Daydream is now Mariah's biggest album (105,832)

It's so deserved. I love everything about Daydream. I became a fan because of Daydream. When I heard "Fantasy" on the radio back then I was enchanted. I bought the album and I still remember the day. I was so happy, I still have the original cassette. "Always be my baby", "One Sweet Day", "Open Arms", "Forever", " Melt away", "Long Ago", "Underneath the stars", "Daydream Interlude" and the incredible "Looking in". Isn't it unbelievable? For me it is and always will be the ultimate Mariah album. It is the perfect mix of Pop and RnB. That album caused Mariah mania. Daydream is deep in my heart.

Surpassing Music Box. Isn't that incredible? Time really is the true test of everything. Mariah has always referred to Music Box whenever she's talking about a time to massive success and sales peaks, but never about Daydream.
Listening to whole Daydream album, it really sounds so fresh and it flows perfectly from one song to another. Fantasy alone is one of the most perfect pop songs ever made. It's so timeless.

"She should be studied in Music School, I believe some already have." So true. Here's a little story. In the late 90ies I brought cd's of Mariah to my music teacher. He was a young and very nice teacher. It ended up that we as a school class were listening to "Hero" and "Everything fades away". Can you imagine how cool that was? My teacher loved Mariah's voice.

I think her confidence would be much higher and thus likely to release music more often, do more live performances and be in the spotlight a lot more. It's a shame we have to go so long without hearing new music but we'll always have her extensive catalogue and nobody will take that away or forget her. She should be studied in Music School, I believe some already have. The Mariah Carey course has a nice ring to it. She's unique in a lot of ways, always imitated but never duplicated. My all time favorite artist.

I heard it too, that because of J.D. "We belong together" is sung in full-voice. It was more than a good decision. Thank you J.D. People who only say yes to everything aren't helpful. Plus yes-man are often people who are not nice at all, only a façade to get what they want. Oh yes, Celine Dion was clever to listen to the advise with "My heart will go on". I remember 97 as it was yesterday. I was a teen and I loved "My heart will go on". I still have the single and soundtrack cd. Lol. I went to the Titanic movie two times with friends. What a wonderful time that was. The carefree 90ies. I miss them.

Rumor has it MC wanted to sing WBT with whisper vocals and JD insisted on full voice vocals. Can you imagine that song as a whisper track? Perish the thought. Yikes. MC is a masterpiece. But like all of us isn't perfect. Even the greatest basketball player, Michael Jordan, said all the shots he missed made him better. I mean, the guy was cut from his high school basketball team. I'll always advocate MC keep realists on her team, people not afraid to say no to Mariah. Shoot, Celine didn't want to sing My Heart Will Go On and ultimately gave in and did it. Good decision, don't ya think?

It's really a dumb argument. I'm not good at cooking for example lol, but I appreciate and recognize a good meal, a good cook and restaurant. I'm not a movie director, but I'm a cineast. By the way I have knowledge of music, my grand-dad was an opera singer. He sang the Caruso songs and other classics. But if someone thinks the rapper Latto and Ariana Grande are wonderful than it's fine. We all have our different tastes. That's good, what a boring world it would be if we had all the same. Nowadays it's trendy to only allow the own opinion. Intolerant and boring.

Of course it's not about what I want. I just meant not every fan was hoping for this remix. If you enjoy it, fantastic. With the chart-driven thing, I don't get it. Because Mariah broke allready every record. Why not release the inner soul-artist she's in my eyes too.

Sometimes it's not about what you want. Mariah isn't a puppet that you can control the strings to. If you don't understand what a Top 10 hit on Billboard would mean for Mariah then you really don't know Mariah. Because she's always chosen hits and charts above anything else. I believe deep down inside she's a real musician, a soul artist, but she's very much driven by success. It's the American way. If you want more Mariah you have to give her incentive. Stream and buy.

