Music Box vs Daydream (108,933)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Lyrically, I prefer Daydream, but vocally, Music Box reigns supreme in my book. While her voice on Daydream was like pure butter, smooth, nuanced, and mature, on Music Box, it was fuller, more powerful and with a richness difficult to match. Mariah Carey, Music Box, and Merry Christmas are the only albums where Mariah came closest to matching Whitney’s level of resonance and vocal power.
Daydream still featured incredible vocals, strong, expressive, and technically refined, but it leaned more into buttery tone and artistic subtlety rather than sheer vocal force. As an overall body of work, Daydream was more mature and creatively sophisticated than Music Box, but vocally, Music Box was a powerhouse.
As much as I love myself some Music Box, Daydream is the better album in my humble opinion.

I actually believe the human singing voice is perfected through Mariah. She can quite literally do everything and more. God was like: "She's just gonna sound out of this world, in every register, and her songwriting will blow everyone out of the water, oh and I'll put her in charge of my holiday." Her voice is a literal gift from the heavens above but it also came with a bit of a curse. Mariah has nodules. Her ability to whistle eventually worsened her nodules. Her voice was the money maker, because she was poor and is deeply afraid of the rug being pulled from under her. She worked her voice to the extremes. Songwriting also happen to make bank in royalties so she went crazy hard on that too. She simply overworked her gifts. End end. These nose jobs and alcoholism theories sound so elementary. No other singer will have a similar decline diagnoses because Mariah is simply built different. A cut above the rest.

Also, add to the fact that when she was forced to stop drinking (while she was pregnant), her tone and clarity improved to a point that I would dare say, we haven't heard since Glitter.

If you're going to be a "Yass Queen", at least own it with pride. Facts don't care about your feelings, they remain facts, whether you like them or not. And clearly, for some of you, the truth is like kryptonite.
It's well documented that Mariah Carey indulged in heavy drinking, especially around the time leading up to the release of Butterfly. Her voice was never quite the same afterward. She's been drunk in public many times, so it's not like she had a secret. While it may not have been his place to speak on it, even her brother mentioned that she was drinking while on her bipolar meds. Eminem, in his track The Warning, didn't hold back either, outright calling her an alcoholic. Say what you want, but the receipts have been there for a long time.
And as much as I love Mariah, with the state of her voice today, she wouldn't even make it to audition in front of the judges on American Idol. Her voice is completely shot. But of course, in La La Land, she's still "slaying". Reality, however, paints a very different picture.

Happy anniversary (108,930)
by Tevin from USA

TJ, Music Box is a great album also. It's even better with the anniversary deluxe edition, but, Daydream is still peak Mariah. I feel like it perfectly blends the commercial success and pop appeal of MB and the artistry of Butterfly. It's perfection. Rounding out my top three would be: 2. Butterfly 3.TEOM

Is there any other singer? (108,906)
by Tevin from USA

I was wondering, other than normal age, wear and tear on a voice. Do you all know of any other singer, who's voice pretty much changed with each album, like Mariah's did? Not including child singers like MJ when he first started, since their voices change with age.

Mariah Carey had 50-11 nose jobs but still insecure about "bad side"? (108,905)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
I thought the changes that took place during Daydream era, was more of a stylistic choice rather than any vocal changes or issues. Plus didn't she start lowering the keys of most of her songs that era, in order to be able to hit crazier and more dramatic high notes?

I'm surprised more people don't notice the difference from Merry Christmas to Daydream vocally. Most sight Butterfly as when he voice began to decline and change, but for me Daydream was the beginning of the end. It was just masked by good songs, good production, and confidence on the stage when performing. Main call-outs for you all to review is that her melisma became disjointed, most noticeable on songs like I Am Free. She breaks it up rather than just singing straight through the melody like she did on all her albums beforehand. Then all the body from her voice went too, best displayed by When I Saw You and Long Ago. She still sounds great but there was a very noticeable shift at this point. As this was before her alcoholism then the nose job would be the most likely cause for the change.

Obviously medicated (108,848)
by Tevin from USA

I agree. Though we will never know what's truly going on with MC, until she speaks out about it, I too am worried. Hopefully it's just a side effect of meds that will eventually wear off or she can changes dosages or meds (I'm no doctor). I remember when two close friends of mine had to go on meds for bipolar, when they were in them, they were completely different people. They acted much like this, drowsy, out of it, in a daze, not all there. Mariah we love you.

Obviously medicated (108,845)
by Carlos from Brazil

I think it's really safe to say that she is using medication. I used to take some anti depression remedies and it really kinda "takes your soul out". It's necessary for the case, in terms of "you need it to get better" to a certain point and then maybe reduce or get rid of it when you get well but it really lets you on a deplorable state. You just go through life and the emotions like it's nothing. Mariah's last answer to the reporter when asked about what a popstar like Katy has to do when you get hate or something really tells it all. She said "don't pay attention and move on". I think she hasn't really stopped and thought about her situation: her voice, the lost of her family. It's like she just thinks "let's move on" and then she just goes through life.

MIMI 20 incomplete (108,552)

Let me start off on a positive note, I'm glad Mariah is doing something to celebrate the anniversary of this amazing album. As much as I loved Mariah growing up, this album truly made me a huge fan of hers. Now with that being said, I'm going to need Mariah to reach into that vault and find a hidden demo or track from that album. Lol. I'm excited to hear the a capella version of Circles, but other than that, everything else is just remixes. Many of them have been released or leaked years ago. I was really hoping for something new. But who knows, maybe she'll have more surprises coming. Anyone know the code for Pepsi Headquarters vault? We need those ringtones released.

I disagree about E=MC2 not being a vocal high, especially Thanx4Nothing, I love that octave change and sustained note at the end. You can't tell me I can't sing when I'm belting that out. And of course, y'all are tired of me saying it, but the final chorus and ad libs of y'all least favorite single Bye Bye are legendary to me. I will give you 5 points for Mine Again which is beautiful.

I heard that same thing mentioned by other people, including Mariah herself. But it just doesn't make sense to me, TEOM had WBT, ILT, FLB and of course the gem that is Mine Again (which I personally would say is one of her best vocally sung studio songs in her entire discography). Compare that to Thanks 4 Nothing, and IWYW on E=MC2. The vocals just don't compare. Maybe her voice was more consistent during E=MC2 but TEOM has better vocal highs.

I said it's only a matter of time before this gets mainstream attention. Hopefully she gets it together for the remaining shows and puts this issue to rest. If she is not up to performing right now with the energy needed to put on a show, she doesn't need to be performing at all. Period.

Hindsight is 20/20, to be honest, looking back, please don't crucify me for saying this, but I'm glad Charmbracelet didn't do well. Otherwise we may not have had the dominant TEOM and early E=MC2 eras, where Mariah completely ruled the airwaves for 2 years.

For me Charmbracelet is another outlier album. What do you think if 7 Aurelius and Dre and Vidal were the only producers on Charmbracelet? They could have really made Charmbracelet sell more copies and not been such a disjointed album in my opinion. I feel that Lyor Cohen gave MC some bad advice by telling her to choose Through the Rain as the first single. Charmbracelet was an great album, but it could have been better.
