About Bill from the UK: I love Mariah more than you do.

London Daydream Tour Attendee.

Re: The Rarities liner notes (96,057) (96,060) by Bill from the UK
Incredibly frustrated. There's at least one error in every single Mariah lyric jacket, either lyrics misprinted or design inconsistency etc.

Re: Trash (96,048) (96,058) by Bill from the UK
Whilst I do agree that Celine's behaviour at the Divas concert can be interpreted as disrespectful towards Aretha, it had nothing to do with ethnicity, culture or race. Celine was caught up in the moment and went with it. She shouldn't have to apologise for being a good singer. Shania, Gloria, and Carole are relatively weak singers, and Mariah's voice was at the point of no return by 1998. Celine was the only one that could hold her own against Aretha.

Aretha invited the Divas to sing, and only Celine stepped up. Now, you can tell Aretha was getting pissed towards the end, as she's up in Celine's face proclaiming "Do you know the Lord?", indicating that Celine has no business singing a gospel song as she doesn't claim Christ (as far as I am aware). And then right at the end, Aretha even as libs "showing off now" to Celine, which was true. She was. Here's the clip.

She pulled Mariah from the background into the foreground to sing with her, Mariah sang a couple of riffs and then stepped back again leaving Aretha by herself at the front. She's asking the others to come forward, Celine is the only one that responds, goes a bit too far, and right at the end Aretha says "showing off now y'all" which was, by my perception, a dig at Celine.

Re: Swan song (96,026) (96,037) by Bill from the UK
This is heartbreaking, but it is understandable. I'm sure many of us here feel similar or can relate to some of your points.

Wishing you all the best in your journey. Keep dreaming Randy. That is your right.

Re: One Night (96,033) (96,036) by Bill from the UK
Yes, something about One Night doesn't quite gel. It's good, but it just seems a bit odd. The intro is amazing, up there with You Don't Know What To Do and You're So Cold etc. The intro would have worked as just an Interlude I think.

Clam linguine (95,982) by Bill from the UK
One thing I wish Mariah's memoir had contained is her father's clam sauce linguine recipe. The description her anticipation for the meal when she was a little girl (the cheese incident) was mouth watering. I would love to recreate it to his specifications.

Re: The Rarities vinyl version (95,976) (95,978) by Bill from the UK
Sorry Bobby-A, I was thinking four sides rather than 4 LPs. You're right, it should be able to include the concert then.

Re: The Rarities vinyl version (95,975) (95,976) by Bill from the UK
Yes but the 4 LPs could just be the 15 tracks divided up as per the #1 to Crapfinity vinyl and it not include the concert?

Re: The Rarities - track by track review (sorry) (95,956) (95,965) by Bill from the UK
Don't get me wrong little Andy, I love it but I can't see it gelling with the rest of the album. That said, it has been added to my Daydream playlist, as I too have been playing that "where would it have been sequenced had it originally been on the respective album" game. I've slotted it where you recommend (which was where I had it in my head as well). Daydream now runs thusly:

1. Fantasy
2. Underneath the Stars
3. One Sweet Day
4. Open Arms
5. Always Be My Baby
6. Slipping Away
7. I Am Free

1. One Night
2. When I Saw You
3. Long Ago
4. Melt Away
5. Forever
6. Daydream Interlude
7. Looking In

I also always divide my albums into "sides" lol.

Is the vinyl definitely including the concert? I would have thought it would have just been the first disc?

Re: Walter A (95,949) (95,951) by Bill from the UK
I was glad Mariah didn't bring up Walter, Eminem, Stella etc. and what went down with them. Throughout the memoir it became clear she, under advice from her therapist, is more about looking ahead and focussing on the future and making the best possible life for her family, and to cut out toxicity. I see the whole memoir as a cathartic piece giving the "wayward child" her voice, and closure, and acknowledging that where that little girl is now, is a good place, surrounded by unconditional love and stability. Something she never had until recently.

Haha, the thing is STD isn't that bad in isolation, but compared against the other tracks on the album, it's just nowhere near as good.

The Rarities - track by track review (sorry) (95,937) by Bill from the UK
The Rarities - track by track review

Read at your own peril.