I've never asked or wanted a song or remix with Ariana. I don't like the music from Miss Grande. The same with Cardi B. (even worse). I want real musicians like Jazz/Blues and Soul singers or a band with real instruments. People like James Poyser are also a win. Trends will come and go, but quality music will stay forever. I enjoy the song "Portrait" again lately, I almost get some Stevie Wonder vibes from a part of the melody. Mariah's "You and I" version is heavenly. That's my kind of music.

I remember coming to this board for years with people asking for an up tempo Mariah pop song with big vocals. Even Max Martin produced. Some even suggested the impossible, that she's on a track with Ariana Grande. Now we have exactly what everyone has asked for and the success it could find going into the top 10 would be huge. Streaming is easy. Buying is too but this is the day to do it. I've made it easy with two links for us here. Ariana's website and Amazon's new release page.

General public or bad decisions (105,618)
by MusicfanJ from Germany
| |
|

Great post Jamie. I love considerations. I think it's a bit of all things you mentioned, her "music change" during Butterfly, the Glitter debacle with the public breakdown and later some wrong decisions by the management and Mariah (if she was involved in album single choices, I don't know). As you said Mariah could do no wrong in the 90ies. She was like a music princess, loved by almost everyone and even people who didn't like her style of singing only had respect for her. I think what really caused damage was the image after 2001. Friends often told me back than "what's going on with Mariah, her dressing, behavior etc." They also didn't understand her humour and diva antics. A lot of people still don't get it. I always tell them, she's just playing a role like an actress. It's more for fun and a little self-protection.

General public or bad decisions (105,612)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
I'm sat here and a thought came into my head regarding Mariah and her career. For the majority of the 1990's Mariah could do no wrong, she was America's sweetheart and had countless number one songs and albums. People took her into their hearts and adored her. From 1997 she made what some call a drastic change in musical direction and lost some of her core fanbase as a result. However she continued to have number one songs and albums even through a difficult time with Sony and Tommy Mottola. Why was it then that during her most difficult time in her life in 2001 did people turn their backs on her? Surely someone who they had grown to love had spent so long adoring her and buying her music would want to support her during this difficult time. Glitter and Charmbracelet failed to sell anywhere near what she would normally sell. My point is, is it the general public who turn on an artist so quickly, is it the music industry and media that set current trends what is a hit and what the people want or is it bad decisions made by Mariah the artist. For me it's just difficult to understand how such a quick switch in popularity can happen with someone who was literally a force of nature at one point. Firstly I don't think the whole Glitter film helped her persona one bit, 9/11 didn't help but the film just wasn't good enough 9/11 or not. The album or soundtrack is great but in hindsight should it have been left on the shelf once the film tanked to help control the damage from the film and save her also having a music flop too which was unheard of at the time. Would her next album then have been more well received by the public. For me I like Charmbracelet but it feels almost like a complete different body of work to the rest of her catalogue (present and past included) the whole vibe is just different. Were bad decisions made by Mariah creatively should she have come back with an upbeat track ala Fantasy/Honey mode and had less rappers on the album, it would be interesting to see if the Glitter album hadn't been released and she had come back with a stronger album (maybe a combination of Glitter tracks and new ones and called it something else) how her popularity would have been at that time and now. Or had the public already turned their backs on her and changed their view of her as a person. Obviously we had Emancipation but that was very short lived, and since then with the exception of Touch My Body and Christmas she hasn't got anywhere near the popularity she should have had. Do you think the general public just doesn't warm to her anymore, is it Mariah's decisions of music creativity or the way her persona has come across post 2001, or do you think it's the music industry making wrong decisions for her career? We can't change what happens but sometimes it's interesting to put a different spin on how we think things could have gone or been. Would love to hear your views and where you think things went wrong or could have been different for her.

"Like I said, I think Mariah did it just to return a favor, dipped her toes, but didn't completely jump in." That's what I believe too. I'm waiting for a song only by Mariah. I don't want another young "trendy" singer or rapper. Just pure Mariah, no matter if it will be jazz, gospel or rnb. Just Mariah. Is it too much to ask for? I think not.

