MC songwriting (113,981)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
Do you remember when MC's songwriting took a downward fall on Memoirs because she had to write lyrics to match The-Dream's melody and lyrics on his demo? Some critics called her out on that. Her vocals and lyrics were not that great on Memoirs. Fast forward to MIAM and this one reviewer said MC got the memo for MIAM. Her vocals and lyrics improved from Memoirs because she wrote about her broken marriage to Nick and motherhood. MC has been very unhappy for a while not being in love and having a family unit for Roc and Roe. Bryan gave her stability and love when they were together. It seems like MC lost motivation in the studio during the seven years it took her to complete HFIA because of her vocal decline. I hope she can find love again during the recording of MC17.

MC songwriting (113,980)

I think she opened up with Here for It All (the song), but the rest of the album have generic lyrics because she doesn't want to open up. She can't keep in singing about things from 30 years ago, which is her way of hiding.
Why can't she write about motherhood, about the hardships of being alone without partner, about aging, about being viewed differently by the public. It would her to sing some lines and thoughts in The Meaning of Mariah.
But I think she is scared. Frankly it's easier to write experiences for a book matter-of-factly, than put emotions into those words through a song, because she is an artist.

Bill, I don't feel MC is ready to just be a songwriter for Ariana or another artist. Did you see that she went back into the studio with JD and Bryan-Michael Cox yesterday? MC17 just might be in our hands next year.

I can't even begin to imagine how she must feel having to lip sync everything, and spend literal years in a studio to make an album that vocally wasn't good at all, when 30 years ago she could sing effortlessly, and brought the house down with her performances.
The reality is her voice is completely damaged beyond repair. At this point, it doesn't even matter if the reason is alcohol, medication, improper care, nodules, over singing etc. Her gift has gone and whether that was down to her arrogantly squandering it, or for reasons beyond her control I don't think we will ever know.
But keeping up this charade must psychologically take its toll. That is why I have always said it would be better that she admits defeat, gracefully bows out, and spends her remaining years writing. Imagine her writing an entire album for Ariana? It would be Ariana's dream, and MC could live vicariously through someone that can sing as well as she once could.

Lara, you make some valid points in your post. I miss hearing MC use those higher order vocabulary words in her lyrics. It must hurt MC that her studio sessions are not what they used to be. I guess that is why she stopped posting photos on X and Instagram. She was improving vocally until she had to let the world know about her bipolar diagnosis. Disclosing her diagnosis did something to MC emotionally and physically.

Her voice is seriously damaged from all these years, which is somehow expected. And her writing skills are nowhere where they're used to be, and that is probably from her medication literally blocking her brain. Most bipolar artists get creative during (hypo)mania episodes and the medication work on blocking those (among with the depressive ones). Mariah knows it but can't do anything about it, I guess that explains the lack of energy we see. Don't expect anything more from her, at this point I don't know if she's still enjoying making music with all her limitations.

Mariah Carey doesn't show up for longtime collaborator (113,963)

Jake, have you forgotten about Someone To Hold/Make You Happy by Trey Lorenz, Head Over Heels/Last Chance by Allure, Don't Go Looking For Love by Blaque, After by 7 Mile, I Lose Control by Penny Ford, Help Me Find a Way to Your Heart by Darryl Hall, Get Like Me by School Gyrls, and Where Are You Christmas by Faith Hill? These are great songs MC has written for other artists.

It's crazy that Mariah was first recognized by Songwriter Hall of Fame first, when she's not even writing anything anymore. Her latest album took maybe 10 years to write, and I love the album and all, but that does really warrant a Hall of Fame award?
Mariah is a great writer, written so many great songs, and from the very beginning of her career she wanted to be known for that, not just her voice, because that's what really separates her from the great divas. And she never stopped talking about how she writes constantly and it's a passion of hers and all.
But she's not even writing anymore. She's not written a great song for other artists, which is really the mark of a great writer, someone who can write for others. This is the part of her career that is so lacking.
Mariah, if you want to be known for being a great writer, then write.

My humble opinion. It is obvious that the Summerball was lipped. All Christmas concerts are lipped lately. Except a few snippets are live or prerecorded. There are many vocal coaches who analyse MC's voice of the 90s and also the actual voice. [They] explain the situation respectfully and realistically on YouTube. It does not mean that MC does not have a voice anymore. But it is obvious to see that the voice is not the same anymore. And it does not have to be either. Her vocal chords are strained. If you have injured your knee playing soccer for many years that can happen unfortunately. Mariah is experiencing the same somehow. We are not bashing her. I think she still can release albums in the future. And sing in her healthy and lower vocal range. Like in her last album [Here for it all]. And make the best with that what is still possible. In the studio she can make her pauses when she needs to. On a tour you have to function very well. And the mental pressure raises. With that pressure she gets anxious and insecure and looks stiff. Also it has a large impact on her stage presence because she has to control many things at the same time. I guess also Gamma does not support her well and let her down. In this business no one cares what you're going through. Unfortunately.

