away, Outside, Petals, The Roof? I don't think so. She's either demanding a man pay her bills, bills, bills and put a ring on it, or declaring her independence from said man. Make your mind up.

#Butterfly25 (100,858) by Bill from the UK
Mariah's just posted to socials #Butterfly25. I wonder what she has up her sleeve for its silver anniversary?

I'm predicting a rerecording of the album a la The Roof with Brandy and Close My Eyes acoustic.

Re: MC hurry up (100,852) (100,853) by Bill from the UK
My relationship with My All is that I won't play it for months, and then I will listen to it on repeat for days on end, and nothing but that.

Re: Reach For The Sky is Fly Like A Bird (100,833) (100,834) by Bill from the UK
That's a plausible theory. I'm a big Tori Amos fan and she was explaining in an interview that her unused songs often found their way onto later albums in a different guise. So she would for example take the bridge from an unused song and apply it to a new song that was being written, use a chord progression, a lyric idea, a melodic strand. She shared some demos and you could hear the beginnings of other songs that came years later. In short she said she never really wasted anything. A real example from Mariah is Save the Day. The song was originally planned for the original The Art of Letting Go album, but got re-worked for The Rarities with the Lauryn Hill sample etc., but I expect the structure/skeleton of the song was the same.

Got my hopes set for The Rarities II You which will feature CB leftover tracks, There For Me, I Lose Control, Skydiving, We're Not Making Love Anymore and the demo tape.

Re: What sank Charmbracelet? (100,807) (100,825) by Bill from the UK
Yeh it's probably a combination of what everybody has already said to be fair. Saying that though, how do we think the album has aged? It's definitely a "mood" album, and has grown on me over the years. I don't spin it often, but when I do, I always appreciate the laid back R&B, and I've grown to appreciate the stylistic approach she took to her vocal delivery. Lyrically it's up there with Butterfly in my view. It's odd that Through the Rain tanked in the US, as it was really well received across other markets.