From what I am reading, Ariana stans aren't 100% on board with the song itself. If lambs had high expectations for MC, imagine their expectations for Ariana who is supposed to be a more current of an artist and had been gone for a long time. They expect Ariana to give Taylor a run for her money and this is just not it.
So that's the whirlwind of negativity that Mariah's hopping into. Not to mention the cheating and homewrecker allegations.
Lambs should just enjoy the song and not get involved in that mess lol. It's not yet taking off, but I think it's a good addition to Mariah's remix catalog.
Like I said, I think Mariah did it just to return a favor, dipped her toes, but didn't completely jump in.

Self-love and empowerment are better found in lyrics like Hero, Through the Rain, My Saving Grace, Fly Like a Bird and so on. It's a shame the woman who wrote lyrics like those found on Outside, Butterfly, My All, Looking In and Petals now sings about riding a D.
I'll go back to playing Selfish on repeat all day.

Yes, And? lyrics (105,541)
by MusicfanJ from Germany

Excatly. I'm 39, and to put the f. word and other cencored words aren't art to me. It cheapens a pop song. The language of today is often vulgar enough. I find it childish and not necessary. It's my right to not like it. If other ones enjoy those lyrics fine. Tastes are different, especially in art. I prefer lyrics like "Butterfly". Poetic, energizing, touching. Honey, My All and Fantasy are great too. And "Touch my body" is just fun with the video hilarius.

I'm a 46 year old adult who doesn't care for profane-laced lyrics. Spare me the "it's art" argument. It's an old and often overused reason to justify such unnecessary decisions. The song is just fine without it. Why add it? Makes zero sense to me.

The local radio played Beys "Texas hold em" yesterday. The clean version. The radio presenter was praising the song. I think the song really works for the radio. With "yes and" I'm not so sure. Radio seems to be passing on the remix. I have checked other major radio stations' "Recently Played" section today and the remix is not being played. They are still playing the original. These radio programmers know if the remix is played what it would mean for MC. I am afraid it is going to be difficult for MC to ever get back to her 90s heyday radio airplay ruled by today's radio dynamic four of Doja Cat (I can't stand her music), Jack Harlow, Sza, and Taylor Swift.

I had to think of Madonna too. Lol. House and a little En Vogue vibe. Yes, who would have thought? I think the teens will like the remix. I don't feel this song. Maybe mostly because I don't like the music from Ariana in general. I also don't need the f. in lyrics. Luckily I have the MB 30 where the lyrics are wonderful. Plus the remix of "Working hard" which is a hundred times better than this. Just my humble opinion.

I don't hate the remix but there are three things that surprise me. The first is that this song sounds very much like a Madonna song and I never in a million years thought Mariah would go there. Secondly, why did Mariah not try and blend in with Ariana's vocals (in the same way Brandy did on The Roof), it would have been more pleasing to the ear. Mariah's shouty adlibs could have been better executed and more melodic. Finally, Mariah needs to lay off the auto tune, it's not even subtle. This remix feels rushed and I would be even more surprised if it reached #1.

I understand what you mean. Unfortunately I'm not happy at all too about a feature for a Ariana song. I never liked her music and her presentation. Mariah is strong enough alone. Doing jazz music, a gospel song, a real lead single like Fantasy, Honey. So I still have to wait for new Mariah music by her own. So thank u, next becomes a whole new meaning musicwise.

Ariana Grande's announcement about the remix for Yes, And? forced me to go on YouTube and listen to the damn song. It is that how much I do not care about Ariana Grande. Never liked her, even on Oh Santa. I only listen to Mariah's solo version. I was hoping that this news was fake, but I guess I was wrong. I will explain and this is only my personal belief. I an old school Mariah fan. Call me delusional or whatever, but I really do not like when she is someone's feature or doing a remix, because I still think that she can stand as an artist by herself and still be relevant by herself. I am not talking here about duets or she having someone in a song (rapper or whatever). It is her being a feature on someone else's song that I am not a fan off. Especially when the song is lame and boring, such as Yes, And? Again, this is only my personal taste. I didn't like her on Latto's Big Energy - just spoiled the fantasy for me and made it cheap and vulgar. Again, my personal taste. I didn't like her doing French Montana's Unforgettable - why? What was the purpose of that? #Beautiful? I will never get over having Miguel on that song and him singing almost every thing as like she is his feature. I know I will get a lot hate for this but these are my views and I am really disappointed with this collaboration. If only the song was good. And ear candy. I just don't get it.

