Mariah inks new label deal

Mariah Carey has inked a deal to form her own label with Island Def Jam Music Group, Billboard Bulletin reports. The still-unnamed imprint will be run by Jerry Blair, with whom Carey worked while she recorded for Columbia Records. According to sources, Carey - who parted ways with Virgin Records in January after her disappointing "Glitter" soundtrack for a buyout of close to $30 million - is in the studio and hopes to release a new album "as soon as possible".

A Billboard.com poll at the time found that 60% of more than 4,000 voters felt Carey was better off in the long run by accepting Virgin's buyout. 31% disagreed, saying that her star power has waned, and that the split was better for Virgin, which decided to cut its losses in paying out her contract, rather than risk an uncertain future with the artist. Carey stars with Mira Sorvino in the film "Wisegirls", scheduled for release later this year.