First I wish to congratulate Mariah on this huge milestone in her career and thank her for all the gifts she has bestowed upon us. It is incredible how generous she has been for the MC30 celebrations, and we have truly been spoilt, and this album is no exception. Before I delve into it, the photographs used throughout are gorgeous (as all photos of Mariah are, but these are particularly striking, especially the Butterfly outtake photo with her hair billowing as she smiles), and I am over the moon Mariah included the lyrics and a paragraph about each track, as I was hoping for this to have happened.

Here We Go Around Again
Some background to this. This song had long been a mystery to me. I had Mariah's biography by Chris Nickson which came out in 1994, around the time of Merry Christmas' release. The book referred to this song, and described it wonderfully, and that the strength of the demo songs rested on this. I had always wondered in my head since I was about 10/11 years old what it would sound like. He wrote that it was Motown flavoured, but I didn't know if this was Jackson 5 funky Motown, or Gladys Knight ballad Motown etc. When Mariah started teasing with clips of this song, I went nuts. It was nothing like how I imagined it to be, and I was so looking forward to hearing the whole song, and it did not disappoint. I loved all the Carey/Margulies compositions from the debut album, there was a certain innocence about them I guess. I'd always longed to hear more of their work, and hoped they would reunite (but after reading about his appalling contract he made Mariah sign in the memoir, I get why she won't). The 1990 vocals are as lush and volumes and sublime as anything from the debut, and she sings with such conviction and exuberance. It was an immediate favourite. I understand the "sitcom" comments, but I think it sounds wonderful.

Can You Hear Me
Ah yes. The song I was super excited about and mentioned in every post on here since I heard about it. Interesting to see that it was written for Barbra Streisand. The Emotions vocals are as beautiful as anything on that album, and the simplistic approach and arrangement reminded me of Vanishing. And then I find that, like Vanishing, Mariah self produced this song. It really is sung wonderfully, in a style very in keeping with the other ballads on the Emotions album. It could have been a very strong closing number for the album, but I think The Wind was better ultimately.

Do You Think of Me
Always been one of my favourite songs, and glad to see it is included here. We all know this one so let's move on.

Everything Fades Away
Ditto above. Glad I can now make a Music Box playlist with the correct album closing track. UK fans get me.

All I Live For
I agree with Mariah's comment. This is 'soooo 90s'. It would have been a great addition to Music Box, as that album was extremely ballad heavy. I was surprised this was a Carey/Afanasieff composition, as he usually brought the ballads and the schmaltz, but this is like a lighter I've Been Thinking About You, and would have really given some balance to Music Box had it made the final cut. I love the mini high note, but the song's fade out seems to come out of nowhere which was quite jarring.

One Night
You know, the jury is still out on this one. The introduction is incredible, and could have been a pleasant interlude on Daydream, but, even know the song has all the hallmarks of a Daydream winner (layered vocals, great vibe, dreamy feel), I think lyrically it's not as mature as the rest of the album and would have stuck out like a sore thumb. It's great in many ways, but it doesn't belong on Daydream.

Slipping Away
We all love Slipping Away, great to see it finally find a home.

Out Here On My Own
As per everyone's thoughts when this was released prior to the album, an absolutely gorgeous song, delivered impeccably, which is now my closing track on my Glitter playlist. It is heartbreaking and one of Mariah's best vocal deliveries ever.

Loverboy (Firecracker Version)
Holy moly. Wow. I was absolutely floored. This has been on constant repeat, it is pure ear candy, and I am so frustrated that Mariah had to re-record the song and change the sample before of the sabotage and theft of her idea by Sony. This has now replaced the Candy and Remix versions on my Glitter playlist and opens the album. The a capella 'do do do dah' that bookends the song is genius, Mariah's vocals are amazing, and the sample gives the song such a great energy and bounce that is missing from the Candy version. Now I play the Candy version, her vocals seem listless and uninspired, which is completely understandable. The drive and energy of the Firecracker version's delivery is completely gone. And I agree, this was a natural sonic progression from Fantasy, Honey and Heartbreaker. No wonder the idea was stolen, it is the best thing on the album. Oh what sweet revenge it would be if the fans were to send this up the charts and be MC's 20th number one haha.

I Pray
Beautifully sung, sweet melody, lovely message. I think this would have been more appropriate to put out in today's climate over Save the Day.

