Taylor Swift's lead single from her upcoming album "Reputation" is set to drop Thursday evening and Mariah Carey fans, affectionately called her "lambs", are conspiring to preserve Carey's record of holding the longest-running No. 1 single on the Billboard charts. Even if it means purchasing Swift's new single.
"One Sweet Day", Carey's saccharine ballad featuring Boyz II Men from her "Daydream" album, topped the charts for 16 consecutive weeks from November 1995 to March 1996. But it's in danger of being upstaged by "Despacito", this summer's huge hit that's a collaboration between Justin Bieber and Puerto Rican artists Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. The bilingual "Despacito" has topped the charts for 15 straight weeks and set the record for the most-streamed song of all time, knocking down Bieber's previous record-setting "Sorry". And it only needs one more week to match Carey's success.
But monster sales of Swift's new song could unseat Fonsi, Yankee and Bieber. The combination of Swift's dedicated fan base that's starved for new music and Carey's lambs may prove to be a "Game of Thrones"-style alliance no one saw coming. Swift teased the new song Wednesday on Instagram. She announced her hotly anticipated sixth album this week; it's set for release on Wednesday, November 10.
The 27-year-old singer-songwriter's last album, 2014's "1989", spurred three No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Many lambs are turning to social media to advocate for Swift's success. "I have never rooted for Taylor Swift more, solely because she is the best hope to preserve Mariah's record," one Twitter user wrote.
"Despacito" fans clapped back and urged listeners to stream and buy the inescapable song. Others don't care what drops "Despacito" after it blocked hits like "Wild Thoughts" from the coveted "song of summer 2017" status. We'll be waiting for one sweet day - Monday, August 28 - to find out who'll reign supreme (and make it on our playlists) when Billboard releases the new Hot 100.
