Mariah moves to Island

Following a bidding war, Mariah Carey has secured a new recording contract and her own record label imprint with Island/Def Jam, dotmusic can confirm. The singer went through a turbulent year in 2001, culminating in the loss of her record contract with Virgin/EMI this January, after the company paid her £19 million to terminate their relationship following poor album sales for "Glitter".

Carey is said to be already working on a new album, but the financial terms of her new deal have not been revealed. Commenting on his new star signing, Lyor Cohen, president and CEO of Island/Def Jam, said: "Mariah has chosen Island as the place to begin the next phase of her unprecedented career." The name of Carey's new label has yet to be decided, but she has also set up a media company to handle her other projects, including publishing, film and production.