Cool On You
The infamous Kick Rocks finally sees the light of day. Fun like most of E=MC2. In a previous life, I would have said this could have replaced I'm That Chick, but that song now has a whole other meaning following the Chick revelation the other week lol. It's much better than 4real4real, but the rest of the album is probably better than this track. Thank God JD didn't 'y'all know who this is' like he does over the rest of E=MC2.

Mesmerized
Second to Loverboy. How on God's green earth did this not find its way onto Me I Am Mariah? Yet the copy and pasted Bet'cha Gon' Know and It's a Wrap did? It makes no sense. This song is absolutely incredible. Someone mentioned it put them in mind of Stevie Wonder, I share the sentiments. It has a great retro summery 70s vibe and is glorious. I can't stop playing this.

Lullaby of Birdland
Please Mariah, make that jazz album. You are born to do it, your voice suits the genre perfectly. The scatting, the improvisation, the humour. It's got everything and I'm glad this was included.

Save the Day
Eek. Let's move on.

Close My Eyes (Acoustic)
Great to accompany the memoir as this song seems to be the running theme through many chapters. Nicely done. I'm sure this is the same version she performed on GMA not long ago.

Tokyo Dome Daydream Concert
Meh. Like many, I already had the "Out In Japan" bootleg, which was pretty good quality to begin with. Interesting that Always Be My Baby had the audience participation segment edited out (but then, the audience just sat there and didn't move a muscle so I get it). Nice to have Just Be Good to Me officially at last. But I don't like how half of each song is just the album version brought down a semitone.

I am so happy with this release. I haven't stopped playing it and, with the exception of STD, every track is a worthy inclusion and an absolute winner. I'm glad the B Sides have a home now (though I do feel bad for There For Me). Here's hoping The Rarities II You appears soon, as I'm sure MC will unearth more from that vault of hers over time.

Thank you Mariah for such a blessing and for all you have done for us. This album is amazing and I love you so much.

The Rarities (95,907) by Bill from the UK
Oh wow. What an album. I am floored, and to hear "new" songs from 90s Mariah was quite an emotional ride for me. I love all the songs, but Lord in heaven how on earth did Mesmerized not make it onto Me I Am Mariah? That song is probably the highlight for me. I will come back later with my track by track review. Apologies in advance lol.

What a week this has been. What a week. Thank you Mariah so much, for everything.

So this tweet has some pictures of the booklet for The Rarities. It looks like it will be containing the lyrics and an italicized paragraph about each song just as I had hoped. Mariah I love you so much.

TMOMC spoilers (95,884) by Bill from the UK
When is an acceptable time for us all to start talking about the content of the memoir? I'm so desperate to do so but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't got through it yet.

I can't believe The Rarities is out tomorrow. Here We Go Around Again, Can You Hear Me, Loverboy Firecracker Version, an unused 1993 Carey/Afanasieff composition (All I Live For). A Daydream outtake (One Night). Is this really happening?

This week has been too much. I need a cold compress.

I am stunned (95,869) by Bill from the UK
I binged the memoir in one day. Mariah in my ear narrating and singing, whilst I read the eBook. The hard copy is sitting on my bookshelf where it shall remain in pristine condition until the end of time.

I have no actual words for how much her story has moved me. I thought I knew her, I thought I knew her troubles and everything else. Thinking of her she has literally "smiled through a thousand years" as she gracefully did interviews and performances that I have both loved and critiqued, not knowing what was going on behind those closed doors all along.

I laughed, I cried, and I sobbed. I sobbed my heart out reading about her father, and her children, and the life she is trying to let them have.

Mariah has given us so much, and her life has been one of constant pain, yet all she has ever done for me, is bring constant happiness.

I just don't know what to do. I have never been so moved and felt so honoured to be one of her fans. I will never, ever turn away from her. She has my heart forever.

Re: Why is she still talking about JLo? (95,826) (95,831) by Bill from the UK
People in glass houses and all that. Mariah herself stole beats/sampled without permission (same thing) on many tracks and settled out of court. Emotions (Best of My Love), Can't Let Go (Right Before My Eyes), Make It Happen (I Want to Thank You) and plenty more. A quick breeze through whosampled.com and you can see the surprising amount of uncredited samples she has used across her album tracks and remixes. I mean we all know about the So So Def Remix of Say Somethin' by now don't we.
