Migrate? Never heard about that one. Is that one of those songs who never made it to the album, and have secretly leaked online?

It's not only you. "When I Feel It" is not a bad song, it's just an unpolished filler. I never heard anybody claim it was a potential hit. I like it more than "Secret Love" and "Sprung" though. The "Once in a Lifetime" ringtone, had it be turned into a full song, it would've been a great one. There's one song that nobody ever talks about that could've been #1, it's called " Migrate".

So far he's acknowledged that she wanted to go in different directions from the start but also that she didn't like [Hero] and didn't want it on Music Box. He said that she said it was too white bread. He felt that deep down she loved it especially when it became such a big hit, but that he felt it was more that she didn't want her fiends to think she was selling out as such. But he ultimately said she was the one writing these lyrics and no one put those words into her head. I personally feel that she knew deep down these were great songs and the right direction but her own rebellious side wanted to distance herself from them. You can't force natural talent and those lyrics. He even says he should never have got involved the way he did, she should have kept it a business arrangement. He said he's seen it time and time again where artists want to move away from their core base. He is very complimentary of Mariah and accepts her upbringing and insecurities but again those early years of music no one was forcing her to write those lyrics, they came from the heart. Also he says that it was Mariah who proposed to him. I genuinely think he loved her and his own insecurities blinded him when she was wanting to experiment musically. Sometimes when people get together it can bring out the worst traits even when they both love each other.

I've just started reading Tommy Mottola's book from the point he met Mariah. Still got some to go but I was loving the part where he went down to the woodshop after Mariah said come down and meet Ben Marguiles. He says when he got there he was faced with Mariah singing. He said she was good on the demo but to hear her sing there in the woodshop studio was incredible and her voice was so powerful. It gave me goose bumps imagine witnessing that. He said it was then that he noticed her flirting with him and he had to speak to his therapist about her as he felt he was falling in love with her. I can't wait to read some more tonight.

Aretha, yes. Whitney, no. I can't be that bombastic, but WH lost a lot of respect during the years. If it was the diva/trash attitude or the drugs, I don't know.

That was a really good article. I also believe that Randy is correct about all the diva act keep her and rest of the world separate. People doesn't take her serious. Another perspective is that her voice was so good, that I guess people did think of her as a product, made by the record company.

I am in the same category. Mariah Carey 1990-1996 just killed. Those lyrics, that voice. Listening to the live versions of her debut album is just out of this world. Her voice changed on every album, and I was "scared" back in '97 when she released Butterfly. The voice that we knew was gone. I don't think fans or lambs post 2000 understand what kind of artist she used to be. I'm just glad to have experienced the extreme power that she had at the time.
At some point she has to get rid of her stilettos, swimsuits, gowns and the newly rich trash style, and use normal clothes and flat shoes. I guess she would look better in stuff from HM than what she wears now.
My dream is that she is going acoustic and simple on stage, like the unplugged concert. Lose the attitude, kill the inner diva and be a humble human being. Be real. She shouldn't try to sing the songs like she used to, but in a way that fits her voice.
Peace out. And have fun at the beach.

Bless you Bobby, I still check in from time to time. Truth is I'm just not a fan of modern day Mariah. Don't get me wrong, I will always love her more than any of you all ever will lol, but I prefer Mariah lamenting about loving someone till the end of time or being alone in love, rather than telling me to GTFO and bragging about riding a D with Ariana Grande.
Anyway, to answer your question, my favourite album is of course the untouchable debut. There is something so magical about those Carey-Margulies compositions, and her voice never sounded as good. That deep, rich tone full of volume and timbre. Oh how I miss it. As for my favourite song, aside from All I Want for Christmas Is You and Vision of Love which I consider separate entities, it would be the regular album version of Fantasy. It came out during the peak of my fandom and hearing it the first time on the radio, I still wistfully think back to that day now and again.
I also enjoy long walks on the beach and quiet nights in. Hope you've been well.

You all are missing out on the best version of Fantasy. It is the Bad Boy Mix which I think is track 4 on the maxi-single. It has both the pop hook and ODB on it. It's the only one I listen to. I love Honey with Mase and The Lox. I hate the Jermaine Dupri remix. I love Gucci Mane on Obsessed. I love both The Roof extended Mobb Deep and Breakdown extended Bobe Thugs. I love the Nicki Minaj verse on Up Out My Face. My All/Stay Awhile with the rap is also a favorite.