Hate to break it to you, but Mariah will not release anything this year. There, I said it. It's 10 years since the release of MIAMTEC, Mariah has only released 1 studio album (Caution). She is completely wasting her annual Christmas hype. I am shocked once again, that January passed and she had nothing to capitalize on it. She's doing this game every year. So I don't really see this year being any different. Don't count on it, you're just going to be disappointed. Unfortunately, I think Mariah is surrounded by the wrong people.

"Save the day" is the only Mariah song I don't like. I really tried but the song just dosen't connect with me. I love "Kiliing me softly" and the original by Roberta Flack but even the great sample doesn't save "Save the day". With 100% I only have it on mp3 and rarely listen to it. But Mariah's music catalogue is really overwhelming. The joy and discovering never stop. For every mood a song and memories.

Who is Caution about? (105,168)

Good questions. I do believe that Ben was in love with Mariah. Who could not in 90? But of course we don't know. I can't remember from the book too. I have the original in English and it was not easy to read as an non-native speaker. So maybe some of you know more from the chapter of her book?
I think if Tommy wasn't so controlling, it could have worked out. At least longer than it did. It's really a tragic "love story". Yes, Glitter wouldn't have happened.
I have to listen to Caution today. "Giving me Life" is so cool. Could it be about Derek Jeter because of the Norma Jean reference like Marilyn and Joe DiMaggio?

I was only thinking about Ben Margulies the other day. Do you think he was infatuated with Mariah and that's why he was side lined? Seems odd that he co wrote her first three singles all going to number one. I may have forgotten something from the book, it's a while since I read it and I'm old lol. Was it the start of Tommy's control?
Was also curious the other day, had Mariah not wanted to break out into R&B at the time would her marriage to Tommy have lasted longer? She clearly says in Petals that she really loved him. If he'd not been so controlling I wonder if they could have worked for longer. Relationships are complicated things and sometimes it's a case of two people being out the worst in each other but you can still truly love the person. Had they lasted longer in be interested to see what her next couple of albums would have been like, Glitter wouldn't have happened, whilst bipolar is generally inherited (I have it myself) she may not have had such a severe breakdown and maybe would not have as many issues now.
This is just me thinking hypothetically I'm just interested in peoples spin on things.

Oh yes that's true. Facts, science and the nature are not welcomed by sects.

I love it too. Smooth and just a pleasure for the ears. Mariah is wonderful in singing jazz. And yes, this should be on an album.

I just love her version of Nevertheless (I'm in love with you.) MC, if you're listening as a favor to a longtime fan, please record this song and put it on your next album.

Article: Mariah shows off physique in sparkling "swimwear" (105,122)

I've always loved her mystery. She was a complete mystery to me back in 95/96 especially and also in 97. I remember when Butterfly was released, it was so much fun to discover all the people she worked with (Puffy aka P.Diddy, Mase, Missy, Sisco, Brian McKnight). So yes, I hope we get some surprises. Just for the nostalgia.

Robert, I think Mariah should keep her mouth shut like back in the day when we didn't have to know everything. It was more exciting when we discovered collaborations and producers a few days before albums were released. I just hope she has videos, remixes and a plan by the time she drops the album. Mariah used to have a veil of mystery around her, I hope she brings that back.

Tevin, I just wanted to say you've got a beautiful new avatar. Beautiful Mariah. With the new album I'm for quality over quantity. I'm really excited for new music by MC.
