Mariah urged by activists to cancel Saudi Arabia concert

Women-led organization CodePink have called upon Mariah Carey to cancel an upcoming performance in Saudi Arabia due to some of the country's views. Carey is set to perform January 31 alongside Tiesto and Sean Paul. However, activists now insist she should not do so due to Saudi Arabia's jailing of women's rights advocates and alleged human rights abuse.

A statement on the organization's website read, "What? Why is Mariah Carey planning a January 31, 2019 concert in Saudi Arabia? Doesn't she know Saudi Arabia is one of the most repressive and murderous regimes on the planet? Doesn't she know that women fighting for their rights are tortured in Saudi prisons? Doesn't she know that Saudi Arabia is bombing school children in Yemen?"

They also penned an open letter to all artists scheduled to perform. It included, "Since 2015 Saudi Arabia has been waging a war on Yemen so brutal that the country is now experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis on earth. Already, as many as 85,000 children under the age of five have died of hunger. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has not been held accountable for barbaric murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and women activists are being imprisoned and tortured for speaking out for their rights."

"Though women in Saudi Arabia have recently gained the right to drive, the kingdom has since arrested, imprisoned, and tortured a number of the brave women who campaigned women to drive. And under the oppressive male guardianship system, women in Saudi Arabia need permission from a male to travel, study, obtain a passport, marry, and engage in other life events."

"If you perform at the Saudi international golf tournament in King Abdullah Economic City, you will be helping Saudi Arabia artwash their war crimes and repression of women, journalists, and anyone speaking out."

I want to know one thing. Where were the feminists when Eminem and those comedians were ripping Mimi? Not one of these women stood up or said sh@t.

Can these [...] establish exactly how preventing Mariah from performing in Saudi Arabia actually improve the lives and social status of women in that country? Are they actually doing anything concrete and tangible to uplift the lives of women in Saudi Arabia or is this all virtual grandstanding and bullying to feel like heroes? This world is full of holier than though [...] who have no inclination to actually get off their butts and do real life-changing work for their supposed cause, I swear.

Whilst Eminem was ripping Mimi, these feminists were presumably working for women's rights in Saudi Arabia. Performing in Saudi at this point, is like performing at a Trump rally, except without all the backlash because most Americans won't notice. It can be argued that the current prince of Saudi Arabia is even worse than Trump. I suppose while she is at it, she can make a pit stop in Russia and Yemen. Folks need a little glitter and festiveness in between the daily bombings. At least for those who can afford to attend the concerts. Sigh. I love me some Mimi, but either she is completely oblivious and goes wherever they book her or she just wants her bag and doesn't care. I can't really defend this. And if the media just so happens to pay attention - ugh. If it's not Stella tanking her, it's some other stupid decision. Come on girl, you are not this hard up for cash.