Buttery tone (108,444)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Bobby A, a "buttery" voice refers to a smooth, fluid, warm, and rounded vocal quality. Most of Mariah's '90s catalog is filled with it. Some examples, just to pick a few, include Vanishing, Till the End of Time, Can't Let Go, Music Box, Underneath the Stars, Lead the Way, Open Arms, Melt Away, and Everything Fades Away. Albums like Daydream, Music Box, Merry Christmas, and Butterfly are basically the epitome of a beautiful buttery voice.
Sadly, by 2002, only traces of that buttery voice were still there. And before some of y'all try to nail me to a cross next to Oprah and Gayle, I'm not saying she couldn't sing, she absolutely could still blow, but the fluidity and seamless transitions between registers just weren't the same. A lot of us complained about the heavy use of the whisper register on Charmbracelet, it's funny that I would take anything from her with even half that quality in a heartbeat.

Ok it's approaching Mariah's birthday, or anniversary as she likes to call it. I've looked through her discography to see which singles whether physical, digital or just radio got a March release date. There wasn't many. I Don't Wanna Cry, March 19th 1991 The Roof (Back In Time), March 16th 1998 (UK) We Belong Together, March 15th 2005 Fly Like A Bird, March 13th 2006 A No No, March 4th 2019 Big Energy Remix, March 28th 2022 Out of all her March releases, which is your number one favourite? Mine is The Roof (Back In Time).

Daydream is a thing of beauty. I can listen to that whole album beginning to end. No skips. I love every song. Looking In is my favorite track. It's my life's theme song. "It seems as though I've always been; somebody outside looking in." Oh wait, I can choose another song. Hmmm let's see, ABMB. That song sounds as current today as it did 30 years ago. Guilty pleasure: Melt Away.
TEOM had me jumping for joy 20 years later after Daydream. I thought the whisper from CB was MC's current trend. However, when I got a hold of an mp3 containing snippets of all the songs before the album's release, I couldn't contain my excitement. The voice was back. I have to choose only 2 songs? Fly Like A Bird, Circles. Guilty pleasure: Your Girl.

I do agree with you how the critics were always trying to get her in the 90s. One of the most respected critics in Norway was writing so much horrible things about her after the success of Music Box, that most media rejected her. It was almost hard to admit that I was a fan when I discussed music with people. I even got my cds wrapped as gifts when I bought them. I was afraid of the looks from the guys behind the counter.
On the other hand I really, really don't like Glitter, the movie. The album is one of her best releases since the beginning.

I was also there in the 90s watching Mariah's career. Mariah was commercially successful in the 90s but not respected by the industry or by critics. It really all started when Nelson George referred to her as a "white girl trying to sing black" and also reverberated with the 1996 Grammys snub. I also remember Sandra Bernhardt directing some really racist statements at Mariah in the late 1990s (statements I won't repeat here because they are awful). It was never "cool" to like Mariah until very recently. I remember all of the thinly veiled homophobia that was directed at me during middle school and high school because I loved Mariah.
"The Bodyguard" has great songs on the soundtrack, but the film itself and the acting are not good at all. There was definitely a reason why the film had sat in development purgatory since the mid 1970s. It was originally intended for Diana Ross. I doubt that it would have been produced if Whitney hadn't been the huge star she was in the late 80s/early 90s. Whitney was good in "Waiting to Exhale", for sure, but that's as much due to Forest Whitaker's excellent job directing as it was due to Whitney's acting.
I believe "Glitter" could have done just as well as "The Bodyguard" if there hadn't been so much venom directed at Mariah in the late 1990s/early 2000s and if there hadn't been so many issues that Mariah had to deal with during the 1997-2001 period of her career.

I think I understand what you mean Will, but please no more perfumes or cosmetics from Mariah. I need new music. A jazz album, a duets album, Rarities part 2, the hidden grunge album. A singer should focus on music. If the inspiration is gone, then Mariah could take a longer break. One more album would be nice. Caution shouldn't be the last.