Everything Fades Away (113,951)
by Bobby A from United States

MC is missing a real business team. She hasn't had that type of team around her since Memoirs. Wouldn't it be a shocker if Scooter Braun took over as MC's manager and her career reaches new career highs six months prior to releasing MC17? I believe Scooter Braun would be an unlikely choice for a manager, but a necessary one.

Yes, I used her Music Box album filler song to describe the current status of our queen's glamorous life. Come on, lambs. You cannot expect her to be the '90s Mariah. She's way past that. It's already written in history. Her glittery music career is taking its natural course. The peaks and valleys, and another set of peaks and valleys, had happened already. I am not saying she may not peak again. She may, but also may not, depending on her choices and the public's. However, let's face the hard reality that she's slowly fading away, at least the music she's putting out there recently. Everything fades like Aretha, Whitney, Janet, Madonna, and even Celine, Britney, and Christina A. They are no longer the singers they used to be, and neither is Mariah Carey. We can only hope for and pray for another peak, but we can also choose to be truthful, be happy, and content with the contribution she already made in the industry, the history she has written, and enjoy the songs and albums she worked really hard to put out there for us to enjoy forever.
Mariah can still do what she does to stay relevant. She was born to do it. However, we may put our expectations realistically. Her voice can never be the same. She's effing 57 years old and not 27, may I remind everyone? And singers can still sing in their old age, but not the way they sounded when they were young. Our speaking voice naturally loses its strength, much like the singing voice. It's a hard truth that we all need to accept instead of being disillusioned about her voice and singing career. Whether we like it or not, her light gradually dims, and she can only extend this before it completely fades, depending on the choices she makes in life. Everything eventually fades away.

I agree. She lost her spark. Her voice seems seriously damaged. When she does appearances she seems frozen, probably from her medications but she'll only leave us speculating. She likes to remind people she's a songwriter but imagine having a lyric insert like the old albums, Caution and HFIA wouldn't stand a candle to her previous works. Her attitude of ensemble and make up and all the glamour and glitz doesn't help, people want someone relatable. I miss her girl next door days, even the Honey and TEOM days she had that kind vibe that I cannot find in any recent video. Something drastically changed and she doesn't want to share it. Unless she was always that shallow silicone Barbie and was showed the other way at her beginnings? That is so hard to believe. Anyway all this won't matter, she made it and she's enjoying it, I just hope she's happy where she is now.

MC 2017? (113,935)
by nancy from Switzerland

I am not sure about MC 2017. As long she keeps holding the following attitude: I think Ive done enough, and I don't acknowledge time, there will be difficulties to get things done. And collaborators more likely abandon her after a specific time. I also see problems with her personality. This air of superiority that she has with other ladies in the business. Muni Long, Tory Kelly. The "I don't know her" nonsense is getting ridiculous. The Eminem feud. Other artists like Patty Labelle, Chaka Khan don't see themselves as divas. They see themselves as singers. "In another class from those ladies" is another statement from Mariah that shows her lacking of motivation. I know it is only a song. But a little truth could be in those lyrics. Celine Dion starts again and she has a chronic illness. But I see a world of motivation, sincerity, love and hope in her eyes. In MC s eyes I see LV, Gucci, Nobu and halfhearted Christmas non live performances. Sorry for that but this is my opinion. And there are a lot of people around me that say she is so lazy and ask me if I still stick to Mariah. And that makes me sad. Because I know she is one of the biggest stars.

Death Becomes Her (113,927)
by Bobby A from United States
| |

MC might look sad for a lot of reasons that we can only speculate here. I believe she is being hard on herself for the lack of a top 15 or better Hot 100 song. Do you remember how happy she looked when TMB and #Beautiful were riding the charts? I hope what she is working on in the studio for MC17 will give her a Hot 100 hit song again. MC wants it one more time for sure. This is just my two cents this weekend because I want MC back on top again. Lol.

Looking at those pictures of MC in the white dress, makes me a little sad. When I was younger, I hoped that she would age with grace and not fall into this plastic fantastic world of celebrities. Yes, she looks "youthful", but it is not her face anymore. It's like looking at a completely different person, when you compare her 1992 face and now. It looks sad, hurt and soulless. Anyone seen the movie Death Becomes Her?

