And here I thought Andrew doesn't live for our validation because he is so much better with his taste in music and his worldly views.

I'm glad it's not only me who isn't a fan of Charmbracelet. I hardly ever listen to it except for "The One". It seems to be a huge fan favorite.

Album ideas (104,915)
by Bobby A from United States

MC should make her first true R&B jazz adult contemporary album to reach masses again. I was thinking today she is going to have to release an album with a cohesive group of live musicians who can give her a new sound so she can improvise live. Improvisation is her strength that no one else can do quite like MC. Remember the mop the floor song during one of the Christmas shows. Also, I believe MC16 is going to be the album that is going to be the true follow-up to Butterfly. I felt cheated and disappointed with Rainbow and Charmbracelet being released after the brillant Butterfly album. I know that I am not the only one who felt cheated and disappointed in 1999 and 2002.

Missy Elliot (104,913)

STN is also a skip for me. I love the beat of "Babydoll", I love the lyrics too. It paints a picture, you can visualise the lyrics, it's like a diary entry. And I think it fits perfectly into the "Butterfly". Babydoll also reminds me of "Crybaby". They are ofcourse very different songs but both seem like entries from the diary of Mariah's sleepless nights.

What I like about "Babydoll" is the beat, it hits hard. In my humble opinion, it's a way better song than "Stay the Night" which I always skip.

JLo Hummingbird = Butterfly (104,912)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

"Gowns, beautiful gowns" is all I have to say about JLo at this point. I was reading how she blatantly copied songs not just Mariah's she stole from Usher too. Then she basically passed of other singer's vocals in her demo as her own. Since I became a lamb I have a special respect for singers who are "artists" and songwriters and people who genuinely are passionate about their craft. JLo is definitely among those.

When it comes to music, Jennifer's always been like many other artists, a product. She can dance and somewhat act, but music is not one of her talents. She's accomplished whatever she has accomplished because of Selena. Had Selena been here with us today, Jennifer wouldn't be known. I've enjoyed her fist two albums and I actually like her. She sadly got caught up in Tommy's game.

JLo has not had a single original idea since the day she came into the limelight. Her lack of artistry and vision and talent baffles me. I don't get her appeal. She blatantly copied Mariah in a lot of things. Her only call to fame is she's got a good stylist so she stays relevant for her fashion and her "JLo Glow".

Her album roll out is such a carbon copy of Butterfly it's uncanny. Now she's adopting a hummingbird motif on her album and in her vinyl and album covers posing the same way MC did with hair and lighting like the epic Butterfly cover. She definitely has been studying MC and is doing the most. Unfortunately all she could hope for is emulating the looks because her music is grating.

I will not stand for the "Babydoll" slander. That song is amazing. (For clarification for some people's mind where I live rent free - no I don't want an album full of Babydoll but I 100% enjoy the the song till date). It was peak 90s R&B vibes.

Hmmm. Babydoll was a bit of snoozefest to be honest, with Mariah mumbling all the way through and the dated production. I'd rather she ditch the collabs and focus on constructing melodic, captivating songs like she did in the glory days.

Lopez is as mundane as they come. But Mariah risks retaking the mundane crown should she listen to the lambs who are in favour of her working with The Dreary once more and releasing soporific songs like Ribbon. You have to worry about some people for they know not what they do. Or they simply haven't got a clue.

Memoirs is gonna have its 15th anniversary this year and wow time flies. Might be an unpopular opinion but I love Memoirs through and through. It's a shame the album wasn't a huge success. It had so many amazing songs. Some of which were so different from Mariah's usual sound. UOOMF with Nicki should have been a hit, they both killed it on the song. Obsessed was so fun and fresh. I love the ballads. "More than just friends" should have been released as a single and same for BGK. I love "Ribbon" too and its unreleased remix. "Inseparable" was a cute moment too. Basically I think it's one of those albums where I would have the least of any skips. I also wish the "H.A.T.E.U" remix was released properly and the general public knew about it. Anyways wanted to show my love for Memoirs a great album which unfortunately fell through the cracks.

Songs in the Key of MC is a great album title. Songs in a Minor was released 23 years ago and Alicia Keys is not relevant anymore. Her album was the last thing that came to mind. God forbid she ends up naming the new album Pantyhose or Mimi Longstockings.

Whack and [clichéd] version of Alicia Key's "Songs in A Minor". Just [no] please. I want a one or two word title that speaks volumes without saying much, but reflective of where she is at currently in her life. She's got this love and glow that has been missing since the early 90's and I want the album title, its artwork and content to reflect this clearly. I trust and know she would come up with something excellent.

