Debbie Gibson's friendship with Mariah Carey

Debbie Gibson is dishing all about her friendship with Mariah Carey. The "Lost in Your Eyes" singer, 55, opened up about the reason Carey, 56, slid into her Instagram DMs back in 2022 while chatting exclusively with Parade amid the September 9 release of her new memoir, Eternally Electric: The Message in My Music. Gibson touches on the story in her book as well.

"She wrote me a handwritten note when my career first started, and she was so lovely because she had said something in an interview that could have been misconstrued, like, 'Well, if Debbie Gibson is doing anything, I should be out there,' or something like that," Gibson explains. "And what she meant was, 'I am inspired because you're young, and I'm young, and I want to do what you're doing.'"

Noting that she'll never forget how the "All I Want for Christmas" singer "took the time to write the note on a piece of stationary," Gibson goes on to tell Parade about some of the voice notes from their messages.

"And here's our thread," she says. "Like, she's saying she's so sorry to hear about my mother's passing. We've had a whole Long Island artist-producer banter about musical instruments and equipment and the song ("Only in My Dreams"). She's always been super sweet."

Gibson, who was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2013, is also opening up about her health. "As I say in the book, everyone has their own path," she tells Parade. "Mine was chiropractic kinesiology. I am best when I'm on next-to-no supplements, no medications, and my life is in harmony."

She adds, "It took me seven to 10 years to really get that, and nobody wants to hear that, by the way, because when you when you get diagnosed with something, you hope that you're going to rest for a month, and you're going to be fine. Maybe some people are, but for me, it was an extraordinarily long road, and I'm really at the place now where I feel really, really good."