They're neighbors in Calabasas. Kris was one of the people Mariah sent her book to. We can assume she's aware of MC's lack of family support growing up and so I actually appreciated when she rallied the whole entire Kardashian clan to see a Christmas show. Kris' own words: "I'm so blessed and grateful for our friendship." We'll probably just leave it at that. They seem sweet and they really show up for you.

I'm so over Mariah being doped up on the meds, it's so sad and cringe. No other artist or celebrity is as robotic and controlled as she is. I mean if that's what it takes to contain her bipolar disorder it's not worth it. She is not even the same Mariah 6 years ago. Also that Andrea woman that is always with her needs to chill. I get that she's doing her job and is earning her paycheck but when I saw a clip of Mariah talking with Kim K she couldn't even have a conversation because Andrea popped up and was giving the hint to Mariah to move along. Is she with her 24/7? Does anyone else agree with me?

If an artist has one song that returns to No. 1 globally every single year for decades, that's not irrelevance - that's cultural permanence. Most artists would love to have one song with that level of longevity. Mariah has an entire career plus the biggest modern Christmas song. Being relevant every December for 30+ years is still being relevant.

You're welcome Syed. I feel MC knows that the anniversary release of Glitter with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at helm could be the prelude to MC17 being her second comeback. The look and style MC gave the world at the Gucci event should be what MC goes for MC17. She should lose the gowns and heels for a more grown and sexy album cover for MC17. Why not? Cher did it in 1998 with Believe. Remember how the Believe album and Cher's beauty relaunced her career.

What a breath of fresh air MCA is (113,849)

Hey everyone. I never knew about this site until today. I can't begin to tell you how refreshing it is to see actual conversations about our queen as opposed to an endless barrage of GIF's and emoji's under every Mariah post on Facebook, Insta, etc. And well articulated conversations - at that. I might not completely agree with every comment I've read, I think 1 or 2 border on overly critical, but it's good to see a diverse mixture of opinions from Lambs, without overt censorship.
I agree with some of the viewpoints here that Mariah increasingly does not seem like her usual self these days. It may be her condition, a side effect of medication, or past (and recent) trauma resurfacing, a combination of all the above, or... something unrelated. As Lambs, the best thing we can do is to support Mariah in any we we can. Because that's what she did for us through countless songs such as: Hero, Can't take that away, Make it happen, and so many others. We also need to overlook any behaviors we might not agree with because A) It's hard to trust anything you see online anymore (thanks AI) and media never shows us the true picture, only a distorted version that "sells" better. And B) We are not in her shoes, as much as we may think we know her, we only know her through the lens of the media, mostly. What she may be going through or battling internally and how they might manifest outwardly are things we need to be mindful of. Just be kind. As she has always been to us.
What do I feel could help? Well... if I had a magic wand I'd whisk Mariah away to a place where she could spend some time being in touch with nature, walk down a street without being recognized, and feel genuine excitement reconnecting with the simple things in life. It may not solve everything but I could literally guarantee that she'd feel a positive difference. Call it intuition (I share a lot of uncanny coincidences with Mariah) or just my observation of Mariah over the years and knowing the person she is beneath the exterior.
About me: - Lamb since 1993 - when I first heard Dreamlover in a clothes store. - I can confidently say I wouldn't be where I am today, without her music to help me through so many rough times. - Creator of the "40 Hidden Mariah songs challenge" which is a tribute to Mimi plus fun Easter Egg hunt for the Lambily, you can catch it here if you'd like to try solving it. - Recorded and released my own song in 2 languages based on a wish to "pay forward" what Mariah's music did for me, with a song that gives others hope. Took me just 20 years to make it happen.
Have a great weekend everyone and again really nice to meet you all.

TEOM era Mariah is back. I am sure being in the studio has ignited something in MC. Let's hope that I am right.

Wow. I adore this outfit. Mariah should be wearing this kind of clothes all the time.

Congratz to MC for topping the Gospel charts (113,809)

Jesus I Do has the potential to become as big as Shackles (Praise You) by Mary Mary. Urban AC spins are increasing everyday. We just need MC and the Clark Sisters to perform it live in June.

Should MC release a part two album (113,793)

I think MC's recent meetings with Sylvia Rhone and Jimmy Jam and Terry is a huge sign that she is looking for guidance to ensure MC17 returns her to the top of the charts.

I think MC's next album should be a part two to one of her biggest selling or Lambs' favorite albums from 2005-2018. I would love a Memoirs or Caution part two. The public excitement might be what MC's career needs to take the world back in time when her music made people say hmmm. I think Memoirs: The Final Chapter has a nice sound to it.