Honestly, I really don't care for her singing. She lacks precision, and everything is just merged/slurred and glides together all the time, and then there's that diction problem. Ariana has a pleasant tone but needs to know that in professional singing, intent and clarity is key. Staccato, crisp and intentional phrasing while singing with effort is what makes professional singing, not this karaoke slurred mess she always seems to conjure up. That's the difference between her and Mariah Carey, well one of the many differences.

Haha well the 2 I read didn't really have anything to do with the plot. One was the protagonist talking about AIW being played everywhere (it was set around holidays) and said something like "All I want for Christmas starts playing with Mariah singing about what she wants for Christmas". The other one had AIW start playing during a school holiday event and the protagonist and her friend gets excited and runs to the dance floor and later when the boyfriend talks about how happy she looked she's like "it's Mariah Carey ofcourse I was happy". Both books by different writers.

AIW in psychological thrillers (104,840)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|

I do recall reading an Armistead Maupin novel many, many, many, years ago, called "The Night Listener" wherein someone in a mental health institution believed himself to be Mariah Carey. It is the only literary reference to MC that I've ever come across.
There's a joke about Bobby-A here somewhere but I'll skip over it. Personal growth, and all that.
Also, please do not imagine I'm suggesting anybody read "The Night Listener". Like "Tales of the City" it was bloody awful.
Can you provide context for the Christmas song being featured in a psychological thriller? Or shall we, like my father's love, just skip over it and move on?

Okay, so that made me laugh but not more so than your reading psychological thrillers with All I Want For Christmas Is You featured therein.
My all-time favourite film is The Silence of the Lambs. I can't for the life of me imagine Clarice consulting with Hannibal Lecter in an effort to find a pseudo-transsexual serial killer then hopping into her car, popping on the radio, and head bobbing to the beat whilst singing "Santa won't you bring me the one I really need."

I actually enjoy ITC. Do I reach for it often? No, but I do like the song. I think it's a fun carefree song and whenever it comes on I usually don't skip. Infinity had some really clever lyrics but just something about the song didn't connect with me but I do enjoy the fun lyrics, I just hardly ever listen to it.

MC sung at the Saadiyat Festival in UAE yesterday. There are videos on X of her singing LTT and ITC. I have always thought ITC was the beginning of MC writing cheesy and silly lyrics. I love the beat and the MJ sample, but I think the lyrics are on list of some her worst lyrics. I don't think she will write those type lyrics ever again because of the lukewarm reception to "Corny like Fritos" from Infinity. Don't you agree, Bill? Lol. And thanks for commenting on my picture.

E=MC2 is one of my favorite album from MC and I'll be forever sad that it wasn't a bigger success which it definitely should have been and would have possibly gotten her 1-2 more #1s but I understand she was going through a personal low. Also I love "Love Story", "Thanks 4 Nothin'" and "For the record". I especially love the bridge in "For the record" where she mentions so many of her previous songs. That was super clever.

To portray this album as a failure is somewhat disingenuous. It debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200, it gave Mariah her highest first week sales of any album and also a No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Anyone who would not relish in this kind of success in 2024 is either not a fan or telling lies.
The problem with the album is that it contains too much filler (much the same as the problem with The Emancipation of MiMi), ie., Last Kiss, Love Story, Thanks for Nothing, For The Record. This woeful R&B dreariness doesn't stand the test of time and Mariah keeps recycling it.
This year's album should have no more than 11 tracks and be upbeat with hot material that is unique and accessible to all. And if "Songs in the Key of MC" isn't to be, then I must agree with Mimi L that the title should be concise - either one or two words - and not self-referential. What next? "My new secret name is Tinkerbell"? Give us a break.

To be honest a surprise album by Mariah would not have had as much traction as Beyoncé's and that's not because I think Beyoncé is better. Mariah is a better artist through and through but Beyoncé knows how to market herself. Her whole album was a visual album with all high quality aesthetic videos and that's something I don't think Mariah would have pulled off. How many videos did we even get from MIAM? The only time Mariah could have gotten traction from a surprise album drop was if she released it right after TEOM. Not only was MIAM poorly planned it had almost no publicity.

The rumor was that Mariah had planned to drop MIAM by surprise, but Beyoncé went ahead and did it first. To avoid situations like that, she doesn't reveal much about her projects anymore. IDJ has always been supportive of Mariah, but sadly she was too much in control and everything was messy.
